Not a single nom. for Punch-Drunk. So sad. Glad to see Adaptation is getting some recognition. Good choices for best cinematog., although would have liked to see Minority Report be on there.

Let's go Marty! This is your year!

Here, here!

Sandler not getting a actor nomination is surprising, but the rest of the noms are anything but suprising.

it's sad that celine dion isn't up for anything this year, cos i think it would be very nice to see her and eminem on the same stage.

and i think john c. reilly will be this year what jim broadbent was last year... an actor in so many great films will definitely get some recognition.

i'm kinda surprised that road t'p'dition didn't nab a best picture nomination...it was probably released too early.

No real surprises on here for me (except maybe no editing nom to Michael Kahn).  I'm glad to see John C. Reilly getting some much deserved recognition.  He's a great actor and I'm happy he's being viewed as such.

*weeps* for Road to Perdition.

It deserved a best picture nomination.

Yeah, the John C nom is the highlight. Talk to Her and Y Tu Mama Tambien getting director/writing, and writing, respectively, but NOT Foreign Film nom sucks.

Do we guess the winners now? Spirited Away is a lock. That's all I'm sure of though.

If Spirited Away doesn't win, than that category just needs to be retired.

I'm really disappointed. There are usually one or two good surprises, movies you're glad they remembered to nominate. Nothing really like that here, though. Julianne vs. Julianne is kinda interesting, I guess.

I am really amazed/happy for Pedro Almodovar getting nominated for best director and best original screenplay. Hell yeah!

One thing I don't get. First off, why are there only two films nominated for Makeup? Not that I know anything about makeup, but you would think elaborate productions like Gangs and Chicago would also get nominated. Also, why the fuck is the Time Machine nominated for an Academy Award?

RE: "Y Tu Mama Tambien" - Academy Rules for Best Foreign Film state: The film must be first released in the country of origin between November 1, 2001 and October 31, 2002. "Y Tu Mama Tambien" was released in Mexico on June 8, 2001.

RE: "Talk To Her" - Spain chose "Mondays In The Sun" to represent their country because it swept their Oscars called the Goya Awards and shut out "Talk".

But both films, since they were released in the US in 2002, were eligible for all other catagories. So the Academy isn't so dumb; they know how to honor these films in other ways.

Nothing shocking... just the same offensive shit.

PDL getting nothing isn't surprising, but it's still disapointing and Chicago getting nominated for best picture just makes it worse.

I like that J-Mo is nominated twice.

Adaptation getting nominated for best adapted is like when O Brother got nominated for best adapted because of being "based" on Homer's Odysee.

The Academy knows Selma Hayek's back story with her struggle to get Frida made, so she'll probably win even though she probably doesn't deserve it (I haven't seen Frida, so I can't be sure, I'm just basing it off her previous performances).

I'd like to see Queen Latifa win an Oscar.

Paul Simon will probably win best song just because there's no Disney song up this year.  (though Eminem probably has a shot too).

So, who's hosting OUR awards show?

Peeves:
PDL obviously
No Andy Serkis (was it a possibility in the 1st place?)
The Wild Thornberrys song (although I love Paul Simon) instead of Jon Brions song from PDL.
Sam Mendes

Pleased :
Conrad Hall
JCR
Christopher Walken

Its just annoying that they had a few opportunities, to throw in some wild cards to spice things up a bit, but now the ceremonies going to be pretty uninteresting for me.

...although I've still gotta see a lot of the films opening near me this weekend.

Good News: Michael Moore is going to win an Oscar. I can't wait for his speech. Talk to Her getting nominated for screenplay & director, although you know it's just going to come in last place, without even a foreign nomination. Meryl Streep & Chris Cooper for Adaptation, although we all know Streep had a leading performance.

Bad News: No PDL, no PTA, no Sandler. LOTR, Chicago, Michael Caine, the Holocaust movie, Michael Caine, Road to Perdition, LOTR. So predictable overall. So predictable.

I have high hopes for our nominations. Maybe they will be revealed today!

Go Holland go Holland, it's your birthday!

Haha , some shitty movie outta me country got a nod, I was drinking some water and sprayed that shit all over the room when I saw it had a foreign film nomination, couldn't believe it.. Because I didn't even see it; it's some shitty romance pic, only good thing about it, is that it's shot in cinemascope.. Guess I'll rent it sometime, but definitely not a deserved nomination- although still fuckin unbelievable funny... (the flick is entitled "Zus en Zo" and I heard Hollywood was planning on doing a remake... what's new  :? ...)

RK- totally agree - why Adaptation is in the best adapted screenplay category I have no idea. I think it's the most "original" screenplay to come out of Hollywood in some time.

Lots of people that saw the movie thought that the score was intrusive and hated it. The academy is there to please the audiences of the popular movies so people can think they're film buffs.

Just kidding, sometimes the academy does good things. It's fun to watch, anyway.

A really touching acceptance speech for Conrad Hall by Daniel Craig.

Charlie and Donald Kaufman wrote a really funny acceptance speech for Meryl Streep to read and managed to mess it up..

"I'd like to Spank....ok.... thank Spike Jonze"

QuoteAward winner Saul Zaentz used his acceptance speech to criticise George W Bush.

Zaentz, whose production credits have included One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, won a Bafta fellowship at the Orange British Academy Awards.

He criticised government for the few by the few and told guests: "In the words of Martin Luther King, we shall overcome."

This had everyone standing for applause.

Quote from: cbrad4dMeryl Streep gave an acceptance speech? But she didn't win.

She read the Kaufman's acceptance speech for them from a sheet of paper, as they couldn't attend. But they wrote it so that it would mess with her. Writing in the first person in some places and the 3rd in others so that Meryl Streep unmodestly praised her own performance and the occasional "that was me - Charlie, speaking by the way".

Yeah, they are, but I'll still watch. More for nostalgia reasons, though, when their nominations meant something. Not like last year where it was completely based on...well, I'm not sure what it was based on, but you all know what I'm talking about. As for this years nominations, does anyone have a problem with The Hours getting so many nominations. There were actually a lot of good fairly mainstream films this year, but The Hours is considered one of the best? I don't think so. Though, I've heard you have to be a woman to properly enjoy it.

First off, f*** 'Chicago'!!!
An over-rated, over-flashy and depthless piece of junk that while it did pack the cinema that I saw it in, many people were seen (and heard) falling asleep. The only character I liked was John C. Reilley's (his musical number blew Jones's, Zellweger's and Gere's out of the water).
Yeah for Marty, though. He better get the Oscar or there will truly be no sense in the world.
I dont think I'll ever get over 'PDL's snub. PTA, the screenplay, cinematography, score and Sandler were especially more than worthy of recognition. Sandler should've at least won at the Globes. I felt so sorry for him (he looked so happy during the nomination call) but like PTA said in a recent interview, the Oscar's will never notice someone like Adam.
I'm happy for 'Adaptation'. That movie was terrific.
Nicholson was a delight in 'Schmidt' and more than deserved his nom and Globe win.
'Two Towers', 'Perdition', 'Minority', and 'Catch Me' gladly also got noms.

But other than those, I consider this year's Oscars to be a major f*** up.

Actually, the big reason why it wasn't nominated (this year or any other) was because Mexico decided not to submit it to the Academy for a nomination in that category, because the content concerning Mexican poverty and violence in the film made their country look bad.

It's gotta be a reward for all his hard work propping up the names this year, though I don't think he's doing himself many favours. If he had to be nominated I wish it had been for The Good Girl rather than fucking (spit) Chicago, which is just part of the effort to re-establish the musical. And I agree that if someone had to be up for that shit, then it should be Gere, even if he can't dance, because at least his overall performance had some energy. I found Reilly's number embarrassingly under-charged.
But I blame the director really.

Outraged also about Kidman (who will probly win) and not Moore and Streep. Also that Streep is counted as supporting. I would love to see Christopher Walken win, and Nicholas Cage should win, but I will enjoy crazy Dan dissolving in tears, and the levitating ovation for Scorsese.

Eminem To Boycott Oscars?

Reports from the US indicate that Oscar-nominee Eminem will not be appearing at the prestigious Academy Awards ceremony to perform his track 'Lose Yourself' off his film '8 Mile.'

A source at Interscope Records has been quoted by WENN news as saying that the rapper turned actor is taking time off out of the spotlight and as a result won't be performing or attending the March 23 awards show at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

As previously reported Eminem is nominated in the Best Original Song category for 'Lose Yourself'. Other nominees include U2 (for 'The Hands That Built America' from 'Gangs of New York') and Paul Simon, for 'Father and Daughter' from 'The Wild Thornberrys Movie') both of whom are tipped to perform.

His decision may also have been influenced by reports that Oscar organisers have been worried about handling a live performance as the track includes some strong language. Oscar academy president Gil Cates has already been quoted as guaranteeing that show would be as unobjectionable as possible saying,

"The Academy Awards show is a show for the family. I mean, everyone watches the show, and we're very much aware of that. Obviously we would not knowingly have anything on the show which would be offensive."
