Is she fighting werewolves or vampires???

Either way, this looks wicked awesome, and reminds me of a great comic I used to read called Wetworks.

Premise: Set in the secret nocturnal and supernatural world of vampires and werewolves, two groups that have been at war for centuries, this is the story of a romance between a female vampire warrior, Selene (Beckinsale), who's famous for her strength and werewolf-hunting prowess, and a non-werewolf human, Michael (Speedman), who is being hunted down by the werewolves because he has a unique type of blood that can save their race from extinction.

Quote from: SoNowThenWho's directing?

Director: Len Wiseman (feature film debut)

Director Notes: Len Wiseman got his start working as a prop designer for movies like Independence Day and Stargate, before becoming a director of music videos (as a stepping ground to feature work), making videos for songs by groups like Megadeth and En Vogue.

Screenwriter: Danny McBride (feature debut)

Based Upon: This project is loosely inspired by William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", but in modern times, and with vampires and werewolves instead of the Capulets and Montagues, respectively.

Looks like a good Gothic film.  It reminds of The Crow series.  Is this actress new?  Fresh face.  I am so glad they didn't pick a teen superstar or something.

Kate Beckinsale.  You might know her from Pearl Harbor.

Is this thread void of IMDB?

I've been waiting for Underworld for quite some time. If it can keep itself anchored in the gothic underground type mood I think it will be rather good. Most movies like this mess up and pay attention to the first part of the movie with set designs and cinematography and then devolve into a typical "movie" look. If it keeps the same M.O. as Matrix and Crow I'll be very happy.

This movie looks really great. The trailer looks great.

Twenty bucks says the dialogue & story suck ass.

I can see it now. The director is sitting in a room with some friends.

"You know what? We haven't ever seen a movie with Vampires & Werewolves going at it have we? By GOD! We have to make one. Here is what we'll do:

1. Borrow the look of The Matrix.
2. Write a crappy story about Vampires vs. Werewolves.
3. Use lots of special effects to cover up aweful dialogue.
4. Find a hot girl to dress up in lots of black leather.

Instant target audience!

I saw the preview at the American Wedding movie and I thought it had potential.  My heart sank slightly when I heard the love part and it was what gave this movie its slightly cliche feel.   I don't know, i guess i shouldn't judge.
This movie reminded me so strongly of something but i couldn't put my finger on it when i was watching the preview.  Now i realized it was the Anita Blake novels.  Which dealt with vampires and werewolves living in the same world and having a badass heroine.

I just hope it's more than the Romeo and Juliet set in the gothic horror world that it makes itself out to be.

I hope, but I don't count on it.

has anyone noticed that one shot that is in a lot of the trailers and tv spots where KB leaps in slowmo and lightly lands on the water.  maybe im missing something but that is one of the least visually stimulating shots of the previews but they act like its the "money shot"

?

I think it's to show that she isn't human

but I also think it's badass the way she lands and sort of bounces back into step

Screen Gems Makes Underworld Sequel Deal
Source: Variety

Screen Gems president Clint Culpepper tells Variety a sequel to Underworld, which depicts a centuries-old battle between vampires and werewolves, is already in the works.

"After the way it screened in Toronto, we made the deal," Culpepper said. "They loved it."

We assume a deal was made with director Len Wiseman and the lead stars as well.

I just came from seeing this movie.  The trailer is cooler than the film.  There are a few bad performances in the film (actor who played Kraven), during the climax of the movie there was just a silly special effect added which really didn't work. The filtered look (blues and greys) looks great in the trailer but doesn't work for an entire film.

I was entertained, but I have no urge to ever see it again.

____Small Spoilers here in_____

I loved the action.
I loved the style.
You gotta like Kate Beckinsale in the PVC and Leather!
I felt drawn out, like it could have been 100 minuets long.
Lots of the dialogue was soo forced n crappy.
There was some questionable acting
The writers changed/ignored some of the rules for both the vampires and werewolf's. most importantly (imho) the vampires had reflections, something i saw as a defining characteristic of a vampire and they don't seem to be undead, Selene passes out from blood loss, she doesn't need to be invited to go into Michaels home, she coughs up water (she shouldn't be breathing if she's undead) when she's pulled out of the water and the CGI of the pumping heart (again not if your dead).
the vampires appeared to be humans with pointy teeth and some regenerative properties!
I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't feed on humans any more.

I would watch it again.
But maybe its one of those films which are better with a group of drunk mates.

Get Ready for Underworld 2 & 3!
Source: Variety

Underworld is set to become a trilogy for Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems. Screen Gems has made a deal for Danny McBride and Len Wiseman to write a sequel to the vampire and werewolf thriller, which Wiseman has said he would again direct.

Screen Gems and Lakeshore hope to put the second film into production as soon as possible. A third film, a prequel, could follow. No deal is in place for star Kate Beckinsale, though she has expressed interest in reprising her part.

The first film earned $21.8 million last weekend, Screen Gems' best opening for a film ever.

this movie was so blah.  by the last 20 minutes i was just like END ALREADY!  not that i was expecting much.  i thought it might be a little cheesier than it was, but that might have made it a little fun.  it took itself way too seriously and just wasnt very entertaining.  such a fun concept though.  oh well.

I kinda had the same reaction to this movie as I did with "League of Extraordinary Fuckos." I was expecting bad, but it really wasn't. It was an alright action flick, but it did owe a lot to "The Matrix". I didn't mind the blue hue cinematography. The CGI and make-up effects were very well done, not calling attention to themselves and done sporatically. Kate Beckinsale was very good in this action role. The camera adored her, whether firing the guns or even with the looks through her hair over her face. She was worth watching. Wish I could say the same for the guy playing Kraven, but his acting was one note, heavy breathing and yelling through his teeth.
