I thought there was a thread of this, but I didn't see one. IMDB's plot summarizes it as: "A young man is struggling to get over harmful memories from his childhood, but while doing so discovers a technique that allows him to travel back in time and occupy his childhood body changing his history forever. However he also discovers that every change he makes some how alters his future."
I watched the trailer from the official site.. it looks alright.. I want to say it looks better, because its a sci fi thriller with Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, with Melora Walters as Kutcher's sister. The people who wrote and directed it are the same ones who penned Final Destination 2, so who knows how this will turn out. But I hope its better than it looks.

Oh fuck, I was hoping this would be good but FD2 was terrible
Yeah, I'm trying my best to keep that out of my head since FD2 was just a dull retread of the first one (which I liked a lot for the premise).. so maybe they're going to make something interesting here. If Peter Berg can go from Very Bad Things to The Rundown, I think its possible... I'm trying to keep the faith...
....i saw the trailer and it does look rather hip and glossy(like Stigmata) or something of the like......it sucks that is has ashton it .....especially with that pubescent goatee he's got.....
The trailer looks very cool... I only hope is not one of those movies where the only good stuff is what they show in the trailer... and lets see if Ashton can do something besides look for his car

this movie looks fuckin hilarious
I just saw the trailer today, and I thought it looked good. Ashton actually looks grown up and serious in this part. I'm hoping for the best.

I've seen quite a few trailers that don't put in all the best footage. It seems only the bad films pack all their best shots into the trailer as if they know the movie sucks.
Am I the only one who got a kick out of seeing Ethan Suplee as The Big Fat Goth in this trailer?

No, no your not. He seems to be more of a goth punk, which I kinda am. Ethan Suplee is Hollywood's husky go-to man!

That's what I was going to say. :-D
Sorry P, I looked for a thread on this but somehow missed it at first... anywho, here ya go, in it's PROPER place...
Went to a press screening of this piece of cinematic excrement last week, and I have to say it's quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen.
I feel the need to speak up about this because I was recently perusing AICN, and a critic that I normally (for the most part) respect was raving on and on about how "brilliant" this film was. The critic was Quint, I'm sure most of you are familiar with him... What worries me is his implication that this piece-of-shit film was getting fantastic buzz, at Sundance of all places... Am I off my rocker? Has anyone seen this abomination and enjoyed it? Is the world so fucked up now that not even a film literate asshole like Quint can recognize amateur garbage when he sees it? If this film gets good reviews from the legit critics, I'm gonna kill myself...
Now, some may be asking, what's so terrible about this film? Let me tell you.
1. Ashton Kutcher couldn't act his way out of a fuckin' paper bag. For proof, of course, see the thread that recounts how Cameron Crowe fired him from Elizabethtown for this very reason. Quint, on the other hand, thinks that TBE fully proved Kutcher's ability to take on "Serious" roles.
2. The story is trying so hard to be a 'hip' indie film a la Donnie Darko and Memento, that it forgets about little things like consistency, character development, and plot cohesion. Quint, on the other end, says "this is the most intelligent, unpredictable, unformulaic sucker punch of a movie this side of Donnie Darko." NO, it's the biggest piece of shit/ waste of time this side of "Glitter."
3. I've now lost all respect for Melora Walters. She is TERRIBLE. Possibly the worst performance in the entire film, which is saying A LOT.
It's late, I'm tired and I'm quickly losing the ability to articulate my thoughts and opinions in an intelligent way, so I'm just gonna say this:
I don't normally get this worked up over a shitty movie. They get made all the time, it's part of life. But go see this film, and tell me it's not the most appalling piece of trash to be greenlit this side of "Ishtar."
That is all.

the second i saw the trailer i thought, "someone is trying to capitalize on the cultism of Donnie Darko....." and someone else above has mentioned DD too.
hhmmm, so i wonder if a lot of people will be thinking DD is a rip off of this film when it is rereleased this summer? or perhaps it could point people to it and then they see it is a superior film......
who knows the minds of john and Jane Q. viewer?
Butterfly Effect looks like shit. Donnie Darko will be much better, but even then I'm not a terrible fan of Donnie Darko. Either way, anything with Ashton Kutcher can't be that good. Let's not kid ourselves here. Seriously.

Regarding whether people will think DD is a rip off the DUMP Effect when it gets re-released this summer... ah, NO.

I still can't get over the staind song in the trailer.
So did anyone see it this weekend? I personally thought it didn't make much sense, but overall entertaining. Donnie Darko makes this movie look like shit though.
This movie really didn't work for me. There were too many scenarios and the acting was pretty bad (even Melora Walters). If they had a better script with some better actors, it could have been very good. Overall, I'd say an interesting thumbs down.
Quote from: Sydney (Dr. Strangelove)If they had a better script with some better actors, it could have been very good.
That's quite a huge chunk of the movie there. Was the directing sufficient enough?
I dunno, time-traveling through staring at words really, really hard, has gotta be by far the most unsophisticated time-traveling method ever in the film history. But the special effects did look pretty convincing, the part where they used matting to make it appear that Ashton Kutcher could read.

Q. How in the world was The Rundown more interesting than Very Bad Things?!
A. Oh, oh, I know, Very Bad Things didn't have Stiffler and The Rock starring in a dumb action film.
I didn't care much for the movie, but it was intriguing enough to keep me watching it, and I actually thought both Ashton and Amy Smart gave really good performances. There were some pretty moving scenes, but then the sci-fi element would kick in. Also, some of the material with the kids was just too disturbing to work in this sort of movie. There was a good deal potential, though, so I personally wouldn't write off the writer/director duo just yet.
very bad things is like a student film that lasted two hours, where it's all dark and darker and darker, like that's really gonna shock anybody or is still funny.
the rundown has ONE pretty cool fight scene where Ernie Reyes Jr. as one of the pigmies kicks the Rock's ass. that was the best AMERICAN fight scene to come out of 2003--better than yoda, better than neo vs. robots, better than uma being doubled by a chunky guy, better than stifler and chow yunfat, or charlie's angels, or any other instances where white people pertended they could fight this year.
I thought it was pretty bad. While, production wise, it was ok, the acting was jsut terrible. And, surprisingly, not jsut from kutcher. Everyone sucked. Even Melora Walters. I'm starting to think that she is a terrible actress and only PTA can get decent stuff out of her. She annoyed the hell out of me in 'Matchstick men' too, and she was only on screen for like 30 seconds. She was terrible there too.
The overall concept and story could have been really good. I've always been into time-travel or whatever stuff like that, but in the end, it failed horribly. AS far as dialogue goes, it is probly the crappiest ever. I honestly can't remember a film with worst dialogue. Not jsut in the delivery, but the words themselves are transparent and were obviously thrown in in the hopes of making the story hold together. That last comment kinda sounds stupid, seeing as, obviously, dialogue advances the story and attempts to make sense of it, but in 'butterfly effect', it jsut reaks of plot holes.
One reason I was so disappointed was because I had seen an interview with the director and writter, I think, and they were saying that it was a very different and very controversial film. HOW IS IT CONTROVERSIAL. I really hate when people throw that word around in an attempt to create some 'buzz' for their sucky films. Plus, Kutcher was interviewed and he said he only did this film cause he wanted to do a serious role for once. I mean, I'm all for honesty, but don't try to seem so retarded. At least try to create the illusion that you took the role cause it interested you or you saw something good in it. Jeez, what a retard.
***Spoiler***
As far as plot holes go, this movie reeks of them. Like, for example, shouldn't kutcher be dying at the very end when everything raps up nice and neat? In the previous timeline, the doctor said his brain was about to explode because of all the memories he had absorbed, but then it all gets solved and everyones happy. The fuck.
Worst line ever: 'Well, when your father was about your age...well, exactly your age, now that you mention it...'
I burst out laughing in the theatre at how terrible that line was. And they even used it again as a flashback voice over, or whatever its called.

hahaha, i'm totally watching this for the badness. these lines are pure cheese as NEON would say.
I thought Melora Walters was a really good choice as the mom, but she was pretty awful just like the rest of them.
Quote from: QuoyleI thought Melora Walters was a really good choice as the mom, but she was pretty awful just like the rest of them.
Yeah...and if all the actors were bad, its pretty obvious it was jsut a bad script. Too bad, it could have been really cool.

:? Ah, no and no.
The party scenes in Very Bad Things with the prostitute and the bachelor party gone awry - alone - are better, more inventive, and more entertaining than the entire steaming hot pile of excrement that was The Rundown. One cool fight scene does not a movie make.

When I finished watching this I thought, eh it wasn't that bad. Then as I thought over it, this movie really blew. I won't really go into what has already been killed to death in this thread about the acting. it was abominable. Kutcher's range was from stupid look of confusion to half laugh/half sad smirk. I think the screenwriter was sitting at his computer one day and his computer crashed. And he hit his Xp restore point and thought "hey what if life was this".
Spoilers: the directors cut ending is just really laughable. Kutcher strangles himself in the womb and was never born.
I actually laughed at a good amount of stuff. Classic is when Kutcher blew his arms off and tried to grab a granola bar with his fake hands.
I thought the story progression was pretty good actually with the tragedies the kids went through and it showed them progression. The need to concoct a peferct ending for everyone's life just ruins it.
It's not even too the point where "it's so terrible it's actually good". I saw it once in theatre's because when I saw the trailer I thought it might be an interesting concept. But I remember coming out of the theatre angry at myself that I spend actual hard earned cash on it. STAY AWAY!....
whoa, finally, someone on this board went out to see The Butterfly Effect for us. thank you.
