words need not be spoken.
tru
i think adam mckay wrote this with will farrell. Mckay was the head writer on snl when farrell was there, and i heard he was the one who wrote most of will's best sketches.
This one is looking to be a classic.
Yeah, McKay was also a member of UCB before they got the show
Pretty much anything twisted and weird you've seen with Will Ferrel was written by Adam McKay
Isn't Jack Black in this too?
EDIT: yes, cameo, thx sloy
I've been excited about this ever since they first did a script review at AICN, before it was greenlit. It sounds like there's going to be loads of cameos in it...I think Jack Black is the only one that people know about so far. I really hope this is as absurdly brilliant as it probably will be.
is thier a trailer yet?
Release Date: Spring, 2004 (wide)
Cast: Will Ferrell (Ron Burgundy), Christina Applegate (Veronica Corningstone), Steve Carrell (Brick Tamland), Kevin Corrigan (Paul Hauser), Chuck D, David Koechner (Champ Kind), Chris Parnell (Garth Holliday), Paul Rudd (Brian Fantana), Maya Rudolph (Deedra X), Vince Vaughn (Wes Mantooth), Fred Willard (Ed Harken), Dave Allen, Jack Black (cameo), Chad Everett (Jess Moondragon), Kathryn Hahn (Helen), Jay Johnston, Justin Long (Chris Harken), Tara Subkoff (Sandra), Paul F. Tompkins, Chris Williams (Rashad Harris).
Director: Adam McKay (feature film debut; he previously directed a series of short films for the 2000-2001 season of "Saturday Night Live")
Screenwriter: Adam McKay (feature debut; "Saturday Night Live" writing staff, 1995 to 2001), Will Ferrell (cowriter of A Night at the Roxbury) (they've also got August Blowout in development).
Premise: Set in 1970s San Diego, this is the story of local TV anchorman Ron Burgundy (Ferrell), god's gift to the ladies and the area's most respected reader of the teleprompter of the news fit to be known, who finds his position challenged by an ambitious female newscaster (Applegate) who, unlike Ron, actually knows something about journalism.
Here's how DreamWorks puts it:
"[Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is] the top-rated anchorman in San Diego in the '70s. When feminism marches into the newsroom in the form of ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone (Applegate), Ron is willing to play along at first-as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it's more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor-persons...it's war."
Quote from: stuart braithwaiteQuote from: Bankyis thier a trailer yet?
yes, in dorkborkjj's ass.
what the hell does that mean?
I guess Ferrell and McKay had one hell of a time writing those character names. McKay wrote and directed quite a few short films for SNL.. One was the Neil Armstrong one where he keeps watching old tapes of himself and howling to the moon. Another took place in some shitty convenience store, one featured a dog chasing Ferrell or Parnell.. can't remember.. and the dog leaped over a balcony ontop of him. Another was some crazy German ordering a baby to not crackle the chip bag. Ferrell was shouting "ONE, TWO, THREE - GROW UP!!" to make him older and not so infantile.. McKay is a very funny writer and combined with Ferrell, this is just going be one of the funniest of recent comedies. Carrell will once again be hilarious as he always is.. but I don't think he'll be stealing the show this time around.. we shall see.
Anchorman Clip Premiering on New Official Site!
On the heels of the success of the comedy Elf, starring Will Ferrell, DreamWorks Pictures is premiering a specially selected clip from Ferrell's next feature film comedy, Anchorman, on the film's new official website!
Opening nationwide on July 9, 2004, Anchorman stars Ferrell as Ron Burgundy, San Diego's top-rated anchorman in the 1970s. Christina Applegate stars opposite Ferrell as ambitious newswoman Veronica Corningstone. When Veronica joins Ron's news team, he is willing to play along at first -- as long as Veronica stays in her place, covering cat fashion shows, cooking, and other "female" interests. But when Veronica refuses to settle for being eye candy and steps behind the news desk, it's more than a battle between two perfectly coiffed anchor- persons...it's war.
Will Ferrell co-wrote the screenplay for Anchorman with Adam McKay, former Saturday Night Live head writer and founder of the Upright Citizen's Brigade comedy troupe. McKay is also making his directorial debut on Anchorman.
Stay tuned to the official website (http://www.anchorman-themovie.com/)for when the clip goes online.

Damn that looks funny. The period details/style look note perfect, too.
will ferrell can do no wrong
you know how much bank he is going to make per film after the success of ELF
This might be a bold but i think that he is the funniest member of SNL aulumni
QuoteThis might be a bold but i think that he is the funniest member of SNL aulumni
I agree
i think what makes that true is that he could take skits that are terribly bad and unfunny and turn them into something worth watching
Amen. The only man he had to surpass for this title was Phil Hartman and it's clear he has. Hartman's Best of SNL DVD would never reduce a majority crowd to tears laughing. His character is too charming. Ferrell is just plain funny.
Those clips are awesome. It looks like Will's character is sort of similar to the crazy doctor that he did in that one SNL sketch. "Son of a vondruke!"
He can reduce me to hysterics with just his delivery of a line (I love the way he says "clinging to LIIIIIIFE" in this clip) or a facial expression (check out the Action News intro when he and the other guys stop what they're doing and all turn to camera simultaneously. Hilarious). And did anyone notice Ian Roberts from the Upright Citizens Brigade as the guy giving the countdown? Ian Roberts, Amy Poehler, and Matt Besser all have roles in this movie. If Walsh is in it too it'll be a UCB reunion!
Yes, I did notice Ian Roberts of the Upright Citizens Brigade who has a season 1 DVD out now, that was really cool considering everything else you said about Amy Poehler of the Upright Citizens Brigade and also Matt Besser of the Upright Citizens Brigade. Maybe Matt Walsh of the Upright Citizens Brigade was busy on the set of the new Starsky and Hutch movie to be in this one.
Quote from: FishbulbI love the way he says "clinging to LIIIIIIFE" in this clip
That one reminded me of his James Lipton.
Official Trailer here. (http://www.anchorman-themovie.com/)
this is going to be hilarious. i guess the new key to funny is 'put them in the seventies; when things were ridiculous!' between this and Starsky and Hutch, i dont know which i want to see more.
Well I definitely want to see this more, the cast is fucking great
I heard that it might get PG13 now?
Quote from: SlorgI heard that it might get PG13 now?
As long as it doesn't compromise it too much, I'm fine with this. There are lots of good comedies not rated R, right?
Wasn't overly impressed with the trailer, was hoping for a few more belly aching laughs, and (trailer SPOILERS follow) the trailer-"punch line" with Burgundy walking into the cabinet, is exactly like Buddy getting hit by the car in Elf. I really hope this isn't a sign of the great Ferrell starting to repeat himself already. Don't think so though, and still have big hopes for this. May the retro comedies trend never stop!
The rhythm of this title keeps making me want to read this as "Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy." I don't think it's a coincidence, either.
I have a feeling this movie might kind of be in trouble. I've heard that the entire ending had to be reshot, the last 45 minutes of the movie. Apparently the test audiences reacted negatively to the original ending (which involved a gang of criminals called "The Alarm Clock Gang", played by Maya Rudolph, Kevin Corrigan, Chuck D, and Justin Long). As a result Rudolph and the others have now been cut entirely out of the movie.
The last time I can remember something like this happening was with the Kids in the Hall movie "Brain Candy", and the end result still turned out OK. But I feel like I trust Will Ferrell and Adam McKay more than I do a bunch of random people in a test audience to decide what's funny. I hope some of this excised material shows up in some form eventually, on the DVD maybe. (There's a ton of cut stuff from "Brain Candy" which has really never been seen anywhere).

Mallrats too, but that cut stuff really did suck for the most part.
I remember that the trailer for Brain Candy had more footage that got cut than footage that made the final film. But who knows? It turned out to be one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
If Anchorman turns out half as well as Brain Candy, I'll be quite satisfied... as long as that cut footage makes it to the DVD. Maya Rudolph, Kevin Corrigan and Chuck D together? Genius.

Steve Carell looks hilarious
His face already cracks me up... he doesnt have to move or say anything... He can be serious and I just start laughing... this guy is the best
With Bruce Almighty and now this movie, people are soon going to find out that Steve Carell can steal a movie from anyone.
This will be our generation's Network.
There's a spelling mistake on the title of this thread.
EDIT: Voila, now there isn't.
Comingsoon reported that this movie received an R rating from the MPAA for "some sex-related humor". I bet that Dreamworks will probably resubmit the movie and try to get a PG-13. "Fifty First Dates" got an R rating originally too, I think for all the Sean Astin wet dream jokes.

Awesome. I cannot wait for this! Judd Apatow from Freaks and Geeks a producer and David O. Russel an executive producer....
I hope everyone got to see the full trailer. Dreamworks' site is really slow for some reason, but it's worth the download. Just the shot of Will Ferrell with a full beard, near tears, is enough to make me laugh. And "Knights of Columbus, that hurts!" Haha....classic Will.

i realize i'm responding to an old post, but i just saw brain candy and now it all makes perfect sense. i thought the first half of that movie was really really funny. then it got kind of funny. then it went to seriously unfunny. a lot like their sketches. does anybody else find their sketches to end on a sour note?

Yes it will.
you guys....it's good...
it's pretty good. all the cameos stole the film SPOLIERSwhen jack black punts the dog off of the bridge, i was in total shock, it was hilarious....the battle scene was funny. and surprisingly, i laughed at ben stiller/SPOILERS
im not saying its bad, but you cant even compare it to network -- comedy vs. drama.
this will be a modern day "fletch" at best.
I liked it alot and it had some fantastic cameos but some (actually most) of the humor, it seemed to go for the "so stupid it's funny" goal. Which is fine by me.
I feel like this is blasphemy, being obsessed with Will the way I am, but it actually wasn't quite as funny as I thought it would be....I laughed uproariously at quite a bit, and I still loved it and will see it again, but I'm wondering if there was maybe too much plot. Also, I didn't think the cameos (other than JB and TR) were as funny as they could have been. Everything with Will Ferrell and the dog had me dying with laughter, though, and the dog talking to the bears was brilliant. I keep thinking about the brilliant last bit at the end of the credits, the clearly improvised scene that is just so hysterical, and it made me think that the 'sequel' that they'll be putting out on DVD might even be funnier than this movie.
Quote from: Ghostboythe dog talking to the bears was brilliant.

classic
just saw it tonight, and about 3/4 of the trailer isn't even in the movie...should make for quite the dvd.

Quote from: abuck1220just saw it tonight, and about 3/4 of the trailer isn't even in the movie.
yeah i hate when movies do that. but this movie was pretty damn funny. the thing i thought was interesting was even in most wacky comedies they are supposed to resemble somewhat real life on planet earth but this movie clearly had no interest in that. either because of a concious choice by the director, (or his inexperience) he didnt reign in any of hte supporting characters performances and as you can see, pretty much let everyone run as wild as possible regardless of how far it strayed from resembling anything near reality. the only concern was just : is it funny? and if it was, it went in. which made for a pretty ridiculous film that seemed like a bunch of sketches strung together than an actual movie that had an interest in telling a story with a plot, etc. but maybe thats good? it was sort of like the comedy equivalent of charlies angels full throttle was to an action comedy. so, its either bad storytelling or some form of new cinema depending on how you want to look at it.
it was funny as hell though, and besides applegate who wasnt given much to do, everyone in the movie was pretty funny.
SPOILER if they had switched tim robbins with owen wilson it would've had the whole new comedy dream team in the same film! they always seem to be one or two away
END SPOILER
I laughed so much during this movie. Hysterical stuff. Will Ferrell does a great stilted performance. He talks off-camera as if he was in front of the TV camera. He looked perfect in that mustache and hair.
I liked that the film never veered into the standard "take this seriously" moments that many comedies do. We are never more than a few seconds away from a joke, and even the scenes after SPOILER Jack Black kicks Baxter off the bridge and after Ron is firedEND SPOILER were played for laughs.
The male news reporters here are portrayed as buffoons, and the jabs at the business of TV news reporting as vapid are not inaccurate, with the Panda Watch and cat fashion show, as well as the reliance on the TelePrompter. Steve Carell steals most of his scenes.
This movie is The Balls.
My favorite part was the the cameos by BR and SF during the credits. Genius.
Can someone please tell me what SPOILER Rudd's balls were named?END SPOILER The audience was laughing so hard at SPOILERThe OctagonEND SPOILER that I couldn't hear.
I know this doesn't help much, but one was named after his roommate in college, so I hear.
I don't think there's ever been a movie so overexposed that it completely made me not want to watch it. Except Anchorman.
Every time I turn on the TV there's Will Ferrell in a mustache saying corny lines. The LAST thing I want to do is sit through 2 hours of this on purpose. I'll wait to rent it... maybe.

I'll 2nd that. It seems the latest trend is to dress people up in funny clothes and rely on that for 90 mins.

That's exactly my choice of words for describing all the damn Anchorman promos. It's annoyed the crap out of me so
of course I'm not going to see the movie.
My opinion isn't about the movie itself, but that I'm completely turned off on this movie.
i don't think this has been mentioned........if it has just let this post be
i was watching the Biography on Son of Sam on A&E and at the end they had a fake Bio about Anchorman......i'm not kidding........it's hard for me to imagine what the promotional team was doing when they thought........"hmmm......let's make a fake 5 min. Bio for Anchorman and air it on A&E".........it was edited and even had music just like a regular Bio.........crazeee.............and i'm not even sure they mentioned the movie
the guy who nararrates Anchorman is the same guy who nararrates Biography.

I just came back from the movie. But I didn't get to see the ending when SPOILER Baxter comes back and starts talking to the bears. The projector was too low, so the subtitles were cut-off. So everyone was watching a dog and a bear bark and roar at each other for like 45 seconds. I did get my money back though.END SPOILER
I liked the movie. It was a little slow in the beginning but after that I couldn't stop laughing. Steven Carell stole the show, and I wish Fred Armisen had a bigger role. That guy is awesome.

seeing the movie wouldn't change my assumptions, but it could prove them to be wrong.
i laughed a lot during this movie, and i want to see it again. that being said, i still dont think its one of the better comedies i've seen. while it has great laughs, there are a lot of gags that just dont pay off. it just didnt seem like the comedy magic was happening (i dont think its been happening too much this year actually) and i dont think there was much comedic chemistry between any of the actors. ron burgundy and brick are hilarious but no one else even came close to making me laugh and when they were supposed to make me laugh it made the movie kind of uncomfortable. will ferrel is always funny, but when he gets a really good script (jay and silent bob) and the movie clicks, he is the funniest person alive
Quote from: Ghostboy...and it made me think that the 'sequel' that they'll be putting out on DVD might even be funnier than this movie.
Quote from: The Digital BitsWe've got some interesting news today on upcoming DVDs thanks to Video Store magazine. The latest issue is reporting that DreamWorks' Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy may arrive on DVD (later this year or early next) in two versions. Director Adam McKay believes there will be a single-disc movie only release, followed by a 2-disc special edition. Reportedly, the original cut of the film was over 4 hours long, so McKay is using the extra footage to make an entire second film, set to be called Wake Up, Ron Burgundy, that will clock in at an hour and forty minutes. Look for that to be included on the more elaborate edition.
did anyone else notice the freaks and geeks cameos? "seth" was the camera guy and Mr. Russo the guidence counselor was out of focus in the background during the date.
Word... I DID notice that...
Seth was easy to spot, but I'm surprised I noticed the guidance councilor back there... I wonder if he was in it more and got cut?
Universal has announced Anchorman which stars Will Ferrell alongside Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd and Steve Carell. The hit comedy will be available to own in numerous editions from the 28th December. Firstly, there will be an extended edition of the film, which will introduce around ten minutes of additional footage. Details on extra material have yet to be released, but that the disc will include a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer along with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and French Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround tracks. A giftset will also be available from the same day. This will include the extended edition of the film, along with another feature length film entitled Wake Up Ron Burgundy. A Ron Burgundy's Month to View Journal will also be included. The retail price for this one has yet to be determined. Finally, the theatrical cut of the film will be available too - although this will only be available in full frame.
