Title: last life in the universe
Post by: pete on August 26, 2004, 11:35:16 PM
just saw this movie, AMAZING.  Christopher Doyle's outdone himself again, he's like the most versatile DP in the world today or something.  I really can't find a better quirky romance about two beautiful lonely people with weird quirks and profound melancholy than this one, at least not in recent years.  this movie was the shit.  it was also the best filmmed movie this year, even better than Doyle's previous Hero.  it's making its rounds at the arthouse theaters I think, you suburban bitches just have to weep and watch Garden State really really hard for a few more times I guess.

After reading about this, I really want to see it.  Any chance of it seeing some sort of release outside of New York (that's what IMDb said anyway)?  If so, any idea when?

Yeah, I got that much.  Is it ever going anywhere else, though, is my question.

i just saw this.  pete, write an essay on it for the green screen. http://www.xixax.com/viewtopic.php?t=7256&start=15  i'd like to know more about why you loved it.  also, it looked like it was shot on dv.

i had the same problem playing on this girl's TV--how the colors were very cold (video cold) and parts of the screen was cropped (still wide but not wide enough).  I played it on my computer and it was fine.  I hope you can find a better DVD player soon before you return it.

I don't have that much to write about, it's easy to go on and on about a movie you hate, but a movie you love there really isn't that much to say.  I laughed at the black comedy and squirmed at the shots and fell in love with the guy and the girl as they fell in love with each other.  then in the end I felt a bit loss.  I was quite aware that I was watching something great as it unfolded (this doesn't happen often, for example, I didn't think Bad Education was good until I thought about it as the credits scrolled).  So I dunno, I'd like to know what you didn't like about it.

I finally watched this. I liked it a lot, but it didn't quite hit me the way it has many other people. I didn't feel that Kenji's character, so well established initially, was developed too well. And I could have done without the mobsters ever showing up again (although I did like seeing Miike there) - actually, I could have done without that subplot altogether. I loved the central relationship, and I didn't actually dislike anything in the film overall, but I wasn't ecstatic about any of it. It didn't hit enough extremes for me, emotionally.

i had this sitting in my room for about two weeks and i finally got around to it. i have to agree with ghostboy. that whole gangster subplot didn't really work for me at all.  it would have been a much simpler, much better film without it. but i still enjoyed it and why won't chris doyle shoot my movies damnit?

Do I need to blind buy this, or should I Netflix it first?

It wasn't as profound as I expected, but I liked it.

I loved the delayed title card. I also loved the ending. Especially the cut to credits... that was beautiful.

Saw this.  Was detached for most of the time and still don't know what to make of it.  Detached appreciation is all I can really muster, though I did admire it in the end and really don't know why.  It had a hard time holding my attention, although I know it was worth more than that.  It's worth a second viewing, for sure.

Years later.  I still love this film so much.  Has it picked up any new friends since the last slew of negative (or lukewarm) responses?

I've seen this movie twice. The first time, I was so in love and the gangster subplot didn't bother me at all, in fact it provided an interesting aspect of the main character's personality that seemed like an entire world that wasn't at all addressed and made him all the more mysterious. The second time I saw it, I was able to look at more details, and I still loved it.

spoilers

the cover art for this caught my eye at my local video store. i recognised the title and remembered pete raving about it when it was released so i decided to rent it..

while i enjoyed the film immensely, watching it i didn't think it would induce any extensive post-viewing deliberation. two days later, i can't shake it. there are moments in this that are so eerily enthralling: the ethereal cleansing of noi's home (holy shit!); noi taking the form of her dead sister for a portion of the film after falling in love; the ending. the more i think about these moments, the more i feel the need to watch this again.

i loved the space the director had given himself by allowing kenji and noi to exist as, for the most part, unexciting characters. we're not hanging on their every word but rather observing the director's choice of exposition. its always great to see a film that proficiently commits to alternative methods of sustaining an audience other than relying on the whim of its central characters, though kenji's suicide attempts were always assiduous. and it's not a result of poor writing, i did fall in love with both these characters.

the more i think about it, the more i love this film but i can't fully justify its impact on me. ive always been a sucker for subtly accomplished surrealism so that would have something to do with it. perhaps a second viewing will reveal more. nevertheless right now this stands as one of my favourite films of the decade so far.

also ive been listening to the soundtrack all day. amazing!
