Title: 99 Most Influential Music Videos.
Post by: cron on January 24, 2004, 08:07:48 AM
Described by some as marketing tools for over-hyped stars and lauded by others as the inspired, inimitable fusion of musicians and directors, music videos over the last 20 years have come to lead film, fashion and special effects forward, and represent the most artistically inspired cross-pollinations of uniquely collaborative modern art forms, namely pop music and film. Listed here are the 99 most influential, popular rand memorable videos of our blink-and-forget-it era, selected by industry movers and shakers in an informal , highly unscientific poll. Prodigy should be within the top three. 'Weapon of Choice' within the top twenty.

And where's Rammstein's 'Sonne'? Where's VAST's 'Pretty When You Cry'?

All in all, it's a pretty good list. At least it didn't have "Hey Ya" in the top five.

Without a doubt, Beat It and Billie Jean by Michael Jackson ushered in the MTV age.  The art form of music videos has progressed and morphed since then, but the world was a different place after those two videos came out in early 1983.

For once I can say, GOOD LIST ! The really good videos are there and the order seem quite alright.

I think it's the first list I like ever.

the 3 Radiohead videos confuse me...I'd have Street Spirit of theirs ahead of any of the other ones.  I understand Karma Police, Just is good but not top 10 and I do not understand Fake Plastic Trees on the list at all.

I like how Johnathan Glazer didn't list Street Spirit or Karma Police. He directed both of those.

Rabbit in Your Headlights is a Thom Yorke collaberation with DJ Shadow by the way. Most people probably knew that. It's a great video.

Wow, lots of Spike Jonze (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000AZT2X/104-3761006-1402335?v=glance), Michael Gondry (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DBJ9J/ref=pd_bxgy_text_1/104-3761006-1402335?v=glance&s=dvd&st=*), and Chris Cunningham (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000DBJ9I/ref=pd_sim_dv_1/104-3761006-1402335?v=glance&s=dvd).

Just is classic. Street Spirit is interesting, but doesn't belong on that list. No Surprises should be there.

it's there.

this list is tainted, as JB pointed out, by the recent label releases. and a lot of these videos haven't been influential at all. they must've misspelt best. how can Windowlicker be the third most influential video of all time when it's an obvious parody of average rap videos??

technically u are correct. even tho it preceded the booty boom of the late 90s. i think influential means "name dopped the most when ppl talk about videos"? even so, COME TO DADDY should hav been number 3 at least.. and need i point out that my boy cunningham has 2 in the top 10? that alone gives the list credibility, whatever it's sposed to be..

meh. well their definition is messed. Cunningham's geniosity is well proven. i just think that going by the actual definition of "influential" (meaning that it gives inspiration to and spawns countless other things that incorporate elements of it), maybe 1/4 of these videos qualify to be on a list of top things ever, because really. how often do you see a "Let Forever Be" video? maybe once and a half.
