A lot of new DVDs lately come with flimsy cardboard slipcovers that slide over the black plastic case (Duel, Sideways, Life Aquatic, Man on Fire SE, Rebel w/o/a Cause, etc.), and I'm getting really annoyed with them. They don't protect the case (cardboard shielding hard plastic?), the price sticker doesn't come all the way off, and they usually duplicate the content of the front and back cover of the DVD so there's no added visual interest either. I'm considering throwing mine out or at least putting them away somewhere, in case I sell any of the discs. Just curious, what do you all do with those useless covers?
Sometimes they look cool, but... meh.
they piss me off for a few reasons. by themselves, they're harmless, because who cares, BUT! the fact that somewhere some market research team had to survey all these people to come up with the info "people like outer cases! it makes them feel like they're getting something special", sucks. and mostly because its a cheap way to do that and it only simulates what cool packaging is. as in, the casablanca dvd is cool because it has a full-on case and a foldout. the bringing up baby dvd is not cool because it has a stupid slipcover to mask that its in an ugly regular case with no fucking insert. it is probably to help prevent theft, cause you cant pry it open as easily.
These things are so dumb. Once the covers became more prolific, rampant theft began to occur-- people would slip an Xbox game under the cover of say, Hero, and people would get a 50 dollar video game for 15 bucks. To prevent this stupidity, now companies (or distributors, not sure who exactly does it) are cutting out the UPC bar codes on the cover w/ a fucking razor blade, so whatever's underneath will be scanned (see Sideways for sure). Waste of paper. Waste of time. Waste of money.

They can prevent scratches on the plastic DVD case.

A hair dryer straight to the sticker will loosen the glue, making for a easier peel off.

I say, dump the cardboard cases and BRING BACK CHAPTER LISTING INSERTS!!!
They're pointless, but they're not as prone to reflection as a shrink-wrapped DVD, so they stand out more.
Sometimes you'll get a slipcover covered in fingerprints, which can be annoying.
I keep the slipcovers, since I can't bring myself to throw them out. And I haven't had trouble getting the price tags off. I don't care for slipcovers but I'm not irritated by them. If you don't like them you can just throw them away, no big deal.
