Now c'mon. I know Bad Boys 2 is at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to redeeming film value. But you gotta give it credit for taking the concept of ridiculous action movie and just running with it to almost stratospheric heights of silliness. I mean,
****SPOILERS******
at the end not only is the guy shot but then he falls on a land mine, which seems to be on a 3 second delay for some reason, and blows into pieces!!! that is an amazing end to a bloated and silly action movie!
and we mustn't forget the corpses falling out of the van in traffic, freakin' classic.
I'll tell ya honestly: i enjoyed Bad Boys 2 soooo much more than Whale Rider!!!
i HATED bad boys 2. i LOVED the original. the second one had the will and martin fighting while the first they were buddies. i hated that. it was way too violent, but not in a fun way, like kill bill. they wanted it to be fun, but it was just too awful. i really wanted to walk out, but the person i was with wanted to see how it ended. we both ended up hating it, but my friend was glad he stayed to witness how awful it was. that having been said, i don't know any of the bad movies. usually, i won't see a movie if i know i'm going to hate it. the only movies i really didn't like that i did see were
bad boys 2
terminator 3
hulk
freddy vs. jason was bad, but in a good way.
I found something redeemable, no matter how minor, in just about every movie I saw this year, except for The Cat In The Hat. Beyond that, I don't really care to dwell on the negative.
1. Kill Bill
2. T3
3. Freddy v Jason (taz, usually i like movies that are bad in a good way, but this was NOT one of them)
4. Matchstick Men (way too predictable even by Hollywood's standards)

too perfect if you ask me...

Not to quibble, and since I haven't seen the movie I'm not sure, but if he
landed on a land mine, why would it explode? If he became a zombie and got up off it, then it would explode, right?
i just rented charlie's angels 2 the other day, hoping it would be atleast half as fun as the first one, but man- mac, u're absolutely right. diaz was hotter than before, as was lucy, but besides that, it was sooooo stupid. exhausting even. blah.
See, Charlies Angels 2 was all about Crispen Glover so I'm not gonna put it on my list (though it was pretty bad).
In no particular order:
-Matrix sequels ( just because of the disapointment)
-Shanghai Knights
-Anger Management
-Terminator 3
-Irreversable (I thought it was 02, but it was another list)
I tend to forget the bad and remember the good, so I'm sure I'm leaving some off.

Almost perfect. I still think The Hunted is good, and I don't think you can really pass judgement on Charlies Angels 2 because it defies it. I liked it a whole lot (but didn't like the first one, so go figure).
Oh, and I think I enjoyed Shanghai Knights. But I don't really remember anything about it, so I won't contest that one.

good point, but hey it's Jerry Bruckheimer & Michael Bay. and that little point makes the ending all the beter to me. Even more illogical than it was before!
And to me the absolute worst films of 2003 were.... (drum roll)....
MATRIX Reloaded & MATRIX Revolutions in a tie for most dissapointing, biggest waste of money, largest blown opportunity, and just plain more filthily disgustingly bad movies of the year!
Anger Management did suck. I forgot that one. The ending was WAY out of left field. It pains me too, being such a huge Nicholson fan.
And no, I was NOT kidding about Kill Bill, that movie sucked f*cking ass, and I wanted to like it so bad, but man, I hate that movie.
fie on you, satan!
yes, i agree that anger management could've been a LOT better. but, in terms of making me laugh and me getting enjoyment out of it, it was an A- or B+. and it's on my 10 best because i can watch it over and over again and still laugh. so there.
I'm in no way disregarding your opinion, merely stating my own.

Ouch. I felt that half of those were good. :|
I havent' seen enough in '03 to make a top 10 (I try to steer clear of crap). From what i have seen I though Anger Management sucked a big one compared to the potential. National Security was a horrible movie I was actually pissed off at it because of all the racial jokes in it against whites. Another one I personally thought was really bad was Phone Booth. It was good for a movie that was basically just in a Phone Booth but the premise itself is just stupid. A funny top 10 worst list I've read was here http://worldfilm.about.com/cs/toppicks/tp/worstof2003.htm
That is a legitimate website and their worst picks are a complete joke. Most of the films are top 10 best everywhere else.
Well I think they passed the "How To Be Hated By Xixax Members" test with flying colours.
1) Dreamcatcher
Thats it. I dont like complaining about films cause I'm pretty much down with everything but this one was just....peeew. How come something as notorious as 'Battlefield Earth' can get hammered to the ground (when I didnt even think it was that bad) yet this one is left alone. This one deserves all the abuse it gets. A fuck-up on every level. Freeman's speech before the attack on the alien-things is one of my highlights for the 'What the fuck was anyone thinking while making this sheat' award of the year.
And I'm with Taz on 'Anger Management'. I really, really liked it. People go on like it was this MAJOR dissapointment but what did ya expect? It was funny and a much more quality Sandler comedy (compare it to 'Mr. Deeds' and you get my point). I only get dissapointed when thinking of other ways it coulda turned out but the end result is ace. 'Bruce Almighty' takes the title of dissapointing comedy for me
I don't like Sandler films, but I will admit that Anger Management was better than most of his stuff.
This is why I was turned off by it though: One of the best Sandler films BUT one of the worst Nicholson films.
The cast was good though.
My Boss's Daughter, The Life of David Gale and Anger Management would be my bottom 3
Party Monster was easily the worst movie I saw this year. Secondhand Lions and In the Cut were up there, too.
I tend to just forget movies that are bad but not outrageously bad, though.
this is a list of WORST, i could do a whole seperate list for Biggest Disappointments.

THANK YOU ghostboy, my feelings exactly. I enjoyed most every movie I saw on some base level, with the exception of "The Rundown", "Underworld", and "The In-Laws". I hate to bask in the negative aspects of cinema; I just love movies as a whole way too much... I enjoyed Terminator 3, as well as Bad Boys 2. I actually would defend the Hulk as being a damn good movie, and I admired the cinematography of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I would even say I was pleasantly surprised by 2 fast 2 furious. Most of the time I try to avoid movies I know beyond a shadow of a doubt I will hate (Charlie's Angels, Cat in Hat, Honey, Radio)...

Quote from: godardianI absolutely loved Spider... maybe my favorite Cronenberg ever.
agreed.
i successfully avoided many supposed terrible film which is probably why I think this year isn't as bad as most seem to think it is. But Once Upon A Time in Mexico and The Last Samurai stand out as absolutely herrendous and inexcusable pieces of shit, mostly due to the potential they had, or they had it to me, at least. I'm a fan of Rodriguez's other two films in the "trilogy" and The Last Samurai had promise minus the fact that Tom Cruise was in it.
I hated Bringing Down the House. Steve Martin is usually funny, but this movie was terrible.
allow me to revise my list and remove Spider (since it was 2002), and replace it with probably (trying not to exaggerate) the worst movie i've ever seen in my entire life Gerry.

what a piece of shit. i dont even know where to begin. first of all, the only reason anyone is sitting through this 100 minutes of garbage in the first place is that its Gus Van Sant and has 'real stars' in it. if this exact EXACT same movie were made by some kid in college and starred his two buddies. not only would no one be talking about how good it was, but no one would be able to sit through it EVER. no studio would look at it and agree to put it out, no one would give them another job to ever work again after watching it. it was terrible.
i was prepared for a movie with no story about two guys wandering around talking about nothing. i was not prepared for unbroken shots that went on for 10 minutes and more that contained no talking or a still camera. if i want to look at a photograph ill do that. when i want to watch a movie, you better fucking have somebody talking or move the camera or SOMETHING. tell me a fucking story already!?? i dont want to watch somebodys art project, i want to see a movie.
this is an example of the absolute worst 'independent film' has to offer. a fucking bullshit 'art' movie with two assholes wandering around the desert. how so many of you were tricked into thinking that this was in any way 'good' i have no idea. who are you kidding?! this thing blew the hardest of any movie ever.
i wasn't "tricked" into anything. gee, another ad campaign gone awry modage?
i think it's top 5 movie of the year. i'd gladly watch it again a hundred more times.
Quote from: Pi wasn't "tricked" into anything. gee, another ad campaign gone awry modage?

what was good about it? i cant find one thing other than the pretty looking shots that lasted an hour.
it was hilarious.
Quote from: Pit was hilarious.
it would've been funnier if Matt and Casey had been conjoined twins. just imagine what wacky situations they would've gotten into?! like, what if they'd run into a woman and one of them wanted to date her!
seriously, there was a thread a while back about what a "self indulgent" film is. this should be the textbook example.
Gerry is Waiting for Godot for the new millenium. Seriously, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if, forty years from now, it's looked back upon as some kind of cinematic touchstone. People who say it's beautiful are right, people who say it's sad and moving are right, and P is right when he says it's funny.
I don't know about "people," would've viewed it the same exact way had it not been a Gus van Sant Brand Film, I guarantee you. And I don't like Matt Damon.
hav u seen Walkabout? i wouldn't say Gerry is as important a film as that. but it's a worthy (succesful) experiment for modern times. the question really is, is this enuff for a film. what is a film. wait, what am i doing here. ::head implodes::

Quote from: Weak2nd MacGuffin Trumpet1. Charlie's Angels 2: Full Throttle
Quote from: McGAnd strangely, I've found there's a direct correlation between the more intense the film fan, the more likely he or she is to actually embrace the picture. I've heard from Martin Scorsese to Terrence Malick to just fabulous filmmakers that I respect and they've shared their enthusiasm for the picture because these guys, they understand what it is, and naturally they know I'm not trying to threaten or challenge or in any disrespect what they're the masters of, so they take it for what it is and they enjoy themselves and they have fun with the performances.
isnt that weird? i dont even know how to imagine scorsese and malick going up to mcg and talking about charlies angels 2. wait it gets better...
Quote from: McGI think you have an obligation to your audience to try to improve upon the original in any respect. I think that's successfully done in Godfather II. I think it's very successfully done in Terminator 2. And we used those two models as our examples and we did the best we could.
the godfather 2 and terminator 2 were frames of reference for CA2. that is all.
-Gerry
-Dirty Pretty Things
Modernage really said it all with "Gerry", there's not much I can add. It saddened me that people praised it because I think it's a fucking crime that Gus put so little into this film and still got away with some good reviews, a couple REALLY good reviews even. It just plain saddens me that there's filmmaker's out there that put their heart and soul into their films, like just EVERYTHING they got and, for whatever reason, some of them aren't ever accepted....but somebody can make an artsy, empty movie likes this and get praised as a genius, that's bullshit. I mean, I'm not saying that "Gerry" was critically acclaimed, most critics saw right through it thankfully, but it got better reviews than it deserved. Empty films will almost always appear deeper than complex films cause they are so abstract or whatever, it's so lame....it's usually just lazy filmmaking in diguise. I wish Gus Van Sant hadn't made this kind of film cause I think he might be a genius looking at "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho"...really though, they were both on my top 30 for the dekapenticon thing, they're classics.
"Dirty Pretty Things" was just a bad film I thought. I hated the annoying comic relief from the hooker character above all things. I hated the ending. The film had no heart, it was just dark and gloomy and quirky....it didn't move me at all, I didn't feel anything for it. And Audrey Tautou's in it of all people, and it still didn't matter. She was the one redeeming value in the movie probably. Her and the main guy, he wasn't too bad...most of the acting was actually quite good, it was just the tone that I didn't get into at all.
Ebes... take some fuckin' Ritalin... then maybe you can talk about Gerry.

the thing about gus van sant is that his "avant garde" is so 30-years ago. he's doing things someone else has already done and recycling "artfilm" cliches that hasn't been cutting edge since the 60's.
