Title: Showgirls Drinking Game
Post by: Ghostboy on August 08, 2004, 08:51:03 PM
I gave this a try last night -- I'd never seen the movie before. There's no way you could make it all the way to the end of the movie without getting alcohol poisoning, so me and my buddy just gave up at a certain, highly inebriated point and enjoyed the film for what it was -- a glorious piece of entertainment, unrivaled in the history of cinema.

For the record, I didn't buy the DVD set -- I just found the rules online and my friend found a copy of the film on VHS in his parents' bedroom. Which brings up a whole slew of questions -- or just one question actually -- that I'd rather not know the answer to.

Woo hoo, this should be the official drinking game thread. Anytime you watch a movie and drink to it. Tell us about it. If im watching a british film I will drink anytime they use a word i would never use.

Someone please explain "Showgirls" to me before I Netflix it.

Is it bad enough to be good? Or is it just bad? (Or is it just...good?)

Is it a waste of 2 hours or is it worth it, for The You Know What if not for anything else?

PS - I saw "Sly Fox" on Broadway, starring Eric Stoltz, Richard Dreyfuss, and Liz Berkley.

Stoltz and Dreyfuss were outsanding and hilarious but -- Hey, Berkley's acting SUCKED.

It's a bad film that works sometimes as camp.  It was trying to be serious, trying to be a good film, and the people that made it, as I understand it, think they made something great.  Now these same people, or at least the studio behind it, is/are making this out to be some sort of camp classic (by releasing that new collectors set) when it was never intended to be that way.  What I've seen was pretty bad -- don't remember much, it was so long ago I think I blocked most of it out.  But you may find some entertainment value in it.

I used to hang out at this hip video store in Boston called "City Videos", and once this hip gay dude who only rented gay porn came in, while all of the rest of us were just chatting up about movies, and to show off how hip he was, he barged in and told us how great he thought Show Girls was.  At one point, he even said that Show Girls was the most underrated film of all time.  We were all just like, whatever dude.  And then he asked me what I thought was the most underrated film of all time was, so I said "Rushmore."  Then he flipped out, he was like "just because a film is about you, made by people like you, for people like you doesn't mean it's good" and then took his gay porn and left.  I didn't know what to say.  I couldn't make fun of his gay porn, 'cause that'd be too obvious, and couldn't make fun of show girls, 'cause that was even more lame, so we all just stood there and watched him walk away.

I thought it was hilarious. Granted, I was getting progressively more inebriated as I watched it, but I'm pretty sure I would enjoy it sober, especially if other people are present.

There's endless amounts of T/A, so much that it ceases to become sexy very quickly. So don't rent it for the erotic quotient, because it doesn't deliver.

I thought it was pretty hot, but I've only seen part of the rated R version when it was on the bravo channel.  the scenes drew a lot of attention to the nudity--for example, when a chick is topless, all the characters in the movie would remark on her breasts and sometimes even tell her to do things to her own breasts, as opposed to most of the T&A movies (like Russ Meyer's) where a chick would just hang out topless and everyone would just ignore her boobs.
I think Paul Verhoeven remains the tackiest big-budget "A-movie" director the world has ever seen.  there have been tackier movies, and there have been bigger-budget movies, but Paul Verhoeven maintains such a good yin yang over the two.

........basically is so phucking bad its good...its so over the top and ridiculous..and [i agree w/ jack], it has one of the best lines ever in a film...."it must feel weird to not have anybody cum on you".....

I would agree with this most of the time, but I have to say: I think RoboCop is just awesome.  I love that movie.  Paul did good by that one.

Basically, yeah. Also, shots for vaginas, doubles if they're shaved. Stuff like that.

"Pin the pasties on the showgirl". It's why the set includes a blindfold.
