Title: Beaten with an ugly stick
Post by: Gamblour. on October 10, 2003, 03:00:16 PM
Ever paused your dvd player or taken a still that had someone looking completely horrendous? Well, here's one of a certain 24 star:

This can be the antithesis of the most beautifully composed shot thread.

I know what you mean.  It happens with porn all the time.  I won't post a picture though, outta respect to the virgin eyes.

speaking of porn, and on a similar note:  Ever notice how porn looks the same whether it's being fast-forwarded or rewound?  amazin' really.

The same thing happens when I do that with my Power Ranger tapes.

In all my fascination with porn and its influence, as I think, nearly everywhere in this culture, the Italian intellectual Umberto Eco offered up one of the few, true identities of the porno. He said that the porn is unique in that it always handles situations of non importance (driving in/out of driveways, buying something) longer than any other type of movie. Its not for any reason at all. Its just in its very cheesy drama, many scenes are separated by a long scene of something arbitary being done. The scenes of drama are also quite long in it being just two people talking. Little of course is really said to push the story further, but porn does extend normal life situations longer than any normal movie. Its just people can put up with it because sex is always around the corner.

Thank you. I shall look for it. I remember you posting portions of it a while back. Also to use Susan Sontag in promoting one of my hereos to you. Here's a quote by Susan Sontag for the critic Stanley Kauffmann:

"Stanley Kauffmann cares, valiantly, ardently, about movies. He is - doesn't everyone know this? - one of our national treasures."

This was used for his last book of criticism.

Now about this porno ugly stick thing.....the DVD has done wonders for getting through the dull parts like the beginning credits, etc. The old VHS would take way too long to fast fwd and switch to play to look for the good parts. And then it was only to find that you had to fast fwd even more b/c you didn't go far enough. It was a real downer..

The book that the quote was on was Regarding Film: Criticism and Comment. The comment was about the book, though. It was general.
