Man...nobody seems to talk much about them ..I guess they are few and far between..I think most are not the athletic type (maybe?)...But  two films one based on baseball and one based on football are hallmarks in this cheese-ed out genre.

1.)Any Given Sunday-Stone did this film just like the game of ootball itself Fast, and hardcore , and loud, full of adrenaline..loved this film really good stuf here.

2.)Field of Dreams-this film needs to be revisited ......criterion.... or the studio should put out a 2-disk se...

what about you guys?
or could you care less?

or maybe you tried out sports and you sucked and since then you have a vendetta out against anything sports?

I didn't care too much for Hoop Dreams, myself.  Thought it was bloated and a bit manipulative (something documentaries shouldn't try to be, IMO -- I'm more of a cinema verite kind of guy).  Among my favorites are The Sandlot, Pistol: The Birth of a Legend, and White Men Can't Jump.  Rudy, Hoosiers, and Bend it Like Beckham are great, too.

You took the words out of my mouth man.  Field of Dreams must be revisited.  And let's not forget The Natural.

I just blind bought Any Given Sunday on VHS....I'll get to it one of these days.

Oh, and Major League is one of my guilty pleasures.  :)

Oh my fucking god, yes! I used to love that so much, lol! Completely forgot about it. Is it out on dvd? I'll buy it just for nostalgia. Rob Schneider's best role, hands down.

I was so into the nineties ninja family movie craze that is overlooked and  forgotten now unfortunately...it definitely deserves to be revived. I was all about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy, 3 Ninjas, 3 Ninjas Kick Back and yes, even Surf Ninjas. I guess I was always bound to discover and love Quentin Tarantino and later, the kung fu films of the 70's and 80's.

Yeah, I knew you were gonna say that. Crazy.

I almost considered not putting Field on the list... but it's so completely rooted in baseball, whereas Raging Bull has not so much actual boxing, and I find the boxing to be.. I dunno, it's gonna sound snooty... somewhat of a symbol for Jake's need to be punished.... it's so much more of a connecting thread sub-plot... to me anyway. Marty does it so crazy-cool-different that it just becomes way more than sport, imo. This makes no sense, I know.

Oh my god man, you liked 3 Ninjas too!? Wow, we definitely did grow up in the same era. Lol, I used to cry everytime my video store didn't have it. For some reason, we never thought to buy it...I'd just rent it a million times. The video store guy would always ask us why we didn't just buy it...which I think we finally ended up doing. Were you the other person always getting it out? I always vowed I would kill that person if I ever met them in the video store. Same deal with 3 Ninjas Kick Back after seeing it theatres only once.

But "Raging Bull" is more of a sports/boxing movie because it's a about the life of a boxer, where as "Field Of Dreams" uses the sport of baseball as a macguffin. In fact, it doesn't even explore the sport or really show scenes of playing the game. You could have replaced the sport with, say, basketball, but I understand it's the nostalgia of that particular sport that comes across. I would've listed it too, but it was already mentioned.

I'm just saying that a lot of these "sports films" are really more about the characters who play them, rather than the actual sport itself. That's why I would include "Raging Bull" along with "Field Of Dreams" on the list.

the video store man always used to ask my dad why we didn't just buy that, the two ghostbusters movies, and i think probably explorers or something....i used to watch those like it was my fucking job.  i'm too afraid to give any of them a look now becuz i'm afraid I'll ruin everything by seeing just how truly shitty theyre reputed to be.  maybe ill leave em alone just so i can have the memory of them being great, i dont wanna ruin it.  heh, i saw 3 ninjas on TV a few weeks ago and i watched a few minutes of it and i had to turn it off becuz i just knew if i took it any further, all of my good memories would be crushed.

I saw the first two Three Ninjas, and also Surf Ninjas, but unfortunately I was already slightly past the age where I might have been able to enjoy them. Don't soil your memories.

My favorite sports movie is He Got Game, and if not that then The Sandlot.

Someone want to explain why they thought "Any Given Sunday" was good, let alone a defining sports film?

I found it to be long and very, very dull. And considering it dealt with football and the like, that's a feat Stone must have labored on.

hahha. steamin willy beaman, eh? i never thought of callin u that. perhaps u should consider altering ur screename.

these r the reasons why i luv the movie tho- to get back to the other thing;

- the steamin beaman montage, as mentioned above, for one, is classic
- the colors, looks almost impressionistic
- the music
- the look cameron diaz gives tony at the party after her mom gives back the football ring, w/ ella fitzgerald playing in the background
- the hyper-active camera that puts u right on the field, in conjunction w/ the music makes for an extremely visceral and exciting experience
- that final speech pacino gives at the end. if that shit don't sent chills down ur back i dont know what's amatta w/ u.
- the last game, which is the game of all games.
- the bill withers 'use me up' montage- too good.

so yea, i guess the main complaint i here from ppl is that the movie is exhausting, but why is that necessarily a negative thing? shouldn't all sports movies be exhausting?

my only complaint with that movie is that I felt it had a whole bunch of threads that just unraveled and fizzed out at the end, whereas his masterpiece JFK had all those threads tighten up and pay off (maybe not on their own, but in aid of the central plot).

I would never put it in my top five, or even top ten, sports movies, but I have a soft spot in my heart for "Victory."

Must have watched that thing 100 times on HBO in the 80s.

I mean, where do they get these ideas? It's "The Great Escape," but with a soccer twist, and Sylvester Stallone is a world-class goalkeeper. Ummm, OK? And we'll put Pele and Michael Caine together on the forward line.

David M. Evans Developing The Sandlot 2?
Source: Moviehole

Moviehole tells us that director David M. Evans may be looking to direct a sequel or follow-up to 1993's The Sandlot, which was about a new boy in a 1962 town who joins a baseball team and tries desperately to fit in with the others.

Having checked out "Bad Boys 2" recently, I'm no longer on the whole 'why did they take so long to do a sequel?' train – as Marty Lawrence remarks in the film It's all timing – one thing Bay's super-flick doesn't have, but it's entirely palpable why it's happening now and not prior to. "The Sandlot" – or "The Sandlot Kids" as it was released in some territories – was released some ten years ago, and now, according to Director David Mickey Evans a sequel to it, could be on the cards. The original, about a group of baseball playing kids, didn't make a mint at the box office, so any immediate plans for a sequel were cancelled. However, it ended up having quite a life on video – and therefore Fox are talking to Evans about a second instalment. It's believed talks are underway as we speak. Watch this Space. Good news for fans of the first movie.

Evans also co-wrote the original film with Robert Gunter.

I really wish The Sandlot wouldn't face being ruined by an unnecessary sequel.  The end of the movie tied everything up so nicely, and characters grew up, moved away, had businesses, got married, and died.  The charm of the first was in its existence in its own little universe, and trying to expand that universe, as I can see it right now, will only be counter-productive.

Well, Hoop Dreams doesn't have any real discussion, so I guess this thread works, but my god. Best blind buy ever. It took me about three hours to watch it, but I've never been so hypnotized. It's so beautiful and tragic and hopeful and hopeless. When I read the insert about what happened after the film to the families, I cried more than during the actual movie. It's a complete marvel that this got made at all, and you feel small watching such an ambitious film that essentially takes on life at its rawest. I loved the film beyond words.
