Javier Bardem and Robin Wright Penn are set to star in "The Last Face," a drama about two relief workers in western Africa who have an unrequited love affair. Sean Penn will play a supporting role as a journalist.

The indie film will begin production in July in Cape Town, with Erin Dignam directing from her own script.

"I think it's the best writing and a subject that has never been done before," Wright Penn told the Hollywood Reporter.

She added that the story is more than a romantic drama, it delves into two philosophical perspectives about human aid and relief work.

"How do you save a human life?" posed Wright Penn. "It's an intricate and emotional answer and I hope this film helps open the mind to other possibilities on how to answer that question."
