Title: pynchon on the simpsons
Post by: samuelclemens on October 16, 2003, 02:02:27 AM
has anyone heard of thomas pynchon?  i've never read anything by him, but just last week my friend recommended him to me and then i read that he is a recluse and has never been photographed, interviewed and no one even knows where he lives, but he's going to be on the simpsons.  only he's going to be wearing a bag on his head throughout the show, but it is his voice.  i'm glad i knew that background, otherwise i'd be in the dark as to why some guy is wearing a bag on his head.
i guess the simpsons can get anyone to do their show.  michael jackson (more amazing, because he was uncredited and obviously didn't do it for publicity, although the show did speak highly of him through bart).  and tony blair will be on an upcoming episode.  only if they could lure sallinger from his home.

I keep meaning to read some Pynchon.  I have 'Mason and Dixon' and have read the first 100 pages a couple time and keep meaning to get through it.  I'm a tool.

yeah, i need to restore my faith in literature and that it's not dead and gone.  maybe he will do that for me.  maybe i'll hear of all the great authors now in fifty years.  but all i hear of are crap.  stephen king is decent.  but where are the writers with balls (don't take it the wrong way, applies to women just as much).  maybe i don't look hard enough.
btw, i love your avatar.  that's a cool little flick.

My new avatar is 'gross' and 'freaky' to some, but if they don't get the joke, then f them.

(as for writers, I like what Dave Eggers is trying to do-- with his books and publishing company)

if you watch the film, even on a tv...when it cuts to that scene, the region around the eye is very hairy....it almost looks like it could be real, but I am a pretty hairy dude...no one has jungle muff of the eye, like in this.

Thomas Pynchon... yes. Gravity's Rainbow. A marvelous book. A much more interesting guest voice than John Updike! (Though that WAS awfully funny.)

I've heard good things of The Crying of Lot 49, have you read it?

I've read Gravity's Rainbow and thought it was amazing.  I know someone who read The Crying Lot of 49 and thought thats was great as well.
