i guess the way to look at it would be thinking if any studio offered you a chance to see the (finished) film today which film would you want to see RIGHT NOW.... and why. heres mine
1. Batman Begins
because it looks soooo good. and because all the advance word is that THIS could be the movie batman fans have been waiting for. because my dad wants it to rule even more than i do. because i could recite the credits to the 1989 film from memory when i was 8 because i had seen it so many times. because i hope and pray its as good as it looks.
2. King Kong
as much as i hate the idea of remaking a classic, its just going to be too big to miss. even thought it cant be a classic like the original, i'm putting some faith in jackson to atleast make the greatest film he knows how to make. it could be very very good.... or it could be Godzilla.
3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
for all the reasons that Ghostboy can relate to (as discussed in the thread). because regardless of how the films have turned out, just the smallest bit of hope that somehow he could get it right again and make something to stand with the originals. hey, it could happen...
4. War of the Worlds
because barring the Terminal, spielberg has been on a roll lately and i've loved everything Private Ryan through Catch Me, especially AI and Minority Report. so a return to sci-fi, telling a story as classic as this one could rule. fingers crossed.
5. Elizabethtown
because i LOVE cameron crowe. for me, he's probably in the next rank of directors working today right under the andersons. i even loved Vanilla Sky (with flaws), so hopefully this will be more Jerry Maguire than Singles and a return to the perfect film like JM or AF.
6. A Scanner Darkly
how great are those pictures?!?! totally great. i loved the style of Waking Life but without ANY story to grab onto, it just wasnt something i could grab onto. but Phillip K. Dick adapted into this crazy style, WOW. plus, its got my favorite actress Winona back from the dead.
7. Domino
because i really like Tony Scott and he has gone especially over-the-edge recently without much regard to what anyone thinks. plus, its Richard Kellys second script to get developed and the AICN hype isnt helping things. hopefully this wont bear too much similarity to Confessions of a Dangerous Mind and will rule regardless.
8. Jarhead
because (for me) he is 2 for 2 and i LOVED road to perdition and american beauty, they both made my top 3 for their respective years. the cast seems cool, and he's yet to screw up so i'm excited for anything.
9. The Fountain
because i've been reading about it for too long, and maybe the goodwill of putting it on the list will help it actually come out. theres a still out there so that means its actually filming, but if there was a concrete date or a little more info it might be higher up! so, fingers crossed on this one too.
10. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire / Sin City / Charlie and the Chocolate Factory / Land of the Dead / The Brothers Grimm / The Island / The Corpse Bride / Kingdom of Heaven / Zathura
because the director makes me nervous / because the director makes me REALLY nervous / barring sleepy hollow, i havent loved one of his films in 10 years / whens the last time somebody let him make a movie? / advance word is not great and its been delayed a while / haha, love the Bay / no Henry Selick?!! / really like Ridley Scott but the trailer is a bit of a snooze and i'm wearing of the epics already / elf was a mess but Van Allsburgs book is really neatO.
No love for the New World?

WHAT!? Terrence Malick is an amazingly talented director.
Quotebarring sleepy hollow, i havent loved one of his films in 10 years
modage, you didn't love Big Fish??
Mine would be The New World, A Scanner Darkly, The Fountain (if it's released this year), The Corpse Bride, King Kong, 2046 (if a distributor doesn't pick it up soon, I'm watching it on DVD), the just-announced-yesterday V For Vendetta, the Strangers With Candy movie, the Wallace & Gromit movie and hopefully something new from Robert Altman (Praire Home Companion?). Oh yeah, and Star Wars.
The Wallace and Gromit Movie is, without a doubt, my most anticipated event of the year. I'm graduating from high school and moving to college this year, and Wallace and Gromit rank just above that.
A Scanner Darkly might be the second most anticipated, but it's not even close to Wallace and Gromit. I love Linklater and the look of the movie.
Kong. This isn't just any common remake of a movie--this is Peter Jackson's childhood dream movie. Just that fact alone--someone getting to make their childhood DREAM MOVIE!--is enough to get me psyched. Plus I dig The Lord of the Rings a ton.
The Fountain. It just sounds awesome.
Sin City. Depends on reviews but I'm very interested.
That's about it. I'm interested in other movies but not really psyched for them.
I forgot Sarabande, the final film from Ingmar Bergman. I believe it's opening this summer.
Must see movies for 2005..
Sin City
New World
Batman Begins
War of the Worlds
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Corpse Bride
Star Wars: Episode III
"Untitled" Mike Judge project
Looks interesting..
Land of the Dead
Alexander the Great
Millions
Be Cool
Melinda and Melinda
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Bewitched
Flops..
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
King Kong
I don't think "King Kong" will be a flop by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, it will probably compete with "War of the Worlds" for the title of most entertaining, well-made popcorn flick of the year. And that's high praise, considering that most of 2004's intended popcorn flicks were "true" flops.
That said, I'm no "King Kong" fanatic, so I can't put that on a list of my personal most anticipated films.
My list would pretty much be: Episode III (coming out two days before my wedding!!!), Elizabethtown and Land of the Dead. ... How's that for three films that couldn't be more different?
I wasn't even aware of Land of the Dead until this thread. And for whoever may also not be aware of it, it's a new "of the Dead" zombie movie from George Romero. Yeah it could be interesting. Is there any footage from it available? Stills? Anything?
I've been waiting for Romero to teach these kids how it's done again.
congratulations about your wedding , FYM.
KUNG FU HUSTLE. It'll be the funniest movie of the year.
steamboy

Malick is three for three, and I expect New World to continue the winning streak.
John Boorman has a new film, I think it's called In My Country.
If Robert Altman makes a long-planned film called Paint, count me in. Prairie Home Companion is skedded for 06.
There's also 2 remakes of 70's guilty-pleasure sports comedies, Bad News Bears and Longest Yard.
Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda makes the cut.
Then, there's always the surprise films, the ones that come out of nowhere to land on the top 10.
Quote from: GhostboyI forgot Sarabande, the final film from Ingmar Bergman. I believe it's opening this summer.
It's opening next week in Lisbon in a theatre near where I live, one of the few theatres approved by bergman himself. he didn't like the transfer to film so he's going with an all-digital projection on this one. I'll post a coment on how it was next week.
what about megaopolis or whatever it's called.

and will 2005 see the release of a new PTA film?
hopefully some info will surface.
surely he will at least start filming something this year.

Look for some news around the end of March.
...
Seriously, fat chance, but what rumor was that you read?
For me this year is way too new to call, or to be excited about anything. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe could be great. LotR/Harry Potter potential, if they really get it right. But on a smaller scale, because the books aren't nearly as popular these days, as far as I know. Others: Palindromes, Goblet of Fire, Sin City, 2046, Melinda and Melinda, Land of Plenty, The Fountain, Paint, Eros, A Scanner Darkly, The New World, and The Tulse Luper Suitcases: The Moab Story (though it's been out since 2003, really, it's yet to see the light of day in the US).

after reading this thread i went to imdb and was just doing searches on all the directors i could think of. it listed an "untitled Quentin Tarantino project." i guess this is referring to the film he wanted to do quick after shooting so long for Kill Bill. when i looked up PTA there was a thread that just said the script was finished but was top secret.
yeah we can cross our fingers, but i think its very unlikely that QT or PTA will be releasing a film this year. or FFC for that matter.

MUST SEES
Spike Jonze/Charlie Kaufman horror film
will probably be the best film of the year, unless PTA's new film happens to come out this year - the same prick who kept BJM and Adaptation from being the best films of their year
Batman Begins
been waiting for another dark batman movie for a LONG time. Nolan seems fit for the job... motherfucker better be
Glamorama
Its only a matter of time before Avary makes a great film. This could be it.
The Science of Sleep
was quite dissapointed with how he handled Kaufman's script, but im interested to see how he'll do with his own writing.
Kung Fu Hustle

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

OTHERS
A Scanner Darkly
The Corpse Bride
King Kong
War of the Worlds
New World
thats about it, i think, without mentioning the ones that will most likely suck (eg. star wars, sin city etc).
Kong: Cause come Christmas this year, Jackson will release something phenomenal. And the cast rocks.
Sin City: cause it looks like a fucked up fantasy comic book Pulp Fiction. Or maybe just cause I'm wanting another Pulp....
WOTW: Spielberg, Cruise, aliens and a shitload of big effects. Just inject it to my veins.
Episode III: Yea we all want it to be a good film but who's really counting on it? Instead I'll just look forward to those 'whoaaaaa' visuals we're gonna get in boatloads from this flick...
Daltry Calhoun: Quentin Tarantino-produced dramedy starring Johnny Knoxville & Juliette Lewis. Could be one of those great highlights of the year that comes out of nowhere.
Palindromes: Cause its been a frigging long time since Storytelling and I need a fix of Solondz.
Melinda & Melinda: Simply because its Will Ferrell in a Woody Allen flick.
Call me pessimistic but I cant see a newie from PTA or Gondrey or Jonze coming out this year cause they tend to, um, take AGES to actually reach screens let alone make (waiting for PDL seemed like a fuckin lifetime).

Handicapping the 2006 Oscars[/b]
Thursday, March 3, 2005 Posted: 1:17 PM EST (1817 GMT)
LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- "Million Dollar Baby?" Old news. Jamie Foxx? Ancient history.
It's time to set odds on which films will dominate next year's Academy Awards, based on what's visible in Hollywood's ever-changeable lineup for 2005.
Granted, no one's seen these movies, and some haven't even started shooting, so who knows which might have that touch of Oscar gold, or which won't manage to be ready in time to qualify?
But there are keys to early Oscar handicapping. Does it have Gwyneth Paltrow in it? Does it feature a woman pretending to be a man? Does it have Gwyneth Paltrow pretending to be a man?
Beyond that, the best signposts are a film's heavyweight-drama quotient and pedigree of talent. How many past Oscar winners are involved? Does a cover-girl performer efface her looks for a stark and sober story? Is it a "master" filmmaker tackling a "momentous" subject?
These are subjective criteria, but as a studio mogul noted in "Barton Fink": "I guess we all have that Barton Fink feeling. But since you're Barton Fink, I'm assuming you have it in spades."
For this crystal-ball exercise, we're looking for that Oscar feeling, and we figure people such as these -- Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Ron Howard, Roman Polanski -- must have it in spades.
And the Oscar could go to:
"Cinderella Man" -- Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Renee Zellweger star in the story of Depression-era boxer Jim Braddock, who gets a second chance in the ring. The academy loves underdog stories, Ron Howard ("A Beautiful Mind") directs and Crowe punches people out.
"Memoirs of a Geisha" -- Rob Marshall ("Chicago") directs this adaptation of the novel about an orphan girl (Zhang Ziyi) who becomes a queen-bee madame kept in style by powerful men. Sex, sumptuous sets, exotic locales, a beautiful leading lady poised for a breakout role. Sex.
"Kingdom of Heaven" -- Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") directs the saga of a battling knight (Orlando Bloom) in Jerusalem during the Crusades. Scott revived the moribund Roman epic. If anyone can make a Crusades story palatable in this politically correct age, he's the man.
"War of the Worlds" -- Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise spin the spectacle of sci-fi spectacles, a new take on H.G. Wells' invaders-from-Mars classic. Everyone secretly loves to see the world toasted, and it co-stars that adorable Dakota Fanning.
"All the King's Men" -- Sean Penn stars in this update of Robert Penn Warren's novel loosely based on political kingfish Huey Long. Penn in the meatiest role since his Oscar win for "Mystic River," backed by Anthony Hopkins, Kate Winslet, Patricia Clarkson, Jude Law and James Gandolfini. Can you say dream cast?
"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" -- Johnny Depp has scored Oscar nominations as a sashaying pirate and a repressed Edwardian playwright. Can he earn another as Willy Wonka? Tim Burton's remake offers endless visual possibilities, and the story of candyman Willy playing tour guide to children is a beloved one for academy boomers.
"Jarhead" -- Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") aims for another mix of drama and macabre humor with this tale of an elite sniper unit in the Gulf War. British theater vet Mendes has a keen outsider's eye for stories about Americans. And enlisting Jamie Foxx to co-star doesn't hurt.
"King Kong" -- "Lord of the Rings" maestro Peter Jackson directs a remake of the great ape biopic, with Naomi Watts as the new Fay Wray. After elevating the fantasy genre to Oscar glory by treating hobbits with dead earnestness, Jackson's madman enough to do the same for a giant gorilla.
"The New World" -- Colin Farrell tries to put "Alexander" behind him in this colonial tale of John Smith and Pocahontas, from director Terrence Malick ("The Thin Red Line"). Malick hardly ever makes movies, but when he does, they're awesome.
"Oliver Twist" -- For his first film since winning the best-director Oscar for "The Pianist," Roman Polanski has a go at Charles Dickens' classic of an orphan among pickpockets. Oscar winner Ben Kingsley as the nefarious Fagin. Doesn't everyone prefer Sir Ben in "Sexy Beast" demeanor rather than "Gandhi" mode?
"The Producers" -- Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick reunite for a movie based on a stage hit based on a movie, about con men bilking investors on a Nazi musical. A best-picture trophy for producer Mel Brooks would make a nice companion bookend for his screenplay Oscar on the 1968 original.
"Walk the Line" -- Joaquin Phoenix is the man in black, Johnny Cash, with Reese Witherspoon as wife June Carter. In the same way people went, "Huh? Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles? ... Oh, yeah. I see it," Phoenix bears a curious resemblance to Cash. But can he lip-synch?
"Untitled Steven Spielberg Project" -- The director goes for another twofer in one year, this one featuring Eric Bana in a drama chronicling events at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, when 11 Israeli athletes and coaches were killed by Palestinian militants. It's his most "important" film since "Saving Private Ryan."

Oh.
Fuck IMDB Plot Summery/Genre Classification.
I'd keep it on the list though!
I was just talking with Cron and suddenly the end of the year looks pretty good, so here's a list of films that will be released sooner or later.
Not all films listed means I'm looking forward to them, but I put them anyway as someone else might do, not all dates of release are wide, some are limited.
August
The 5th.
2046 - Wong Kar Wai
Broken Flowers - Jarmusch - Starring B. Murray
The 12th.
The Grizzle Man - Herzog
The 26th.
The Brothers Grimm - Gilliam
September
The 16th.
Thumbsucker - Mike Mills
Everything Is Illuminated - Liev Schreiber - Starring Elijah Wood, Eugene Hutz. I don't know much about it but the premise sounds good.
The Lord of War - Andrew Niccol - Nic Cage, Ethan Hawk, Jared Leto. This one could be fun, and also love the Cage.
The 23th.
The Corpse Bride. Enough said.
The 30th.
Oliver Twist - Polansky. This one could be great.
A History of Violence - Cronenberg
Art School Confidential - Terry Zwigoff. Haven't seen his first two flims, but GW and Bad Santa were great so...exactly.
Capote - Bennet Miller - Phil Parma, you all know why you'll watch this one.
October
The 7th.
North Country - Niki Caro - Charlize Theron
The Curse of the Were-Rabbit starring Wallace & Gromit - Box & Park
The 14th.

Good Night, and Good Luck - Clooney. I'm not sure about this one but who knows.
The 21th.

The 28th.

Harry Potter - Mike Newell
Walk the Line - Mangold. As some have already said, this year's Ray.
The 25th.
Ice Harvest - Harold Ramis - John Cusack, Billy Bob.
December
The 2nd.
Aeon Flux. If it's half as good as the animated series this will be great, althoug I don't have much hope.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - Andrew Adamson.
Syriana - Steven Ghagan - Clooney, Dmon, Amanda Peet.

Memoirs of a Geisha - Rob Marshall
The 16th.
King Kong - Peter Jackson. I'm really looking forward to this one.
All the King's Men - Steve Zaillian - Sean Penn, Jude Law and the wonderful Patricia Clarkson. This one could be really good, though it could easily suck big time.
Lucky You - Curtis Hanson - Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore.
The 23th.
Munich - Spielberg. I'm sure he'll be 2 of 2 this year. :yabbse-thumbup:
Match Point - Woody Allen
The other flim that isn't listed is The Fountain, apparently it will have a fall release but who knows, let's just hope they don't move it to next year.
What a shitty year for movies.
Honestly, 2005 was by far the worst year for movies.
They should just combine the Oscars and the Razzies into one event this year.

i can't think of one amazing movie that I've seen this year. There aren't any movies that have even tempted me to go to the cinemas, except Sin City (so far my best movie of the year). I will be seeing Broken Flowers though.
you guys are craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy... :elitist:
this year: star wars/the fountain/the new world
be lucky to be alive..that alone makes up for the past couple of years...

i hear thats good. :yabbse-thumbup:

so u only see movies u think will be good (based on hype apparently and the marketing department's ability to tempt u), and even then u choose movies that aren't that good. and then u blame the year?

in the new EW, the (ever-shifting) release date is now NOV 23rd.
It doesn't matter what I anticipate because I either have to drive about 2 hours to get to the nearest decent theater. (Which I did to see 2001 being screened about a week ago, but that was toooootally worth it)
The theaters around here are overpriced, run the shittiest movies and are very uncomfortable (especially for the 10 bucks I'm dishing out).
I could either take a girl out on a date to the movies and pay for everything, or buy a Criterion and have her over to watch it at my house. I usually go with the latter.
