phone sex
A recurrent theme in Anderson's work, is what you're saying? I agree, of course. Definitely an ambivalence there towards sex as commodity... but a realization that at its core, that's what sex has to be in a culture as hypocritical about it as ours. I think PTA plays down his intellect and tries to come off down-to-earth- which I think is right, I mean his films are a mixture of raw juice and headiness- but he's also awfully sharp in these kinds of sociocultural observations. He doesn't make them loud- he blends them into the story. Which makes them seem all the more astute and indelible.
his movies are all dirty.
Pretty interesting observation.
how's about pedophiles suffering the worst fates

That's just in two out of four. My two favorites of his, but still... not as recurrent a subplot/theme. You could just as easily say (of the same two films), "How's about lonely gay guys in unrequited love?" I think JB hit on the true PTA constant, here...
Sex is mentioned in almost every movie (particularly from an aclaimed director). Think about Solondz, Scorsese, Wes Anderson and every one else.
but in all those flicks, sex spun off in a bad way.
sydney - they knocked a man out so he'd pay her and things got out of hand
boogie nights - the downward spiral of the porn industry
magnolia - father raped his daughter = she hates him
punch drunk love - he owes too much money
"pussy" is mentioned in all four films too

And we're all filthy, dirty men (and women) for watching them.
Ain't it great? :-D

i noticed that and thought a lot about it wondering what might've happened to our poor paul for him to be hammering that message to us.
Anderson likes P words.
And his name just happens to be Paul.
Coincidence? I think not.
