hi this is one of my first posts, but i have been lurking since the pta board.( i think i may have even posted a few messages back then)
this place used to be purely for information only (theres so much to learn here seriously) but now i guess ill start sharing my opinion on things.
anways,
what do you think is the best movie ever made? i mean if you had to pick one, and just one (not a list of your favorite movies). the movie that you think is the most well made ever even though it didnt really strike you personally and is not even one of your favorites.
mine is Ran by kurosawa (it is one of my favorites too)
although kurosawa is not my favorite director of all time, i think he is the best that ever lived.
Batman: The Movie or Citizen Kane
hmm, well, I propose to be the first of many: Magnolia. No contest.
But I think the best director who ever lived was Godard.
Whadda ya gonna do?
This thread is a bad Dejavu.
Best film ever would be Boogie Nights
No, it would be either Manhattan or Taxi Driver... but which?...
Taxi Driver
How's about Manhattan Taxi Driver: the story of a 42 year old taxi driver whose many neuroses and love affairs lead him to violently murder Diane Keaton.

Excellent!
Jack Black can play his wacky sidekick.
I hate when I have to pick just one. 8)
Strange, I just noticed the similarities in both movies:
in New York
underage love interest
regular love interest
neurotic man
doesn't succeed with the older one, so rushes off at the end to be with/save the younger one...
hmmmm
They were both made around the same time ALSO.

just one wacky sidekick? okay, well how about Jack Black AND Owen Wilson?
Since "best" is really a subjective term, I say "Plan 9 From Outer Space"
Yes, riding this subjectivity, my answer would have to be Manos Hands of Fate.... :P

Exactly. I often compare these movies. Not many tend to agree with me, but I always thought there were some similarities. But I think they all come from the the first point of your comparisons: New York... and the effects that living in a big city can do to a man.
Bringing Out The Dead
Mulholland. driVe..

That would be the best unintentional comedy ever.
Best movie ever....in terms of watching over and over again, I would have to say As Good As It Gets....but in terms of blowing my freaking mind away I would have to say Pulp Fiction
best director, i'd say Ingmar Bergman.
best movie, I could say Citizen Kane or Breathless if we want to talk influence.
but I think the best movie, in the terms of it having everything is Lawrence of Arabia.
best movie - vertigo
best director ever - probably orson welles, in the classic hollywood sense
Best movie - Probably Citizen Kane or maybe even The Godfather, though both are not absolute favorites
Best director - Alfred Hitchcock I'd say. I like David Lynch a lot too, but to say "best" would sound bad.
best movie ever made, Sunrise
Umberto D.

I don't think I'll be able to make this b/c I will be editing.
"SPECIAL EVENT

One of the greatest films of all time, Murnau's pioneering masterpiece tells the tale of a young farmer, who, smitten by a hussy from the city, decides to kill his wife but cannot when his conscience gets the better of him. The married couple's love is rekindled during a trip to the big city. Cinematheque proudly presents a newly restored print of this Academy Award-winner, complete with the first-ever restoration of the film's original Movietone soundtrack. This screening will be introduced by Schawn Belston (Director of Film Preservation at 20th Century Fox) and Michael Pogorzelski (Director of the Academy Film Archive), both of whom played vital roles in the restoration process."
Thank you for making me insanely jealous.. then again you aren't going. BUT it reminds me of a different missed opportunity. Last month Cal State Long Beach had a Widescreen Festival (an annual thing). John Bailey, who did the commentary for the Sunrise DVD - which I proudly own - was being honored and chose the films for the week-long festival. Lo and behold, Sunrise is on the list. I fucking couldn't go.
Hope you take the time off from editing to see it... who knows it may inspire you.[/list]
best film ever: 2001: a space odyssey
best director ever: stanley kubrick
...and believe me, i'm not totally obsessed with him. those two choices are somewhat coincidental.
Best film: underground most definetly, and the elephant man, citizen kane and Dersu Uzala as close seconds.
Best Director: Kusturica, without a doubt and bergman.
best way to bore me- reading 'best of' threads.
why doncha cry about it
Taxi Driver is overrated. Can't see how it's at the top of Tarantino's 'Best Films Ever'-list. Sorry. It's film of quality but I can't say I enjoyed that much.
I disagree with the people that say these kinds of threads are useless.
For instance, given the supposed demographic of xixax posters, we learn that people can just as easily be brainwashed by finicky art school hyperbole as they can be by corporate mass media.
You aren't safe anywhere, I guess.
Best Movie Ever Made....
hmmmm... i can't say it because i didn't watch all the movies ever made, but i can talk about movies i've watched:
and my vote goes to......
Seven Samurai
and the best filmmaker in my opinion (not forgetting i didn't watch all the movies of masters) is Akira Kurosawa the best of the filmmakers i ever watched
