I can't believe that there isn't a Jaws thread, so I hope that there is and this gets locked and redirected.
I have to admit I saw Jaws for the first time about 5 years ago. I bought the DTS dvd a few days ago and watched it for only my 2nd time. This is just a really well made movie. The composition is great. It reminded me of a Leone film on the ocean. Also, the building of the suspense is top notch. I mean, we all understand the effect of Jaws & Star Wars had on the film industry, and I don't think anyone is a fan of what happened, but I still can't fault those 2 movies. Jaws is just a really great film.
this is a movie with some extreme repeat value. it's so good.
can't beat this zoom in... oops... dolly in.. or is both?? who gives a shit?

The shot of the yellow barrels passing through the reflection on Brody's glasses will always rock.

Yeah thats the one. Thanks. Weird, I remembered it that way.

you're were probably thinking of the scene where brody is reading the shark books.
I saw this movie when I was a kid, before I was into films. So, recently I watched it again as people told me it was really good as a film. I had assumed since then that it was just a shark attack movie.
I was wrong.
It's so much more.
Tragically, I got caught up in watching a couple of the sequels over Thanksgiving, and they just go to prove the point of how great the first film is.
Jaws 2 is essentially a remake of the first movie. And it is only watchable when it directly copies -- note for note -- scenes from the first film. So the scenes are good, in that respect, but they still feel slightly tired. And the ending is just hilariously bad. And those teenage fashions! Oy!
And Jaws 4, meanwhile, just makes one wonder how ANYONE could ever making an exciting film about a big toothy fish. I mean, it just made me want to gouge my eyes out. And thus, in the process, solidified my respect for the brilliance that is the original Jaws.
great movie. I enjoyed watching the behind the scenes on the dvd. Spielberg talks about how the shark didn't work. I thought that was pretty funny.
Universal has officially announced the DVD release of a Jaws: 30th Anniversary Edition for 6/14 (SRP $22.98 ). This will be a 2-disc set containing the film in anamorphic widescreen video, with both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio. The second disc will be all extras (no word yet on what they are). Word is you'll also get something called Jaws: The Commemorative Photo Journal - probably a commemorative book. This 2-disc set will also be available in a full frame version, and it looks as though a single-disc Jaws: Anniversary Collector's Edition version will also be available in full frame and anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 and anamorphic widescreen with DTS 5.1 (SRP $14.98 ). So let's get this straight... there are 5 DVD versions in all. 2-disc Wide (DD/DTS), 2-disc Full (DD/DTS), 1-disc Full (DD), 1-disc Wide (DD) and 1-disc Wide (DTS).

'Jaws' film restoration zaps scratches, adds color
By Bryan Alexander, USA TODAY
Film, like ocean water, can get pretty murky over time.
So 1975's Academy Award-winning Jaws was due for a full restoration, part of Universal Studio's 100th anniversary celebration. Other classic films selected for restoration include 1973's The Sting, 1962's To Kill a Mockingbird and 1930's All Quiet on the Western Front.
"It really gave us a chance to restore the film to its pristine state," says Mike Daruty, Universal's senior vice president of technical operations. He worked with director Steven Spielberg on the five-month Jaws restoration, and "it looks fantastic."
Spielberg himself admits in a short film about the restoration that the original negative for the film was "pretty crummy" because of age and use. The restoration team went through the negative frame-by-frame to remove significant scratches and fix color problems. They would spend as long as four hours on problematic frames.
The director was "extremely pleased," says Daruty. "His comment was that it looked even better than it did during its release."
The restored film was first played before an outdoor audience at the Tribeca Film Festival in April and will be officially unveiled at an outdoor screening for JawsFest 2012 on Saturday on Martha's Vineyard. (It will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 14.)
Seeing a killer shark restored on-screen might be a daunting task even for the movie's most supreme fans.
"I hope people have their hands over their eyes for only a portion of the film," says JawsFest organizer Susan Sigel Goldsmith. "It looks to be even scarier now. We can't wait."
