When the fuck are they gonna release this on DVD??? Region 1...or 4...
what are they waiting for???
shit...
region one was on dvd, but is now out of print. the re-release has been delayed.
Are you sure? I remember a bare-bones disc was scheduled for last summer, and then they decided to add more to it so it got pushed to early '03....and then nothing.
Yeah, I challenge that info mod-age. I don't believe "Ed Wood" was ever released on DVD (region 1). I would have owned it.
It has, however been released on Region 2:

When Ed Wood was finally announced for release on DVD, it looked most likely to be bare-bones al the way. But rumor has it that Tim Burton stepped in himself to ensure that his richest, most personal film would get the treatment it deserved for its long-awaited DVD premiere. And fortunately, Buena Vista truly went the distance on this one, producing a wide range of formidable supplements.
The audio commentary starts off in just the right spirit, with a short introduction from Martin Landau, speaking in-character as Bela Lugosi, with whose voice he continues to pop up throughout the track, identifying the various speakers wherever necessary. It adds a fittingly droll touch as well as being helpful. The main speakers besides Landau (who also adds some comments in his 'own voice') include director Tim Burton, screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, and costume designer Colleen Atwood. Together, they cover an enormous amount of ground, with terrific editing yielding many screen-specific comments as well as informative and highly entertaining anecdotes about the production history and the screenplay development (Alexander and Karaszewski are the real standouts here). A well-produced and immensely lively track that's sure to please any fan of the film.
The rest of the extras are made up of a large selection of featurettes covering quite a number of different subjects. 'Let's Shoot This $#@%!' is a highly eccentric behind-the-scenes look shot while the film was being produced. Johnny Depp acts as a kind of deranged host, more or less in-character as Ed Wood and dressed in the bizarre outfit he wears during the wrap party sequence for Bride of the Monster. The 15-minute item includes quite abit of footage, both in color and in black-and-white, of Burton working with cast and crew on the set. The other three featurettes were all produced especially for this DVD release. Each takes a good look at one specific aspect of the film's production. Pie Plates over Hollywood is the most elaborate, with a running time of just over 15 minutes, focusing on the challenges of shooting in black-and-white, working with miniatures, and the specifics of recreating the uniue look of Ed Wood's movies. Cinematographer Stephan Czapsky is on hand for comprehensive elaborations on all of these topics. The Theremin runs about ten minutes, and features new interview footage with composer Howard Shore, who discusses his work on the score in great detail, and demonstrates the theremin, an early electronic musical instrument that is played by waving one's hands around in the invisible magnetic field above the theremin itself. Its sound is typical of Hollywood-produced science-fiction movies of the 1950s, and it plays a key role in the film's excellent, varied score. Recreating Bela Lugosi is a short featurette with Martin Landau and Rick Baker, in which the make-up process that helped Landau win his Best Supporting Actor Oscar is revealed. When Carol Met Larry has nothing to do with the actual production of Ed Wood, but offers some relevant interview footage with a cross-dressing couple. Finally, the theatrical trailer rounds out these excellent extras.

no maybe you're right. i could be wrong. i thought there was a bare-bones edition that atleast went to video stores when it came out but really wasnt sell-thru. but i could be wrong about that.
Yet another disc that would make a region 2 player totally worthwhile. Why the HELL hasn't that been released stateside?
It's coming!!!!!
Very soon!

I heard there were some problems with certain rights of something or other... I heard this at some panel discussion sometime last year... I'm used to waiting for the best stuff to come out... we all remember what happened with the Back to the Future box set... (if you don't know, it changed release dates like 9 times because of certain Eric Stoltz footage and other mishaps)...

Buena Vista Home Entertainment has at long last announced Tim Burton's masterpiece Ed Wood. Johnny Depp stars as the high-spirited movieman who refuses to let unfinished scenes, terrible reviews, and hostile studio executives derail his big-screen dreams. The long-awaited DVD arrives with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Bonus features include an audio commentary (with director Tim Burton, actor Martin Landau, screenwriters Scott Alexander & Larry Karazewski, costume designer Colleen Atwood, and cinematographer Stefan Czapsky), deleted scenes, "Let's Shoot This F#*%@r!" behind-the-scenes documentary, the featurettes "The Theremin," "Making Bela" (a look at Rick Baker's amazing prosthetic work), "Pie Plates Over Hollywood" (realizing the offbeat and stunning visuals with production designer Tom Duffield), "When Carol Met Larry" (meet real-life cross-dressers and hear their take on the infamous filmmaker), an original music video co-directed by Burton and choreographer Toni Basil, and the original theatrical trailer. Look for Ed Wood: DVD Director's Cut on February 3rd 2004 with a retail of $29.99.
I think I speak officially for all of us when I say Kick Fucking Ass!
yeah i just watched about 20 minutes of this the other day on cable and i havent seen it since it came out on video (and didnt know much about ed wood), and it seems frickin hilarious. i cant wait to watch it again.
This is my favorite film by Burton (who I've always found rather more ordinary than his fans seem to), so I am looking forward to it.
The first time I really took Bill Murray seriously...
Yah, same here (again). I saw Razor's Edge afterwards, but I enjoy Murray more in Ed Wood. I think it's one of the few great movies that should go right up there with Fargo, Pulp Fiction, etc. as one of the 90's best movies. A true masterpiece and I'd love to see Burton make a better picture. I don't think he can, but I don't mind if he doesn't... Can't WAIT for the DVD.
shit. JUST after i bought the region 2. god smiles upon my misfortune.
Quote from: bonanzatazshit. JUST after i bought the region 2. god smiles upon my misfortune.
If you're not happy with the r2 disc, you can eBay it before word spreads about the r1 version.
Quote from: bonanzatazshit. JUST after i bought the region 2. god smiles upon my misfortune.
Um.... besides the transfer (I'm assuming r1 will be ntsc) the two dvds are identical. Plus I think the Region 2 is cheaper (at least from where I bought it). I'm perfectly content, in fact GIDDY about the r2 DVD... everything I could've wanted. Raging Bull r2, however, leaves much to be desired. BUT I have the movie and that's all that matters to me right now... I'll probably pick up the r1 as soon as mgm gets their fucking asses into gear.
Quote from: samsongRaging Bull r2, however, leaves much to be desired.
Just like the region1. :( I want better Scorsese DVD's.
well, with the r1 dvd you can at least tell that it doesnt have much with it. The r2 i got was a special edition. Transfer is pretty good, but the extras are a joke. There's a 24 minute doc about the film that is awesome but that's about it... the special features start and end there. The rest is absolute shit, except a newsreel of one of La Motta's actual fights.
But I'm glad I finally have the movie.
and I agree... need better Scorsese DVDs. Supposedly next year will be one for the Scorsese fans. There's a rumored plethora of Scorsese special editions coming out next year of all his greats already on DVD, plus After Hours and his earlier films like Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore and Who's That Knocking at My Door? If that's true, I'll be fucking ecstatic... with Ikiru and The Rules of the Game + Tati films coming out on Criterion, I'll already be in DVD heaven.
YES!!!YES!!!! I knew it had to happen sometime!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ALSO, according to dvdfile, it will be TWO DISCS. :-D
i rented this on video a few weeks ago. i didn't really like it that much. i really like Beetlejuice and Ed S. do i need to see an actual Ed Wood film to appreciate it more? has anyone seen any Wood films?
i've seen ed wood films, but only after i saw tim burton's movie and loved it too intensely.

Well, here's disappointing news. Buena Vista's Ed Wood: Special Edition (previously scheduled for release on 2/3) has been indefinitely delayed... again. We've been receiving a lot of e-mails from our retail sources over the last 12 hours, and we've just heard official word from the studio. We have no idea why this might be happening, or when the title might be re-slated for release, but you can be sure we'll update you with anything we hear.
well... um... the bright side?? It makes Feb a little easier on the wallet...
ah... yeah, I know
fuck
NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Feb 3 is going to hell.
Quote from: CinephileFeb 3 is going to hell.

god fucking dammit
Hehehe, I just read this on the Criterion board:
We have a quick update for you on the now delayed Ed Wood: Special Edition. We've been getting a LOT of e-mails from confused retailers, many of whom are telling us that they've already received their shipments of the disc from distributors. The disc had been scheduled for release on 2/3, and many Suncoast stores already have it in their back rooms. However, we HAVE confirmed with the studio that the disc has been indefinitely delayed, so we expect that the disc will get recalled soon and stores will have to return their shipments. No doubt some copies will escape and find their way to eBay. Many readers have noticed that the disc is no longer available on Amazon, and it has been removed from the studio's press site. We'll try to let you know why it was delayed as soon as possible, and we'll post any information pertaining to a new street date as soon as it comes in.

But Mr. Eisner seemed oh-so nice in all his years presenting Disney programming on network television...
Remember the immortal creed he made on his noticeboard: "We have no obligation to make art. We have no obligation to make a statement. To make money is our only objective."
In the spirit of those words and in honor of that man, why not liberate all stores of any backroom supply of Ed Wood-SE DVD's and sell them for profit? Michael would understand.
Classic. I would love to "liberate" myself a copy of this...
*Trashes room* Delayed??
DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN
Is there someone who has a finger to the pulse of film lovers everywhere to know which ones to make us want it more? This poop they pulled with PDL and Kill Bill, now with Ed Wood?
Life is cruuuuuuuuuuuuuel!!!!!!!!!!!!!
alright if these will start floating around like the Duel's are, i am pleading to you guys. ONE of you out there must know someone who works at a Suncoast and can get your hands on a few of these. i will be more than willing to pay the shipping and cost of the dvd. PLEASE see if you can wrangle up some of these.

Anybody with common sense will sell it on ebay anyway. So let's not try to get a hold of it.
why is this delayed? I mean really, why? I do not understand this. Obviously they have the product produced. Is there some sort of fight over the copyrights or royalties? This is ridiculous i just do not understand why a studio would continue to withhold the dvd release of a film with a built in audience and from such a respected director. To me, this makes no sense at all, none.

The discs are pressed, as evidenced by the Ebay listings. Perhaps there was a quality control issue or Tim Burton wasn't happy with it? Either way it sucks that we have to wait yet again for the DVD.
Holy shit I just got mine from my local DVD guy who sells em early.
Holy shit, what do I do?!
This is so.....wait a sec. Ed's Wood? Hard Core Action?
DAMN YOU TET KAKIMOTO FROM A1 VIDEO!!!!
O.K, first of all, I know it may sound stupid but you guys need to find yourselves a region-free player because the same edition with the same features and a decent transfer of Ed Wood is available in England at a very affordable price (compared to that e-bay price you gave). And second of all, Chuckhimselfo en Paris, where did you get that Parappa ? I WANT ONE !!! (tell me you bought i from a store in Paris because I live there so I would just go and buy one now...)
I was in a local music/movie store today when I ran into my friend who just happens to be the Asst. manager of said store. After talking for a bit, I remembered about the Ed Wood dvd. Sure enough they had a couple, and had recieved no word, as of yet, to send them back. When i told her how much they are going for on Ebay she promptly sold me 2 copies (one for me, one to sell) and bought one for herself. Even breaking streetdate. So super score, I got a copy of one of my favortie movies and some free money. today is a good day! :-D :-D :-D
This recall is super bizarre. Anybody heard anything else about WHY???
Are they thinking of something as silly as repackaging to take advantage of Depp's and Murray's Oscar nominations??
I'm kissing my R2 copy right now.
Ugh, probably.
They'll slap on those tacky "oscar nominated actor" brackets beside everyone's name.
Kinda like when I bought Gerry yesterday, and on the front cover, in huge letters, it says "from the director of Goodwill Hunting and Finding Forrestor". Fuck. That almost makes me not want to own the dvd. Like, they're stooping that low to try and sell a few extra copies. Barking up the wrong tree, and all that...
okay fellow ed wood-philes here's the skinny:
all of the dvds that have been leaked, well at least the ones I bought and the ones on E-bay, are all coming from the same chain: Wherehouse Music. They used to be owned by Blockbuster then they were sold and only a few stores were left open, so i don't know if any of you live in a city with one that is still open. anyway, my friend who works there was telling me that the with the new ownership, all things like release dates, recall notices etc... are reall screwed up and taking a long time to deciminate. hence why they still have their copies and have gotten no word to send them back. A lot of the stores have already put them on the shelves not even realizing its a new release.
So if you have a Wherehouse Music in your town, go there now, and look for the DVD. If it's not on the shelf here's what you do. Ask someone to put it on hold for you untill next wednesday. Now you can either come back them or just go back the next day, and tell a different employee you have a dvd on hold. Of course Wherehouse is pricey, my dvd was like $30 but whatever, who knows when they'll decide to release this thing. I know the Atlanta Wherehouse Music on Peachtree in Buckhead still has at least one copy. Good Luck!
But I must say from looking at the packaging and DVD itself I think the assumption that they want to use the recent success of those involved to promote this release is right on. The cast listing on the back credits: "Tim Burton (Big Fish, Batman), funnyman Bill Murray (Lost in Translation) Sarah Jessica Parker (TV's Sex and the City), and Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Carribbean, Chocolat). " haha funnyman Bill Murray!? not to mention the actual DVD looks kind of funny, I mean it has a stock listing number on it and has a label that advises: for technical assistance with this Touchstone DVD call..." never seen that before. I bet they'll recall all these, wait for the oscars to see who wins, then re-release it with a sticker on the packaging announcing: "From Academy Award Winners Tim Burton and Bill Murray" or something.
I have a copy at my store :). They don't know anything about a recall. I can get it tuesday for any willing buyers. :)
apparently a lot of stores dont know about the recall yet. weird that it would hit online like an epidemic before they even sent out memos to the damn retailers. i am trying like hell to get one from one of my old friends new girlfriend who works at a Suncoast and says that they have them but still havent gotten a recall notice. hopefully if tuesday comes and they havent they'll go out EVERYwhere, and i'll be able to get one. if not, moviemike, you might want to set aside a few just in case...
also, not sure if this is a joke, but at amazon...

By the way, we STILL have no follow-up statements from Buena Vista regarding their postponement of the Ed Wood: Special Edition. Interestingly, Amazon.ca is now showing an April 4th street date, but until we hear something from the studio, I wouldn't think much of it.
In the Sunday Best Buy advertisement, it lists "Ed Wood" as available Tuesday with a $19.99 price, but the web site does not list it. Could be the advert was made before the recall. Same with the Circuit City ad and site. Could be worth a visit, or at least a phone call to see if they have any in stock.
yeah i keep wondering. if some of these stores dont have any idea about the recall yet, then theyre going to go out on shelves on tuesday, arent they? i'm gonna check across the street at tower records, when i go to get lost in translation, cause i really dont want to miss out on these.
this is just super weird. i bet several stores put it out on Tuesday. If Buena Vista really wants to get this recall out they are doing a poor job of it. If Wal-mart has them I can almost gurantee they'll be on the shelves come tuesday.

How's this for a screwed up situation? Despite Buena Vista's insistence to us that the Ed Wood: Special Edition has been indefinitely postponed, it seems that several retailers may still be planning on putting it up for sale tomorrow. Best Buy has been advertising it in their weekend circulars, and it seems likely that other chains will have copies for sale as well. We're hearing that many Suncoast stores have yet to be told NOT to stock the disc on their shelves. All this despite the fact that it's no longer available from many online retailers.
Honestly, we have no idea what to think at this point. Buena Vista STILL hasn't issued an official public statement, or given a reason for the supposed postponement. So the best we can tell you is, if you want the disc, get out to your local retailers tomorrow morning. You may just get lucky.

(LATE UPDATE - 2/2/04 - 4:30 PM PST)
We have a late update for you on the Ed Wood DVD. Several store managers and staffers have e-mailed us this afternoon, since our last post, with word that Suncoast locations HAVE been told NOT to put copies of Ed Wood on the floor for sale tomorrow. Word is, the stores will be sending back the copies they received in the next couple of weeks. Just FYI. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed us with this information.
fuck. i really want one of these.
anyone who gets one tomorrow might want to pick up an extra if they have the cash...
As tempted as I am to scour the stores looking for this DVD, I think I'll wait. But damn, I am tempted.
Will these re-called DVD's be legitimately worth something or will too many of them have already been leaked out?
Well, according to the digital representation of American consumerism (eBay) they are still going for $50+. Guess you'll have to wait until tomorrow and see if a big chain lets the DVD's fly. My money is on Wal-Mart or Spec's.
fuck, my old friends new girlfriends suncoast sent them back. looks like im shit out of luck. i'll give tower records a shot tomorrow, but i doubt i'll find any. and let me re-iterate i would be very grateful to anyone who can score an extra copy and paypal you back the money.

Yet another Ed Wood update: we've now heard from a few Best Buy store managers, who tell us that they too have been told not to place copies of the Ed Wood: Special Edition on their shelves for sale later this morning. It seems that the circulars were printed weeks ago, prior to the recall going into effect. So while I suspect there will be retailers who missed the memo and start selling the disc tomorrow, you'll be hard pressed to find copies at Best Buy or any of the Musicland Group stores (Suncoast, Sam Goody, etc). In any case, if you're going out looking for it, good luck. And we'll post anything we heard from the studio as soon as it comes in.
Today, I went on a little hunt and obtained two copies of Ed Wood. I haven't decided if I'm going to keep one for myself, but one, of course, I'd definitely sell. I thought I'd give you fine Xixaxers first shot at it because I love you oh so very much*. So PM me with your offers, and I'll probably sell one to the best offer within the next two or three days. I might sell the second one here, too, if the price is right. Otherwise, I'll keep it myself or put it on E-bay.
"Ed Wood? Who wouldn't?! I give it 83 stars. Oh-ho-whoa-whoa-whoo!"

*Ono receives money for his services and does not love any of you. Well, maybe a little.
Quote from: OnomatopoeiaToday, I went on a little hunt and obtained two copies of Ed Wood.
From what store? I tried Suncoast, Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's Electronics, Wherehouse and Target. No such luck.
ono, how about letting one go at cover price?
Borders. They were on the cart, not yet put out on the shelf, and so I yanked 'em right when he showed me. Guess they didn't get wind of the recall yet. So I followed that lead, and went to Barnes and Noble, but they did know. So did Circuit City. Wal-Mart hadn't even heard of the DVD (or at least the guy working there didn't), and Best Buy hadn't any record of it, either.
Okay... we've got another post coming later this afternoon. But in the interest of helping as many of you find copies of the Ed Wood: Special Edition as possible, without having to buy it on eBay for $100+ from would-be profiteers (which is just plain wrong), we wanted to update you on where readers are finding it. Supposedly, Borders has put it up for sale, along with many Costco locations (and probably other warehouse retailers as well). We've had readers tell us that a few Best Buys locations have also made it available for sale. Some Fred Meyer store locations apparently have it available, and many of those who were smart enough to pre-order the disc on Amazon are being told via e-mail that their discs have shipped. The message is that the disc is out there, and you should act fast if you want it.
Just FYI, Buena Vista has finally spoken on the record with Video Business, and claims that they're looking for a "better date to release the DVD". Given the amount of money the studio and retailers stand to lose by pulling the disc at the 11th hour, it stretches credibility to believe that's the only reason. We've now heard off the record from sources that the title was pulled over a rights issue regarding material that was included in the supplements. If that's true, it would mean that any future release will likely be altered in some way (some extras might be edited or dropped entirely from the disc). VB has also apparently heard a rumor that director Tim Burton wasn't happy with the extras. In any case, it seems likely that whatever the reason is, the disc will be released again in the future but not with the same bonus material. So use that information as you will.
------------------------------------------------------
anyone check Costco? anyone have an extra for me?

When I read this I ran back out to Best Buy and got the last 2 :) So I have 2 extra copies. Send me a pm if you want one, Im not looking to turn profit so if you pay me for shipping and tax ill be happy ;)

Even thought most of ya hate Blockbuster I know for a fact that they aren't off the shelf and there was no email telling us to. The store I work at had one at 29.99$. I would suggest calling up a BB. Its 10 dollars more than most places but if you really want it I would suggest it.

Well, I didn't get as much of a response as I was led to believe existed here. Really surprising, as I thought I was doing something a lot of Xixaxers would appreciate (but thanks to those who did PM me with interest -- all two of you). So, I went ahead and put it on e-bay here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3384323375 Bidding starts at $24.99, which is more than fair. So anyone who's interested can place a bid there, but I'll still take PM offers up to a point (I'm not sure if I can cancel the auction if I have bids on the item).
I checked my local Borders last night, and no luck.
I also checked my local independent DVD store (who used to sell pre-released DVD's, but got busted), and no luck there either.

Quote from: LostEraserSo does anyone have any new news on this? I heard back in february that it might have just been delayed until April. Well, here we are...
latest new I heard was that Burton wasn't happy with the extras and that there were some copyright issues on the supplementary materials as well. It is indefinately delayed.
From the dvd.ign mailbag:
Where the hell is Ed Wood on DVD??? It was released, then retracted, then the date was set for April sometime, now it's April and I still cant get the movie. I've been waiting for this movie for awhile!!!
dvd.ign responds: A little bird has said October.
wait, this STILL hasn't been released? ha! i loves my region free player.
Me too. And the funniest thing is the R1 version won't differ a bit from the R2.
October, wow. What a fucking joke.
I watched Ed Wood again today in a film class I'm taking right now. I can't wait for the DVD now. I forgot how terrific Depp and Landau were in this film.

Think this time it will finally come out? Just announced is the third (or perhaps fourth?) new release date for the long-delayed Ed Wood. Tim Burton's critically-acclaimed ode to the Worst Director of All-Time is now set for an October 19th release. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround, extras include an audio commentary with Burton, actor Martin Landau, co-writers Scott Alexander & Larry Karaszewski, costume designer Colleen Atwood, and cinematographer Stefan Czapsky, deleted scenes, a music video, the theatrical trailer, and six featurettes: "Let's Shoot this F#$%@r!", "Making Bela," "Pie Plates Over Hollywood," "Theremin" and "When Carol Met Larry." Let's hope this time is the charm, and list price will be $29.95.
For anyone wondering, the cross dressing featurette "When Carol Met Larry" is absent on the new release. But it had nothing to do with the movie really, save Wood's crossdressing. Looks like I'll be keeping this one wrapped up...
