Post by: Bud_Clay on August 01, 2003, 07:46:37 PM
I need to develope all this film...I've got some 8mm B&W reversal, 8mm color reversal, and some 16mm B&W reversal...

Oh! And I'm going to be in great need of transfering the footage on to Mini DV...

Thirdly I need to purchase some inexpensive Super 8 film..

i need to find a location/or locations that do these such things professionally and with care...also need these things to be cheap cheap cheap..or atleast as cheap as it gets.

thanks

i'm in the process of buying a 16mm filmo camera. once i have it, i'd like to buy some color 16mm film stock (no sound), get it processed, and get it transferrred to mini DV for editing for as little money as possible. i'd like to supplement shots from the handycams that we have to use for the class with shots that'll actually look good... mostly outdoor stuff where depth and other visual elements will be more important. the main purpose of using this is to cut my teeth on shooting with film, even though i will be editing it digitally.

i found this place: http://www.bonofilm.com/Welovenegative.asp which offers two specials that look particularly good for my purposes. outdoor shooting will provide plenty of light for these types of stock (i'm looking at specials #1 and #2). it looks like a great deal for me to start out with.

i'll be editing the piece with final cut and cinema tools.

i also found this place, tfg transfers, that will do 16mm to mini dv for .15/foot... only $15 per hundred foot roll. that's great, but they don't offer telecine prep services, and i'd be on my own to find film stock at a reasonable price.

any input/ideas?

Your best bet for cheap film will be short ends and re-cans.  You can also check out http://www.pro8mm.com/main.php they're going to be bit more pricy.

Just wondering, are you getting a K3?

no, 70d. it'd be nice to have the lenses that rotate, but it's a $500 difference, and if i was gonna do that i'd either get a motorized filmo or a bolex.

recans are okay to shoot with? i thought about it, but i really won't have time or money to re-shoot/re-process anything. i thought it'd be slightly wiser to just go with new stock.

In your case I'd just by new film then.  But short ends are fine.  Once you have a lab you can do a snip test, were they develop a little bit of the film to make sure it's been stored correctly.

here's what it looks like i'll do:

buy the film stock wherever i can find it new/stored properly/inexpensively.

then use this place for film processing and transfer to mini DV:

http://www.posthouse.com/filmprocessing.html

they transfer for $.15/foot and process for $.12/foot when you also get the transfer service. so, that's 100 feet of raw 16mm footage processed and digitalized for $27.

even if film costs $30/roll and i have to eat shipping, it'll still come out about 40 bucks cheaper than those specials on the other site for 400ft.
