Title: Libertines
Post by: SoNowThen on August 27, 2003, 10:22:38 AM
Didn't know anything about them until the frontman went insane from his crack and heroin habit and broke into the other musician's house...

then I said, better check these kids out.

So anybody listen to them? I'm gonna go buy the album Up The Bracket.
Seems like they just released a new single called Don't Look Back Into The Sun. Now, is this a stand-alone single, or is it supposed to be included on an up and coming album???

yeah its a really good album.  i saw them (sans pete) in washington dc about a month ago.  (the single is a stand alone, crazy brits!)  you should download the single version of I Get Along, i prefer it to the one on the album.  its a little less straight ahead, and bit slower.  it grooves more.  i'd like to see them again, but the FULL band.

so is Carl the singer then?

'cause I was under the impression that Pete did a lot of the singing...

yeah, so, the single for I Get Along (which has Don't Look Back... as a b-side), it's different? If so, I'm buying it tomorrow.

I'm jealous that you got to see them...

hmm.... i'm not sure.  i thought pete was the "main" frontman, but they were like a lennon/mccartney thing with songwriting.  although, i could be wrong.  yeah, carl sang all the songs and a guitar tech played in place of pete i guess.  so, not the full experience, but pretty rockin.  the drummer is really good.
umm i dont know if its the different version or not on the single.  i know that before "up the bracket" came out, their debut single was the double a side with What A Waster/I Get Along on it.   i dont know if it even came out on cd, because the sound quality on the downloads i have from a long time ago is pretty primitive, i think the versions of those floating around were transfered from vinyl.  but thats just a guess i really have no idea.  you should definitely look into it though.

Not sure what to make about all the Clash references being tossed at The Libertines, because, god love them, The Clash never had this much fun.  Up The Bracket is 'alternative' music in the age of 'so-called alternative'.  I recommend this slab to anyone who likes to smell whiskey and cigarette smoke when they listen.  Please buy it.

I've had this album since March 03 and I love it!

Morrissey (http://xixax.com/viewtopic.php?t=960) is "curating" this year's Meltdown Festival (http://www.morrisseymusic.com/meltdown_pressrelease.html). Some of the things he's lined up:

Channel 4 teletext (Planet Sound P351) give over three pages to Morrissey after bumping into him at a gig in London. He granted them a brief interview, and according to them:
- He will play at Glastonbury and the Carling Festival
- Guests for the Meltdown Festival will include Franz Ferdinand, the Libertines and Alan Bennett. The remaining New York Dolls will also reform for the first time since 1977 to play Meltdown.

Pete's got another side project thing going on, in April he releases "For Lovers" with Wolfman.

You can listen to it at the nme website.

It's a great, pop love tune. Reminds me of the best early Oasis!!!

The Libs are getting bigger everyday. Can't wait 'til I move to England this summer and get to actually see them live...

Libertines mentioned again on morrissey-solo.com (http://www.morrissey-solo.com):

Morrissey is enjoying something of a second coming of late, with bands including The Libertines[/i] and Franz Ferdinand declaring him a huge influence. With british music on the rise and his old band The Smiths recently crowned the most influential of all time by NME, the record will be released in a feverish atmosphere.

It's not the first time I start to like a band and discover Morrissey is an influence. I like when my tastes connect like that.

At one point I tried to relate every movie I love to David Lynch and I could. But that's a whole other story.

CLASH'S MICK JONES DECLARES NEW LIBERTINES ALBUM "SENSATIONAL"
Source: NME

CLASH guitarist and current LIBERTINES co-producer MICK JONES has declared the forthcoming album "sensational", and has even drawn comparisons between the band and his own legendary outfit.

Jones has been working alongside The Clash and Sex Pistols producer Bill Price with the tempestuous band in a west London studio, and says that the band's frictions are exaggerated.

"[It's been] Beautiful, and don't let anyone tell you differently," he said to Teletext. "If it was as stupid as people are making out - security guards to stop them fighting and that crap - do you think I'd be mug enough to stick around and put up with it?

"They've grown up. What happened with Pete (Doherty) going to prison was a horrible time, it could have finished any band. They know that, and it's made them realise how much they love each other.

"People say that me and Joe (Strummer) were both the best of friends and the best of rivals." He explained, "I don't agree - we never had time to be rivals!

"Pete and Carl (Barat) have the same fluidity we had. Joe would sit at a typewriter, have a great lyric by the time I'd had a coffee and I'd knock up a tune for it in a few minutes. That's how quickly The Libs do it - low boredom threshold."

When asked about the bands new album Jones also proclaimed "a record as good as this only comes along once in a generation".

"Sensational. I can't believe how good they've got, even since 'Up The Bracket' - and that was a great debut," he explained.

He added: "You had it with The Clash. And now it's The Libertines turn. The lyrics on 'The Man Who Would Be King' are as good as any I've heard. Everything that's happened to them in two years is on this record, and a lot has happened to them."

pete doherty on suicide watch

pete doherty claims he's on "suicide watch" in rehab as libertines fans across the world unite in support for the star.

as reported yesterday, pete has been admitted into the priory clinic in london in an attempt to kick his addiction to drugs.

in a posting this morning with the subject line 'still on suicide watch', pete claimed those looking after him are checking him every ten minutes to ensure his well-being, but he feels like his progress is coming along well.

on babyshambles.com, he wrote: "evidence of self-harm upon my skinny person but nothing could be further from my mind as i awake brighter tailed and bushier eyed than i have done for many a year. yes children the deliriums and caterwaulings are giving in to, well, peter doherty, whoever the fuck that may be.

"today i'm definitely steadier on my feet and shall have a little exploration of this clean place which is probably full of celebrities in towelling robes. enough to make anyone give up crack and smack. might even try a few press-ups.... er, yeah 17 should suffice for now. nurse! where's my apple juice and coffee and biscuit like on the poster?"

since yesterday fans have been emailing nme.com to show their support for pete.

one fan, known only as hannah, wrote: "just a little note to say keep it up and all that! all of old albion is behind you! don't ever lose that cute little smile."

martin from austria added: "i hope you feel better as fast as possible! here in austria we love you."

parker fishel from america wrote to say: "i really can't explain how important the libertines are to me. stay strong, follow your heart, live in the music, get your act together and arcadia will not be such a stretch, not only for you but for anyone who believes in the power of soul and music to save the world, cut the ribbon and get the girl. get better soon pete!"

do you have a message of support for pete? if so, mail news@nme.com.

FOR PETE'S SAKE!

A drugs rehabilitation charity whose president is 'EASTENDERS' actress JUNE BROWN have offered troubled LIBERTINES star PETE DOHERTY free treatment.

The charity, TKB, aim to raise funds to help those in need of relief from any form of addiction, narcotic or otherwise, by supplying a means to a route of passage to Thailand's Thamkrabok Monastery for detox.

The Monastery claim to provide one of the most successful detoxification and rehabilitation programs in the World, having treated over 100,000 patients since it's inception in 1958.

A charity spokesperson told NME.COM: "We have funds and we would like to offer Pete the best chance in the world to recover, for free, by travelling to Thamkrabok for immediate treatment. The offer, although bizarre in nature, is a genuine one."

PETE 'LEAVES' THE LIBERTINES
Source: NME

PETE DOHERTY has claimed he's leaving THE LIBERTINES but has left the door open for a reunion with bandmate CARL BARAT.

The guitarist, who has spent some of the last month in The Priory in a fresh attempt to kick his drug addiction, has given an interview with The Sun newspaper where he said he plans to go to France with his girlfriend to beat the drugs. He claimed that being in rehab wasn't helping.

He said: "I was barely aware of what was going on in (rehab). All these visitors were coming in to see me and saying they were my family and my sisters - but really they weren't. I want to clean up but it's something I have to do on my own terms."

Despite getting regular visits from friends and family, including Barat, the paper quotes Pete as saying he thinks he is treated badly by Carl.

He continued: "It's got to the point where Carl and I don't speak except on stage. It breaks my heart. He treats me badly and every time I come running back like a battered housewife.

"I feel like I'm seeking the ghost of a former friendship but Carl gave up on me years ago. He did come to see me in The Priory but I hardly remember his visit."

However, Pete said that there's still hope for The Libertines, who have finished their second album and are due to tour later this month including a selection of festival appearances across the country.

He said: "If (Carl) comes and grabs me by the hand, maybe we can reclaim the empire together. But for now I'm out of the band. Surely no one wants to see me trapped in this cage that is only making me miserable."

wow, i cant believe ( I REFUSE TO BELIEVE ) that this is the actual album, and yet... it must be.  hopefully these are some sort of rough demos, before Mick Jones came on to hammer out the final versions because, even for a rough-and-tumble punk outfit, these are SLOPPY AS SHIT.  the first two songs show promise, and are pretty good but could still use to be re-recorded like, better.  but the rest of hte album is just ?  so, this sucks.  its the sound of heroin in your singer/songwriter.

I was lucky enough to catch both Babyshambles shows last week. Their warmer at the Garage was in front of about 600 screaming fanatics (and really REALLY hot teenage girls -- it's cool to finally like a band that has some kind of underground hot girl movement following it), and they delivered a fantastic, if unfortunately short, set. I was close enough to see that Pete's looking much better these days (of course, by 'better' I mean in Pete standards, as Pete usually looks one hue pinker than death white). I must also say that, despite the Libs rising to be my favorite band over the last year, 'Shambles are better. The lead guitarist is amazing.

Onto the Brixton Academy show.

I had high hopes that this would propel Pete The Musician into the Brit public consciousness, rather than Pete the Junkie Who Happens To Fuck Kate Moss. Sorta did and sorta didn't. After a fucked up start where they had to stop after the 2nd song cos people in the front row were getting crushed, they were playing a lot looser than normal, which doesn't suite the songs that are on the verge of coming apart as it is. The mic cord kept getting tangled in the singer's monitors, and this must have been the world record for most appearances by an inept stagehand since Spinal Tap. They just couldn't fix the damn thing, and kept running out in front of Pete. Finally, the guitar chord and the mic cord got wrapped up, and Pete got yanked back when the guitarist went into one of his crazy moments. In frustration, Pete turned around and gave him a little shove, then went back to singing. When the guitarist realised what happened, he went behind Pete and kicked him in the back. Pete then turned around, they squared off, dropped their instruments, and went at it on stage. After being separated, and having a 5 minute cooldown, they came back on with Black Boy Lane, then Man Who Came To Stay (my personal fav), then a new one, then the usual closers Albion and Fuck Forever (probably their best tune). It was as tight and perfect as ever for these last ones. I think the fight did them some good getting over the nerves. Classic how every Shambles gig always turns into a nail-biter as to whether it will finish or not. The first time I saw them at Kentish Town Forum, Pete got a little kid from backstage to sing What Katie Did with him, and some guy threw a full beer can at the kid's head!! So of course they had to stop the show, and almost walked off...

Anyway, these guys need to get into the studio and record an album NOW! With only three released songs in their setlist, they have the crowd singing along and freaking out for pretty much every tune -- they've all become crowd classics of a near Don't Look Back In Anger proportion.

Oh, and Mod, what are you talking about?!! The Libs album sounds AMAZINGLY PERFECT. Jeez...

warning: disturbing pictures

Pete injects female fan

DRUG fiend Pete Doherty stoops to a shocking new low in pictures showing him injecting heroin into an unconscious fan.

The junkie Babyshambles singer, who has won the heart of supermodel Kate Moss, was snapped jabbing the pretty youngster as she lay in his squalid kitchen.

Other pictures seen by The Sun show the rocker — who faces drugs charges — injecting himself and being helped to take drugs by a girl using her hands to form a makeshift tourniquet.

Yet another sees Doherty, 27, smoke a "crack bowl", his tattooed and blood-stained arms betraying his addiction.

The disturbing scenes were captured by a pal at Doherty's pad in Hackney, East London, within the last five weeks.

Scotland Yard today announced detectives are to quiz the rock star over the shocking photographs.

Kate, 32 — who has been secretly seeing the singer despite claims they had split — was NOT present when the drug photographs were taken.

The comatose girl is from a middle-class background and idolises Doherty, often visiting him at his flat. She was left on the floor while he and his pals prepared more class A drugs for themselves.

A source said: "Doherty will self-destruct. He has no regard for his or anyone else's safety.

"It's one thing killing himself, but to inject a young girl as she lies on the floor is a disgrace. He should be in jail.

"Kate and Pete never split up. And the longer she sees him the greater the danger of her exposure to drugs."

Mum-of-one Kate, seen in a separate shot printed in today's Sun newspaper looking dazed and dishevelled in bed, entered rehab to escape cocaine. She claimed she finished with Doherty due to his addiction.

But pals fear she is mixing with a drug-fuelled world of depravity that could ruin her chances of staying clean.

The shot of the bleary-eyed beauty in bed is recent — and thought to have been taken by Doherty at a secret location.

Our exclusive shots will infuriate anti-drugs campaigners who wanted Doherty jailed for his open drug abuse.

The rocker is on two years' probation after admitting seven counts of possession.

He was put on an 18-month rehabilitation order and given a six-month driving ban.

But hours after a hearing last week he was arrested on suspicion of possessing a class A drug with intent to supply and bailed pending inquiries.

Doherty is tested for drugs every month under his rehab order — but has failed twice.

At his grotty home, he has pushed used needles into his dartboard and drawn graffiti on the walls using his own BLOOD.
