Title: mtv vma's
Post by: ©brad on August 28, 2003, 10:17:46 PM
first off, i don't care what anybody says, the opening w/ madonna and the other 2 was classic. sumone pleaz post a pic. daaaaaaaaaamn.

chris rock had an alright opening sketch, but the rest was lame, as was the rest of the show. its like 'ok, we got 15 different awards, with the same 5 groups nominated for each. which one of them is going to get the next one?" lame.

the opening thing was nice though.

Oh yea, I didn't watch this...MTV has just bored me lately. I would love to see Madonna though. She looked great in that last Gap commercial she did. That song fucking rules too. I've always loved that song.

Anyway, I might catch this in one of the million inevitable reruns. The ads for it were just so lame and unfunny...especially the 50 Cent one. And I think Chris Rock is a pretty damn funny guy too, I expected better. All the recent and older ads for the award shows have been hilarious.

Missy Elliot lost best female video. That pissed me off.  :x At least she won everything else.  Also, Johnny Cash never showed up but apparently he's in the hospital.

BTW I always suspected Jimmy Fallon was gay.

Quote from: gwaihow cool of fred durst to give the finger to camera. how proud he must be.
fred durst is a dick, it's not more complicated than that. he made the blossoming yout of americas guitarists come and audition and make then sign whatever they would play would belong to limp bisquit. that's fucking power abuse.

What garbage was that?

Anytime Justin Timberlake and Linkin Park win over Johnny Cash and the White Stripes it automatically discredits the "awards" show, "music" network, and the world in general.

Today's music sucks.

You'll have to see it to really get the effect of how their award was rushed. They came out with Agfa Lavine and Kelly Osbourne, did their stupid banter about how DD never won an award and started showing clips from their videos. Then, they spring a 'surprise' on DD, with Kelly telling them here are your awards while some guy comes out and passes out awards to the members, who seem actually surprised, and had no idea. But because of that surprise MTV did, it seemed to undermine the validity and respect of DD's achievement. It seemed more of a make-up award rather than taking the time to do a carrer timeline of DD. The audience seemed bored and didn't care what was going on. Kelly told them to stand up. Simon LeBon gave his thanks, then it was on to the next award.

yeah, they do suck. but i loved when they trashed their instruments. and that goes also to other bands who also performed at the vma's like nirvana, the vines and rage against the machine.
I think they were trying hard to get the Nirvana connection across, considering they had cheerleaders in the same outfits as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" in the cages.

tever fyags, this years awards were the best in ages. mainly cos of madonna and her sluts, chris rock's opening monologue, and the comments he made after the performances..

other highlights and gripes: duran duran thing was like a joke, avril lavigne is starving, eminem is cool, outkast rock the hizzouse, sandler was funny in the end with snoop - whole conversation in izzle was great, chris rock nodding all the time was kinda wack, beyonce SHAKING HER ASS LIKE IT AIN'T NO THING was a definite ekzellent point.. lemme say DAYUM! to that. evanescence need to shut the eff up and accept their one-hit wonder death. that dude who directed the linkin park video has a really small head like physically or his shoulders are too wide. haha oh i just remembered, KELLY CLARKSON ok she's a joke to begin with but when she presented with ludacris and repeated what he said "yyeeah" and then giggled like a slut and said "hee hee i'm so white" u could see how embarrassed ludacris was to be up there with her.

that's about it, oh and for the first time in years a deserving video won. the whole show was constantly and openly aware of how it feeds off black culture to survive.

..i have not seen it but will rather catch up on one of the countless re-runs of it.. But from seeing many throughout my life i can  imagine what it was like.

i want to coment on good Charlotte..i am so glad most agree they suck!!!!!!!if you are over 14 ..and listen to them   please realize NOW that what you are listening to is garbage and most people will laugh at you for it.  do yourself a favor and give the cd to green day fans longing  for generic pop-punk..b/c years later you will look back and feel like an idiot for liking them..

as for.. evervesence or whatever they are called i agree w/  P in that they need to understand that  it's 13mins 48secs. into their 15 mins.. time is running out.  i suggest for them to seel-out in every way possible (commercials, clothing line, acting.. er...reciting lines in front of a camera in  dissullushioned teen flicks, muliple appearences on TRL so the kids who actually attend those shows will keep their faces in mind)  ....IMO the girl has a good voice it's just the music is cheesy ..they seem to try and be serious but when you think about it  and lok at that video w/ that fake loking male singer singing the "save me!" part you cannot help but feel sorry for her b/c when you play that musical angle of  "female singer w/ an male backing group" you will not suceed artistically and all the money you make from "selling" this to serious music fans you shouild feel guilty that you will never be respected by peers/audiences...for example look at the group garbage.

linkin park.....lol...........i tried yo like them ..it's like when you first here one of their songs its starts out  alright then once you think you might like it the guy starts rapping gand it all goes down hill from there.. they need to take the money and run...

i agree w/ the duran duran thing.. i did not see it though ..But the way it's being described it does sound bad.....

Everything that P said is correct... fuck the actual awards though... Coldplay is cool... I wish Timberlin (Timberland?) had better friends because he's pretty dope... Jack Black's Micheal Jackson thing was kinda funny... Britney Spears should have gone back in time and brought back a Madonna that was hot to make out with- that would have been better.

No, P's wrong.

The awards blew this year. And I'm not using "blew" in the conventional sense. I'm applying "blew" within the context of normal MTV Awards shows.

The only reason I watched was to see Coldplay. And even though I enjoyed them, the rest was sooooo not worth it. Unless you like your ears and eyes to bleed.

i was kinda disappointed w/ the performances, esp. 50 cent, which was embarrassingly sluggish. even snoop couldn't salvage it.

thing about rap performances is that they always have 40 ppl on the stage w/ them. a ballsy performance would be to go out there by urself, like eminem.

Chris rock after Good Charlotte's performance: "Good Charlotte? More like a mediocre Green Day"

Ahaha priceless.

Other good jokes of his~

On seating arrangements: "See the Olsen twins are down there... which is why R.Kelly is all the way up there."

On American Idol: "Asking Paula Abdul to judge a singing contest is like asking Christopher Reeve to judge a dancing contest."

Anyway the fact that Cash lost to Timberlake in the Best Male Video catagory was a letdown, but the fact that he lost Video of the Year to Missy freaking Elliot was a travesty.

Ugh the Cash video was pure art. Missy and Timberlake have to rely on special effects and dance routines.

On GC's performance: Well it sucked. And ruining your instruments is so dumb. "Hee look at us! We are sooooo angry. Let's destroy thousands of dollars of equipment because we are repressed angry rockers!" Lame.

Beyonce is a horrid lip syncher.

The opening performance was kinda cool. Christina is so ugly though.

Ahh what else...

Let me just copy and paste a few things I said from another board.

First of all "In Da Club" was just like every other rap video.

Girls dancing. More girls dancing. The end.

At least the Cash video was thought provoking and moving. You could hear the pain in his voice and he sang with such passion.

I have appreciation for some rap music but a guy singing about being in a club, and having sex, and then having a bunch of scantily clad women dancing around him isn't original. There are tons of rap songs/videos like that.

The end. :)

ok here is my two or should i say 50 cents on the awards

madonna britney and christina A MASTERPEICE

And  cute girls who work at the mall have been toying with bi sexuality for a while now , at bars and at partys and to make their boyfriends happy they tell them bi fantasy stories or go to strip clubs and get dances
and this britney maddona thing will now make it offical that it should be manditory that all cute girls fuck one another

chris rocks jokes were great that reuban from american idol joke nearlly made me pass out " eat a salad" dear lord was that funny , but his delivery was off and some of his jokes ( you can tell the ones other people wrote for him) were dated " mtv is so old that it now watchs vh1"
first of all vh1 quit being the micheal bolton network  years ago and now they have out done mtv, they had a whole show about great ass's i swear it was called booty call and they had a panel talk about great butts , how cool is that, and i love the 80's wasnt that the best show, so chris was hit and miss and he looked like he was less confident then his first time, his second time was crap, the second time he hosted he wasnt funny he was just being rude and not funny and rude like he was the first time

so chris rock as a host
First time 10
second time 0
third time 5 and a half

but saying "See the Olsen twins are down there... which is why R.Kelly is all the way up there" is a masterpeice, its just he looked rushed and distracted

ok what else anyone saying that justin timberlake is a idiot, is one themselves " cry me a river" is a masterpeice written by one of the best producers ever timberland, dont know his work look up a song called Pony by ginuine

and 50 cent earned every award and should of won more, this is his year this is his world, maybe next year he will be dead or worse making a cheesy album like  " 50 cent presents " a compilation of all my friends who eminem wont sign"

remember snoop and the eastsiders

its 2003 were not in duran duran mode wrong year to give them their due, but the record company wanted to hype their comeback, but the world is like " so what" just like the lollapaloser tour which died a quick death

missy should not have won that was justins award

and maybe they should of hurried up and did a tribute to johhny cash who couldnt make it, chris at one point said he had to stretch

well anyways people who say they hate mtv, im gonna try and be nice and say go right ahead and diss it they dont care or need you

but to prove my point about how p.r people tell celebs what bands to name drop to look cool

who did justin timberlake say was his favorite band ......... coldplay

was he full of shit yes, but just as full of shit as that college kid who lets his professer ( a failed artist in their own write because those who cant do teach) tell him what to say is cool

and last but not least beyonce somebody has to teach her what the concept of lip synching is all about when i wasnt looking at her ass and she would turn around her voice was singing her lips were not moving

????????????

she is into ventriloquism who knew wow  could she be the next willie tyler and lester of her ganeration ,  Fuck ???? that is one bad ass party trick

the metalica bit was ::yawns:: and good charlete winning was a joke someone tampered with something and edited the real votes , picolos do you work for mtv, their song reminds me of some sort of teen movie anthem, who would vote for them and are they really that good or just mearlly better then ezra but less then jake

He's an idiot cause he tries so hard to be cool it becomes funny. Like, "Whaz up y'all up there ?" or "I wish I was a black man y'all !" or "Hee Hee I'm so white". Ok, that was not him, but still.

What the hell ... he should have gotten more awards because he might get shot ? Shit, let's start giving awards to Yaser Arafat asap ! He's definietly the best singer, since next year he might be dead too. Did you see that video where 50 cents is in a hack of GTA3 ? It might be the worst piece of shit video ever. And his "songs" ... don't even want to comment them.

without offending jeremy blackman and his p.c anti american leanings , can we all get together as a group and pray yaser arrfat gets shot and killed today and his award will be me pisssing on his grave

and that was not my point, that song deserved to win it is in fact the biggest song of 2003 and great, and sadlly like biggie and pac we may lose him but death is not enough to give a award or warren zevon would of been given his lifetime acheivment award by somebody while he can still enjoy it

Britney would not kiss another woman besides Madonna

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A gum-smacking Britney Spears told CNN Wednesday that she has never before kissed a woman and never would again -- unless the woman is Madonna.

The pop star exchanged a prolonged, open-mouth kiss with the Material Girl during MTV's Music Video Awards show last week.

"I didn't know it was going to be that long and everything," said Spears.

She said the singers had played around during rehearsal and Madonna had told her they would "just feel it out and see what happens" during the performance.

"I've never kissed a woman before," Spears said demurely.

When asked if she would "do it again," she squealed, "No, I would not do it," but then added, "Maybe with Madonna."

When asked about how her image has changed from when she was a squeaky clean Mouseketeers, Spears said, "I think I'm still clean living. I mean I don't go home and have orgies or anything like that."

The singer said she is just "performing and expressing myself." She also believes that by fulfilling her own dreams and having fun doing it, she is inspiring her fans.

Spears said would love to make another movie or a musical, but she is focusing on her music right now.

Spears avoided the political pot hole that other entertainers have fallen into when she was asked about whether she supported the war in Iraq.

"Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that," she said.

She said she trusted President Bush but said she didn't know if he would get re-elected to the White House.

However, the singer would love to move to another country. She may follow Madonna's lead and take up residence in London.

"It's the one place that I feel completely anonymous. And I just like the way they treasure everything. Everything is very simply done," she explained. "The milkman still comes to the door. And Iike the simplicity of that."

However much she would like to avoid cameras following her everywhere, she said she really enjoys the reality TV shows.

When asked what else she watched, she said, "Oh CNN – all the time, all the time."

POSTSCRIPT TO A KISS

By J. Max Robins
Madonna's serial smooches with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards show left Aguilera begging for more — airtime that is. According to MTV sources, reps for Aguilera attempted to pressure the network to re-edit the steamy "Like a Virgin" segment from the show so that in its infinite rebroadcasts the camera would linger longer on the Madonna-Aguilera liplock.

"In most of the coverage, the whole thing was referred to as the Madonna-Britney kiss, with [Aguilera] mentioned in the whole thing as almost an afterthought," says an MTV insider. "So we got the inevitable call, and, of course, didn't do anything about it."

The 10.7-million viewers who watched this year's MTV Awards didn't match last year's record 12 million, even with the girl-on-girl tongue-wrestling opener. However, the VMAs scored its highest rating ever among women 18-49, sort of the span of the Britney, Christina, and Madonna demographic.

wow, get this.  the whole Duran Duran debacle.  where the video didnt play?  and some dude handed them their awards?  and kelly TOLD everyone to stand up?  its ALL GONE.

on the re-broadcast that they are going to show from now till forever of the awards, they actually cut to the VIDEO MONTAGE with the sounds like they were supposed to, and when it ends its the audience standing up on their own and them with their awards saying "thank you".  unbelievable.

but not really, considering they did the same thing to the triumph/eminem thing last year.

MTV moves video awards to Miami

MTV will this year hold its 21st Video Music Awards in Miami for the first time, on 29 August.

The awards will be held at the American Airlines Arena, the cable television network said on Friday.

In recent years, either LA or New York has hosted the event, which celebrates the year's best music videos.

An awards executive explained:"There were very, very limited venue possibilities in New York because of the Republican National Convention."

I have to say, Toxic is actually a pretty good song.

Won't make me go buy the CD, but as for pop, I like the beats.  They're getting slightly more inventive.

I'm with you.

I'm lost as to how they can have a Best Hip Hop video, Best Rap video and Best R&B video (like they're any different) but for rock, the choices are: Jet, The Darkness, Hoobastank , Evanescence, and Linkin Park.

Then they have categories like Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction and Best Editing...no one who watches MTV knows a damn thing about any of that.  (If they did, they probably wouldn't watch MTV as much)

I am serious. I hate MTV. It champions mediocrity in place of talent. The visual aspect has diluted the talent at the top of the charts by long margin. MTV is pretty much responsible for putting the emphasis on the visual aspect of marketing rather than the actual aural qualities. Bands that actually deserve to be on top but that don't necessarily fit a demographic marketing scheme can't make it.

I mean if it weren't for the whole art-rock becoming mainstream at the moment you would never have Franz Ferdinand or Modest Mouse get airplay. There was a point in which MTV was good too. It's hard to trace it's demise but I would gander at around 1995.

this was truly the worst year ever.  way to lipsynch more-obviously than britney spears, usher.  was it just me, or was like 90% of the show hip-hop oriented?  a million cutaways to Jay-Z, check.  having almost all musical performances be hip-hop, ch--- wait a sec.  we accidentally booked these three cheesy rock bands.  hmmm... lets just lump them all together and give them 2 minutes a piece to play part of each of one of their songs.  that way nelly and usher and every other act there can play like 3 or 4 songs into a sweet medley.  GOOD THINKING.  it doesnt matter that they couldnt be less similar.  and what the fuck were the polyphonic spree doing there?  like, mtv has ever played a video of theirs?  seriously whose brainstorm was that?

when did i get so old?

Guys, seriously, stop knocking mtv... It gets a bad rap.  I mean, so you don't like hip hop... are you racist?  Jay Z is a modern poet.  As is Britney.  Regardless of what you think about her music (it's all the producers, don't blame her), she has a fantastic voice. and don't give me the line about her being auto-tuned-- those pipes are all hers.  And the Toxic video reminds me of Mark Romanek's early work with Madonna-- brilliant stuff.

I hate the art-rock stuff though, Modest Mouse is alright, but Franz Ferdinand doesn't have an ounce of talent or hope.  And Outkast is overrated...

Quote from: Film StudentAs is Britney.
Are you sure?

"Everytime"
lyrics by Britney Spears

Notice me
Take my hand
Why are we
Strangers when
Our love is strong
Why carry on without me?

Everytime I try to fly
I fall without my wings
I feel so small
I guess I need you baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, it's haunting me
I guess I need you baby

I make believe
That you are here
It's the only way
I see clear
What have I done
You seem to move on easy

And everytime I try to fly
I fall without my wings
I feel so small
I guess I need you baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you're haunting me
I guess I need you baby

I may have made it rain
Please forgive me
My weakness caused you pain
And this song is my sorry

Ohhhh

At night I pray
That soon your face
Will fade away

And everytime I try to fly
I fall without my wings
I feel so small
I guess I need you baby
And everytime I see you in my dreams
I see your face, you're haunting me
I guess I need you baby

Well first off hip-hop isn't just black people? I see tons of white kids embrace the hip-hop culture. Sorry I don't listen to spoken word poetry nor do I enjoy talking in rhythym to a sample of someone else's music. If britney spears weight 250 lbs, do you think she'd be where she is? Of course not. As I stated, MTV has led the movement of emphasis on visual "talent' vs. musical talent. I wasn't saying that I liked the art rock movement, but it was a more avant-garde genre.

So you're a fan of Pimp My Ride, Room Raiders, Punk'd and Wanna Come In? That's my gripe with MTV. They used to show videos, and without screaming 13 year olds giving shout-outs over them and introduced by VJs with real names.

Quote from: Film StudentAnd the Toxic video reminds me of Mark Romanek's early work with Madonna-- brilliant stuff.

It reminds me of someone who watches too much Alias and made a demo reel to apply to direct an episode of the show. Joseph Kahn (director of Torque) is no where near the talent Romanek (writer/director of One Hour Photo) is.
