Title: Starsky & Hutch
Post by: IHeartPTA on August 22, 2003, 12:27:54 PM
Anyone gonna be seein it?

http://www.imdb.com/Title?0335438

Got potential, I'm thinking that it will be an entertaining piece, since they've got Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson in lead, director of Old School/Road Trip doing it. My problem is Snoop Dogg in a major role.

I feel the same way Samuel L. feels (http://www.imdb.com/WN?20020723#6)

But, yeah, I plan on seeing Ben and Owen.

I've never seen "Starsky and Hutch" before but if Stiller acts anything like he did in the Cops skits on The Ben Stiller Show then this will be classic. I still say he's the funniest actor working today...."Along Came Polly" (maybe) aside....who knows though, it may surprise me...."Safe Men" is an indy classic.

it looks like the funniest thing ever.  supposedly comes out this summer.

Dodgeball
Stars: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Christine Taylor
Plot: When the financial future of their favorite gym is threatened to be taken over by a national fitness franchise, a group of friends (led by Stiller) agree to compete as a dodgeball team at a "winner takes all" competition in Las Vegas against a team (led by Vaughn) that's the best the big corporation can buy.

snoop is like Christopher Walken 2.0 now, it's like everytime you want a funny cameo/ co-star, you just call snoop.

but about sam jackson's comment, I think Ice Cube is a real actor.  He wrote Friday, which was a really funny movie, and was in Three Kings.  Sam's never written no funny movie and never really played any character outside "The Baddest Shittalking Motherfucker in the Entire Movie", even in arthouse pics like The Red Violin, and even when he sits in a wheelchair.

plus I don't really see how necessarily better it is to lend credibility of colin farrel or vin diesel.

I just saw this tonight.  It's funny... It was a little better than what I was expecting.

It was pretty much as good as Zoolander... maybe Zoolander was a little better, but it's hard to tell after one viewing.

I would see it again on dvd, but I don't think I'd ever buy it.

Overall, I was scared it was gonna suck because there are so many funny people in it and that often spells disaster, but it didn't suck and was definitely worth shelling out eight bucks to see in the theater.

Don't think I should create a thread for a non-movie, so I guess this is the best place for it...

So Todd Philips says there's no Old School 2 anymore.  The details from CHUD:

Q: How about the rumors about an Old School 2?

Todd: No, we're not going to do Old School 2.

Q: Why not?

Todd: I had a little fall-out with DreamWorks over this movie Eurotrip.  I felt like they really marketed it off of my two movies even though I had nothing to do with it and it looked like the worst movie ever, but somehow I got dragged into it and it made me crazy.  I said, 'If you do this, I won't do Old School 2.'  And they said, 'Well, this is business and we've got to worry about this movie right now.'  So, I said, 'All right.'

Q: It has a really similar plot to Road Trip...

Todd: Ah, I don't want to talk about it.  I didn't see it, I won't see it and it pissed me off, so I won't do business with them.  It's a bummer.

So it looks like we get no more further adventures of 'Frank the Tank.'  FUCK EUROTRIP!

I saw it last night and I didn't think it was that great. For all the funny people involved, it should have been a lot better than it was. Vince Vaughn's character wasn't that funny, and it even seemed in some scenes like the movie really wanted you to take him seriously as a villian. That was the main problem with the movie, the tone was all over the place. In some scenes it was a goofy comedy, and then in other scenes it was more of a straight action flick. I hate to break it to Todd Phillips, but I thought "Eurotrip" was a lot funnier than this movie, and I think most audiences are going to react the same way too. Maybe Phillips just isn't as funny when he makes a PG-13 movie- "Road Trip" and "Old School" were both R.

The best part of the movie was Ben Stiller reprising a character he used to do on his sketch show- the old Jewish guy who says "Do it. Do it"

Well, Oldschool had Will Ferrell in a very active roll and was pretty damned funny, but S&H is better than Road Trip, which went for shitty cheap laughs, and not very professionally either.

I don't think Starsky and Hutch took itself at ALL seriously, just barely enough to keep a plot going.  The action was way too ridiculous to think that they wanted a real action movie.

The audience I was with was cracking up and raving about this movie.  It will do well.

I really hope this is better than Old School, which was the funniest movie ever for the first 25 minutes, then didn't register on the laugh-o-meter for the rest of the time (well, maybe except for Will burning himself). i saw this and i am not a fan.  it seems like todd phillips is under the impression that setting the movie in the seventies and having the characters wear seventies' clothes is funny enough in itself to make this a comedy, but it really isn't.  It was funnier in the preview than in the the actual movie.  There really aren't too many jokes, and aside from Will Farrell as the inmate who likes dragons, and Owen Wilson singing, i didn't laugh out loud at anything else.

I think PTA was a guest director in the disco scene.  Patton Oswalt played the DJ, there were lots of steadicam swish pans, and something about the lighting was very Boogie Nights-esque.

Any PAs on Starsky & Hutch out there that can confirm/deny this?

i just saw this. everything about it was hilarious. ben stiller and owen wilson are obviously a perfect team (see Zoolander). owen and ben playing opposite each other at all will be funny. ben stillers character sort of reminded me of him as chaz in The Royal Tenenbaums. him being somewhat flustered and psychotic at times. i dont know. i love the 70s. i never saw the t.v. show, but i doubt you need to. i couldnt imagine anyone else but snoop dog as huggy bear. on conan, snoop mentioned chris rock and don cheadle as being up for this role. i cant believe this part was not written for him. vince vaughn with his 70s mustache was genius. the soundtrack was classic 70s and fit really well. the women in this film are hot.....70s hot. i wont say it was funnier than Zoolander, but it was funny  nonetheless. just a great, fun movie.

yeah i saw this yesterday and i have to agree with you.  the tone to this movie was really bizarre.  its almost as if, for the most part, they wrote a script that could've been played 'straight' had they cast more serious actors in the 3 leads, but in casting 3 comic leads and allowing them to basically, well 'what if you guys were on the show?!' it creates some weird semi-serious tone most of the time.  i blame todd phillips for this.  i was under the impression that the movie was going to be more like a parody, allowing for as many jokes as possible and completely silly.  instead, it was sort of like the Charlies Angels movies in the way that, although ridiculous, they still somewhat want you to follow the story as an action vehicle.  the concept, had someone pitched it to me earlier, i think is a REALLY interesting one, like had they taken a real script from an episode of S&H and allowed vince, ben, owen to play those parts and improv on them, i think SOUNDS like a great idea.  but this just wasnt as funny as it could've been.  the whole idea was half baked.

Okay, was it just me or did anyone else think Starkey & Hutch were gay?

This movie was okay, and Stiller and Wilson are the perfect team, but they aren't given much to do here and it comes no where near the hilarity that is Zoolander. It seemed like series of vignettes strung together with no regard for a basic plot; even giving in to the cliches of a buddy cop film. There was so much in the tv show just ripe for parody, and it's seen a bit in the opening where Starsky is chasing a perp (and again in the montage when they're shaking down thugs) - complete with hand-held, snap-zooms and the 70's score. But instead it felt as is the film played a it with a 'okay, it's set in the 70's, let's make fun of the era'. That said, it did have a pretty cool soundtrack though.

Yeah, I noticed that too. On "I Love the 70's" they mentioned something about some of the things on the t.v. series were rather...homoerotic? So, I'm guessing the movie just played off that to a larger extent.
Had its share of moments though. Will Ferrel is the best.

Favourite scene from Zoolander "What is this? A school for ants!?". I watched that section of the trailer so many times.

For people in England, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are being interviewed together on Jonathan Ross's Chat Show on Friday Night, BBC. If they warm to him, which I'm sure they will, it should be extremely funny.

Still waiting for S&H to go wide here on the 19th. It will be the first time I've been to the movies for quite some time.

The best thing about this movie was Har Mar Superstar's cameo as Disco Rick. Though he was totally wasted, he should have been the singer at the bar mitsvah.

Some thoughts,

This movie was much better than I thought it would be, I thought them playing it as a buddy action film worked, I likened the film more to Lethal Weapon than Zoolander, etc.

Now on the subject of Zoolander, the movie has a few Great, great great moments but the rest kind of falls flat.

Everyone mentions Will Ferrell as being the best part, I disagree...Ferrel's humor wears thin on me and I only think he works as a supporting role (which in this he works).

As a buddy film the film is an enjoyable ride.

EDIT:
I didn't realize that was Har Mar Superstar but I think he is horrible.  I saw him at a concert a few years ago...he got booed of the stage and people threw stuff at him, lots of stuff.

When every single moment of a film is supposed to be funny, or is trying to be funny...it often doesn't work.  Now there are some great moments in the movie, but there are also a lot of times when the jokes are thrown out a mile a minute and they just don't work.

I saw it this evening and really enjoyed it...for a movie I snuck into, although I wouldn't have minded paying for it either. I thought it was really funny, in a pleasantly understated way. It's the kinda movie that you look back on and smile, and if you manage to remember it, it gets funnier the more you think about it.

The homoeroticism was terrific.

of course i did
there were even early talks when magnesium was at its pinnacle of momentum of securing vince vaughn for the part of 'louis'

see 'need 98 pages to read' in brainstroming thread if you care to read the script/give me 2-3 million dollars...
