harry potter. alfonso cuaron. well, i'm looking forward to it.
I have been waiting for this one... this book is where it gets more cinematic... starts to get really good here and it's in the hands of a different director... never thought Colombus really understood what made the books good.
The Knight bus looks good
my girlfriend has read all the books and she wont stop talking about them, (and how the first two were the worst and they get a lot better as far as the characters and the stories). i liked the first movie a lot. thought the second one was good, but not as good. and am really looking forward to this one. especially with cuaron onboard.
I can't wait for the next HP film. I loved the books, and the films were pretty cool, but they aren't a scratch on the books. Ahem, I even have some of the lego. I know thats sad, but hey, I don't care.
Yeah, the nightbus looks sweet.
God damn, Emma Watson is hot. Look at Radcliffe with his arms around her in the picture... piece of shit should stay away from her. You can clearly see she's trying to get out of his arms. She's trying to run to me but Danny Boy won't let her. I would kick Dan Radcliffe in the nuts if I had the chance... then I'd be all smooth around Emma and woo her into my pants...
yeah, she's becoming a woman... cute as hell too.

Why Cuaron Won't Direct The Goblet of Fire
Source: Entertainment Weekly
At the end of July, the news broke that Mona Lisa Smile director Mike Newell is now in talks to helm the fourth film in the "Harry Potter" franchise, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Alfonso Cuaron is directing the third film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Entertainment Weekly caugt up with him to ask why he won't do another installment.
"It was always only 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' for me. I never thought [seriously] about continuing," said Cuaron.
He was approached by Warner Bros. for the fourth film, but preparing "Goblet" while finishing "Azkaban' seemed too daunting. "Frankly, I'm extremely lazy," he added with an impishly smile.

Mike Newell Confirmed for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Source: Warner Bros. Pictures Sunday, August 10, 2003
Mike Newell has agreed to direct Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth film in the smash-hit series for Warner Bros. Pictures. The announcement was made today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures. Newell most recently completed production on Mona Lisa Smile, starring Julia Roberts, and is also known for directing such critical and popular successes as Four Weddings and A Funeral, Enchanted April and Donnie Brasco.
Production on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is scheduled to begin in England in April, 2004. David Heyman will produce and Steve Kloves will write the screenplay for the film, which is slated for release worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures in late 2005. Newell will be the first British director to helm a Harry Potter movie; the films are based on the best-selling series of books by J.K. Rowling and are set in the U.K.
The first two movies in the Harry Potter series broke worldwide records with a combined box-office gross of nearly $1.9 billion. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third film in the series, is currently being filmed under the direction of Alfonso Cuaron at Leavesden Studios and on location in England and Scotland. However, since the production schedules for that picture and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will overlap, it became infeasible for the same director to oversee both projects.
"We're really happy to bring Mike on board to direct this movie," said Robinov. "He has the ability to get tremendous performances from his actors, and handles drama and comedy equally well. We've been lucky to have worked with excellent filmmakers on the first three Harry Potter movies and we are looking forward to continuing that tradition as we start on this next movie with Mike."
Agreed Heyman, "When Alfonso made the decision to focus on completing 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,' we were faced with the daunting task of finding a director to handle the complex challenges of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire' and to follow in the footsteps of Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron. Mike's rich and diverse body of work show him to be the perfect choice. He has worked with children, made us laugh, and had us sitting on the edge of our seats. He is great with actors and imbues all his characters, all his films, with great humanity. I'm thrilled."
"I'm very excited about directing 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,'" said Newell. "As audiences have become more familiar with both the books and the movies, there has been an increasing challenge to continue to develop each of these characters and to make their world real on the screen. It is a pleasure to follow directors Chris Columbus and Alfonso Cuaron, who have done so much to establish the tradition of Harry Potter on film, and to work with David Heyman and Steve Kloves, whose love and respect for this material have been central to the success of this enormous undertaking."
Newell, through his company Fifty Cannon Entertainment, has executive produced such films as Traffic, I Capture the Castle and High Fidelity.
I really can't wait for this one either. Too bad he wont do any others
Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire: The kids of "Harry Potter" were always signed for three films, but there's been a lot of speculation since 'Chamber' over whether they'll continue beyond their originally contracted tenure. Now, 'Harry' himself Daniel Radcliffe whose currently shooting the third film "Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban" has confirmed to The BBC that he will appear in the fourth film "Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire" which is expected to begin production next year for release late 2005. Concerns have been raised over the 14-year-old actor being 'too old' for the part, and some talk over money issues in the process but Radcliffe sounds committed to the franchise - "It always feels good working with Emma, Rupert, Tom (Felton, Draco Malfoy) and Matthew (Lewis, Neville Longbottom). We have become very good friends and as this is now the third film we have made together our relationships just get stronger". Radcliffe is unsure however if he or co-stars Emma Watson & Rupert Grint will do the fifth film "Harry Potter & The Order of the Phoenix", but he does confirm that the aforementioned Matthew Lewis will be back for 'Goblet'.

IGN reports:
"Cuaron has said that he's creating a much darker and more mature Potter film than the previous two. The director was also a stickler for realism during the production. One example comes from a recently article in ic Liverpool. The online mag reveals that in spite of the plethora of computer-animated special effects tools at his disposal, Cuaron hired illusionist Paul Kieve to create live-action "magic" for the film."
Apparently Radcliffe has a knack for "magic," if you can imagine that, and has taken it up as a hobby of his. Life imitates art, eh?
The article also comments on GoF and how Newell feels about taking over for Cuaron.
You can read it here, if you haven't done so already:

This is going to be the best HP film of the lot isn't it. Having read the books it was always my favourite, but I think this film is going to be more than just a blockbuster (which is what the other two were), it looks like it's gonna be really dark, and Cuaron seems to be using his low-budget experience to good use. Seriously can't fucking wait.
Newell Says Goblet of Fire Will be One Film
Source: Empire Online Friday, January 30, 2004
Rumors have been circulating that Warner Bros. may split up Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire into two films, due to the size of the book. Not so, Mike Newell tells Empire magazine. "As far as I'm concerned it's absolutely possible to do it in one. I think it would be slightly embarrassing to do it in two."
The director said he'll also be taking the franchise in yet another new direction. "It's a classic paranoid thriller in a way. I've spent Christmas watching things like The Parallax View and The Insider and Three Days of the Condor. What you have is a story at the beginning of which the powers of evil have a plan, which is absolutely not revealed to your hero. The kid just wonders into another year at school, then this huge notion of the competition surprises him. But there is, of course, a malign intelligence which is manipulating things. And so he gets more and more suspicious until there is a shoot-out between him and the bad guy. That's a really good, strong thriller shape."
This franchise could get really interesting if WB give the directors their way. A gritty coming-of-age movie, then a paranoid thriller.... Far more excited about these next two than the CC ones...

I really can't wait for this to come out. I read the first three in fifth/sixth grade, and then for the longest time I hated the books due to their sudden popularity. I decided to reread them recently, including the fourth and fifth ones, and the third was definitely one of my favorites (I have yet to finish the fifth, though). This'll be good, I bet.

Man that was the stupidest interview I've ever read. All I learned is that Malfoy and Hermione won't date and that there'll be a new Minister of Magic. But besides that, these kids are stupid. I don't know how JKR can stand them, though it seemed at parts that someone was answering for her.
Heh, that reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where they got to England and meet Rowling, and she tells Lisa "Harry grows up, and he marries you. Is that what you want to hear?" Lisa nods enthusiastically.
BTW, Chest, I'm TOTALLY with you on the books. I love them. The day I spent reading the last one last year is a cherished memory.

Don't bust out the "numchucks," Reed-o. Relax.
Prisoner of Azkaban is the first GREAT Potter book. This one is probably going to make the best film (of the 5 books so far). I think the books have gotten better with each one, but 4 and 5 may be TOO big to effectively make great movies (time will tell) so Azkaban could be it, I think.

Sorry for the comment. I was just egging you on into giving me a real response like your last post.
That said, I agree. It all starts with PoA, really. I have a really good feeling for this movie, and heck, it has Gary Oldman. I dunno if his (I'm assuming) little screentime can beat Kenneth Branagh's Gilderoy Lockhart, though. The main thing that excites me about this one is Alfonso Cuaron and, well, I've always thought Emma Watson was kinda cute. Of the three main characters I think she does the best (though I have nothing against the others). Either way, it looks to be good.

Cuaron Impressed Columbus
Chris Columbus, producer of the upcoming Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, told SCI FI Wire that he's particularly impressed with how director Alfonso Cuaron, who assumed the director's chair from him following Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, has handled several key sequences in the new film. "As a director I've always been excited about sequences," Columbus said in an interview. "When I talk about my favorite films it's always certain moments in a film, certain sequences, whether it's Michael Corleone sitting in that restaurant right before he's about to shoot the sergeant or whether it's Marlon Brando and Rod Steiger in the back seat of the car in On the Waterfront."
Columbus, who said he's already seen Azkaban three times, added, "In Azkaban, that kind of scene for me is the first attack on the train by the Dementors. It's such a beautifully directed scene that Alfonso has done. I remember that scene immensely. And there's also Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe) first ride on the hippogryph, which is just magical and poetic. Those are the two scenes that really stick with me. I keep thinking about those scenes constantly and [also about] how proud I am to be involved in them, but mostly how wonderful a job Alfonso has done as a director."
Was Columbus particularily happy with the way that Cuaron used the kids as more than just 2 second cutaway reactions? That probably blows Columbus' mind, cos that's all he can do...
Dursleys are 'cut from Potter 4'
The film of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire looks like it will be a Dursley-free zone, with none of Harry's family featuring in the fourth movie.
Actor Richard Griffiths' agent told Newsround Online that Richard was "very disappointed" not to be appearing as Uncle Vernon in the film.
Griffiths also told a newspaper that he was hoping for a fans' revolt.
He said he'd even asked JK Rowling to try and get his character re-instated, but the fourth book is very long.
Griffiths is reported as saying "I said to JK Rowling: "Couldn't the Dursleys turn up to an open day at Harry's school or something,' but she said, 'I don't think so'."
The book of The Goblet of Fire is so long that there as no way that the filmmakers could fit everything into the movie.
It now looks as if the action will start at The Burrow or the Quidditch World Cup.
Although he says he won't be in this film, Richard Griffith says he's hoping to be back for Order of the Phoenix.
That's actually a brilliant move. The same structure of beginning at home every time was getting old real fast.
It's necessary to trim the unnecessary for the fourth film, for sure.
It would be good to start it at the Quiddich world cup because that's where the bulk of the story begins anyway.
Order of Phoenix will have to, at least, have Dudley in it though, very important scene.
did I just dork out?
The fifth movie will need the entire family. Remember the howler...I'd say that's pretty important and worth the extra 20 seconds.
Quote from: RegularKarateOrder of Phoenix will have to, at least, have Dudley in it though, very important scene.
Yeah, that scene is essential. I think Order will be much easier to adapt, though...The Goblet Of Fire is unwieldly on an enormous level, and it's going to be damn near impossible to make a well balanced film out of it. Even without the Dursleys, you're still looking at a four-act structure. Between the sheer size of the text and the good but not outstanding track record of Mike Newell, I'm not expecting greatness out of the next film. But maybe it'll suprise me...
Harry should grow a stache.
So they've hit puberty, and the poster accentuates that nicely. How surreal. I've never even seen any of these movies or read the books. WTF am I doing in this thread?
Quote from: OnomatopaellaWTF am I doing in this thread?

How HUGE is this?
Hollywood star John Malkovich has landed a starring role in the next Harry Potter movie, playing evil Lord Voldemort. The Dangerous Liaisons actor's daughters Amandine, 13 and Lowrie, 12 - huge fans of the fantasy franchise - convinced him to appear in Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. But he will have to share the part with a computerized puppet - at the beginning of the film, the wizard is supposed to be so wasted by his own evil he is barely a skeleton. A movie insider says, "He is perfect for the role. He will play the 'restored' human version of Lord Voldemort and has a spectacular fight scene with Harry at the end of the film." Mike Newell has taken on directing duties on the fourth Potter picture, which recently began shooting. The first two were helmed by Chris Columbus and the third - the soon to be released Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban - was directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
Too bad that rumor has been debunked already, would've been a great great piece of casting.

In response to the above queries: that terrific song is in the movie, to the same extent that it's in the trailer (meaning, you've already heard the whole thing).
And the artistic integrity of the film -- yes, it's easy to top Chris Columbus, but Cuaron definitely brings a distinct touch. It's far less storybook in its appearance, much more dank and realistic.
JB, it took me forever to read the books. I started the first one and couldn't get past the thirtieth page. I generally don't like fantasy like that at all, but when I finally tried again, I got hooked and read the rest of them at the rate of about one per day. It's insane how addictive they are. But if it ain't your thing, I know where you're coming from. I'm a surprise convert.
it was definitely very good, i had a few minor problems, mostly to do with the overall pacing.
on another note, a question: does the possible annoying-ness of the audience on opening night of a "big" movie outweigh the desire to see that movie on said night???
or maybe i'm just too easily annoyed
Cool. Thanks, Ghostboy.
I never used to like the books, but after rereading them I'm really interested to know what happens to the characters.
Definetly, definetly, definetly blew Chis Columbus out of the water. This movie is much more dark and adventurous than the first two. Cuaron pays much more attention to details that add to the movie as a whole rather than those that please the book fans.
Although I do agree, the pacing of the movie was off a bit. It barreled through summer, fall, and winter and then spring dragged on. But all in all the ever-flowing camera work and brooding undertones of the movie made it far superior to the first two.
SPOILER (kind of)
the freeze frame ending was hilarious.
Saw it today. Man was it awesome. Definitely my favorite of the series thus far. It's so much more artistically crafted than the other two, and I liked the little motifs concerning time and spheres that I noticed. Very well made.
The acting is much more believable in this one than the other two, as well; perhaps it's just the little actors growing up into their characters, or change of direction? And generally it's much darker than the other two, which works seeing as how the series is continually growing darker with each one. Very good.
EDIT: Did anyone else notice that some of the shots wouldn't work at all in full screen?
Yeah, the ones where Harry and Hermione watch their earlier counterparts jump immediately to mind.
Also, here's my full review (http://www.road-dog-productions.com/harrypotter3.html).
i liked this movie, but i still think the first one is my favorite. i'd have to watch it again because i havent seen it in a while though, but that movie seemed to do the most coherent job moving the story along and introducing you to the whole world with such wonder while the previous 2 sort of had to blow through everything just to cram all this stuff in without having much breathing room to stop and smell the magic. (a review i read said something basically about how some of the scenes sort of flew by and others happened in real time), so the pacing is a little sloppy in that regard. i liked how the characters are growing up and some of Harry's angst.
SPOILERS MAJOR
im really getting sick of a few things though. ONE) how all the teachers have all this crucial information but refuse to give any to harry even though his life is in danger every movie. and TWO) how their information never seems to be all the way right and there is a twist at the end of every film. who is she M Knight Rowlathan?! i wanted Gary oldman to be an evil murderous crazy, not harrys friend! after 2 hours of dread and staring at that fantastically insane poster, to have to be let down like that was rough!
END SPOILERS
the movie was still pretty good although i was not as blown away as i had hoped from the advance word and the promise of Cuaron directing. i'd have to see it again. BTTF2 anyone?
I loved it. It could've been longer, IMO. I was ready for another hour and then it ended so suddenly, so abruptly....
And while I loved it, I'm not sure if it's my favorite out of the 3 so far. The best crafted, certainly, but the others (especially the first) seem to have a more magical and wonderous atmosphere about it. But I do love the direction the series has taken. I loved the look of this film, however, and I'm anxious to see how Newell follows it up.
Am i the only one who wishes Johnny Depp played Sirius Black?

uhhh, wasting a wish on taking gary oldman OUT of this movie?!?! yeah, i'd say you're the only one.
Its not that i dislike Gary Oldman. Its just that ever since i read the book i had pictured Depp.
No, you're definitely the only person here who thinks Depp could be a better Sirius. He's much too young. Plus Oldman has a larger mouth the better to scream at you with.
did anyone read roger ebert's review, it seems like he had a mental lapse when he was watching the movie. it didn't seem like he really knew what was going on.
That happens on a pretty regular basis with him these days.
a great movie...easily the best of the three. alfonso curaron kicks chris columbus' ass. i was sad that there wasnt more alan rickman, but you cant win them all. i thought gary oldman was great. i reccomend.
I saw this tonight. I must say I really enjoyed how well Alfonso put it together. I'm really hoping a fourth movie can be pulled off, they'll probably have to cut out a lot, i hope not though. Even if they made it 3 hours long i'd still be there to watch it, and i'm sure most people who love the series wouldn't mind, it'd be like LOTR. I actually wish this one would have been longer too.
I think the 4th one will be somewhat disappointing, becuz they will be trying so hard to pull off a PG rating and keep it child oriented, when in actuality its an even darker story than the 3rd.
Saw this in IMAX last night. Remarkable. Cuaron nailed the vibe of the books (and those irises... oh, those beautiful irises). For the first time, the wizard world felt real. The set design felt more organic; nothing begs for attention anymore which I think suits the stories. For instance, the scene when Ron's father is talking to Harry in the pub and the Sirius Black WANTED posters are synched up with each other... it was so simple but perfect. Finally, Harry knows enough about the wizard world (and so do we) that he doesn't need blatant exposition (and neither do we).
Aside from that, the actors looked more comfortable in this world; the characters actually seem like they live there instead of being along for the ride like us.
And Daniel Radcliffe has finally become Harry. He was just some kid who looked like Harry Potter and he never quite sold it for me until this one.
Let's hope that, with the Harry Potter film bar being raised now, Mike Newell keeps it going. I, for one, am not very enthusiastic about him directing Goblet of Fire. I don't think that he'll turn it into a kiddie minstrel show like Chris Columbus did (maybe that's a bit harsh, I enjoyed the first two), but I'm not very reassured that he'll pick up where Cuaron left off either. But if Cuaron doesn't come back for Order of the Phoenix, it's time to give Gilliam a call.
I thought this movie was awesome. After the averageness of the first two films, this one really got me enthusiastic about HP again. And that's dispite the jarring pace about half-way through the film when they suddenly expose the twist.
When I was watching it I just thought it was beautiful - Cuaron has taken what is - arguably - the biggest film franchise in the world at the moment and has made it into an art film! One example - that long time in the pub where Ron's Dad talks to him. I just thought it was brilliant. He was even trying to out-do Hudsucker with all those circle imagery. And do all the flying objects have any significance, because he seemed to be overdoing that after a while - everytime someone stepped outside a bird seemed to fly right through the frame.
Finally, I think the new-look Hogwarts is far better than CC achieved. I'm not just talking about the courtyard and that wooden bridge, but the sloping hills, the giant rocks, the view... This will be a hard one to beat. And I don't think 4 will do it.
Be optimistic guys.
This was definitely the best of the three films... I'm glad that CC was off this one, but they SERIOUSLY need to get a new screenwriter. Perhaps one who understands what makes the books good.
I don't get it... they're always trying to leave in shit we don't need and take out shit that matters.
I think Cuaron did an excellent job with this, but if they had given film one to Gilliam, the series itself might have gone in a better direction.
Book 4 is my favorite of the whole series, I hope they pull it off right. Obviously, they'll have to cut a lot out of it. Hopefully Kloves will have the sense to focus on less side plots instead of try to briefly cover every single one without getting involved enough to care.
i agree with you there RK, kloves really needs to go
The first two were really conventional but I was really impressed by the visual flair of the third. I only hope the fourth is going to be up to par.
Quote from: RegularKarateHopefully Kloves will have the sense to focus on less side plots instead of try to briefly cover every single one without getting involved enough to care.
Exactly! That totally sums up what's wrong with the movies. They don't understand how movies are different than books. So the first two movies just seemed like watered down versions of the books. Instead of changing certain things to suit it better visually and leaving some stuff out and going deeper into the stuff they do include. I'm finally seeing the third one tonight. I've been looking forward to it for a while and i'm sure it will be a major improvement. Alfonso Cauron seems to be more passionate about the material than Columbus. But, yes, I still think they need to get rid of Kloves. I'll let you all know what you think later on.
Can they really just get rid of Kloves? I thought he was one of the founding members of the Harry Potter Movies Club. One of the things I noticed with the third one was that it seemed to really take a little more liberty with the material (a fact a lot of people seem angry with, accusing the movie of rushing the plot, etc.). I don't know if suddenly Kloves is trying to make them more films than Librovies (Liber + Movies...get it?...ok....), or if it had something to do with Alfy or Rowling.
Oh, and I thought I read somewhere that Rowling keeps a tigh chain around Kloves' writing (for purposes of making sure he puts in things necessary to the complete story and not adding in things we shouldn't yet know). So fire her.

$10,000 in an off-shore bank account and i can make it happen
too bad you can't avoid the crapiness of the script and kid actors.
eg. "--DEAD. YES I KNOW." etc.
i give it not good out of good.
Who asked you, anyway?
Well, yea the script was almost as bas as usual and I thought the acting was even worse than the first two films. But I forgive all that because I thought the direction was brilliant. Alfonso Cauron did some made some of the most creative camera angles I've seen all year. And I liked the look and the production design a lot more than the first two as well. More darkr and gothic looking. I'll probably see it again pretty soon just because I had so much fun the first time.

Haha, maybe this will help (http://www.xixax.com/viewtopic.php?t=5875&highlight=directing).
Oh, and this (http://xixax.com/viewtopic.php?p=147732#147732) too.
ohhhhhhhhh, now I get it. I should have known it was something like this:
Quote from: Pubrickso do u mean he did a good job putting the shots? telling ppl what to do? having a vision? telling the actors what to do? eating? shaving?
what i'm implying here is "the directing was good" doesn't mean anything.
I forget I have to watch how I phrase things on here to avoid pointless arguements. I guess what I meant was that - although the actors probably were not directed very well since the acting wasn't much in my opinion - I simply
enjoyed certain parts of the way the technical side of the direction was...
Oh nevermind. Theres no point, Laugh Out Loud!
