Title: Your First DVD
Post by: MacGuffin on July 20, 2003, 02:51:06 PM
"You never forget your first."

What DVD did you first buy and break your player's cherry with? And why that title?

I was all set to get "The Sweet Hereafter" on laserdisc at Virgin Records when I looked at the DVD copy and saw it had more extras than just the commentary. I went down the street and got a player and that DVD (along with "Boogie Nights"- when only the single-disc edition was out - because it had a different commentary track than the Criterion laser) that same day.

Hmm, never noticed it until now but there'll all Fox DVDs. COINCIDENCE?!?

Contact. I loved that movie, I actually bought it way before I bought my player, because I knew there was no point to buying vhs anymore. I isn't loaded with features like some discs nowadays, but it was still a very exciting thing when dvd was first coming out.

and it was november of 1998, a week or two before my birthday i believe.  (which is sad, because recently i had to let it go in favor of the criterion one. although i did consider holding on to it for sentimental value.)

the problem i had with the invention of DVDs was that i had a rather large (at the time) collection of about 100 vhs.  so my dilemma was what would i buy on dvd?  and what on tape?  and what would i re-buy?  so i decided, that first of all, i would buy on dvds new movies that were being released, that supported my newer tastes anyways.  and movies that would benefit from a better quality.  and in order for my to re-buy any of my vhs, they would have to be stacked with features.  otherwise, wait it out.  (which i have kept until recently when i broke down and re-bought barton fink although it doesnt have very much on it.)

I can never for the life of me remember what my first was, but my first three were: Badlands, Days Of Heaven, Leaving Las Vegas.  I didn't even have a fucking DVD player at the time, I seriously just bought them to watch on other people's...

When I finally got my own DVD player, my parents gave me the Reservoir Dogs DVD for Christmas (the first edition)...

I got the first disc back when I was 12 and pokemon was hot shit and I was amazed that there could be such an interesting animated series as Lain... I didn't get to see the rest of the series for a couple years though, but I really enjoyed it... the music's great too. I recently watched evangelion, though, and Lain is kind of a rip-off of the ideas from there, but it's still a great series on it's own.

Ghostbusters.

One Christmas, my parents got me a dvd player and some discs. This was the first one I popped in. Watched commentary right off the bat, if I remember correctly.

I recall going out on boxing day and getting Reservoir Dogs, Casino, and Boogie Nights -- my top three movies at the time. So cool.

Boogie Nights single disc an Criterion edition of The Killer. Unfortunaltely, I hadn't bought a player yet and I had the wonderful idea of getting a DVD-rom which my old computer could not really use : the TV-out didn't work and the playback slowed down each time there was movement in the shot (which made the viewing of the opening of BOogie Nights a real pain...)

First DVD was Out of Sight and I'll never forget the excited tingle that went through my body when the Universal title card appeared. I'd never seen a picture quality like it outside of cinemas. (You got to remember I was the first person in my circle of friends to buy a player, so up until that point I'd never actually seen just how good DVD picture quality could be. I'd never seen a laserdisc, so it was all new to me). I knew from that moment that I was going to be spending A LOT of money on DVDs in the coming years.

The day my DVD player arrived I went out and got:

in 2 for £20 sale

The Cell - I was told it was pretty messed up
American Beauty - It was so good at the cinema I had to own it
Way of the Gun - blind buy, it had gun in the title and back of the box made it sound badass.
Bring it on - Blind buy, the cheerleaders on the front drew me in!

I think I played bring it on first and I too was so impressed with the picture and sound quality that I knew I was gonna be buying a few more DVDs! (I’ve just tipped 250 disks) it was the format that made me a film geek! For the first time I could see a clean clear picture and hear everything!

Do you mean manga, like, comic books?  Or do you mean anime?

My first anime DVD was... Lain, I think.  I can't remember.  It might have been Fatal Fury: The Movie, which is pretty sweet.  I sold it to a friend.  I need to pick that one up again.

Sorry to drive this slightly OT, but I highly recommend Patlabor WXIII - The Movie (Ultimate Edition 3-Disc Set) if you're looking for some unique new anime.  The extra DVDs are VERY entertaining.

If you watch enough manga and anime, then you'll soon see the difference. Some people call Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Beyblade anime, if you compare that to say Ninja Scrolls (manga), then it's a huge difference.
But, hey, thats my opinion.

Yes that is true that manga is from a company, (palm pictures). I just like manga. And to me, maybe not others, but theres a difference.
I'm trying to collecet all the manga, sigh, taking ages to find them all.
It's all anime art though.
Title: Your First DVD
Post by: markums2k on July 25, 2003, 02:40:33 PM
Geez, here's your definitive answer:

Manga: PRINTED Japanese comics.

Anime: Animation with an Asian flavor.

Ninja Scroll, the animated feature, is NOT 'manga', it is anime, but it's possible to adapt an anime from manga.  Manga-based.  Manga-inspired.  Whatever.

Some people label EVERYTHING 'anime'.  In that case, the term anime is generally accepted as an abbreviation of the term 'anime-style'.  Pokemon and Ninja Scroll are both anime, all the same.

There is a terrible U.S. company that dubs and distributes anime that adopted the name 'Manga', but it really holds no relevance to anything.  End of conversation.

The first DVD I bought was back in December of '98: Babe. That great flick about the fat talking pig that makes friends with other barn yard animals and becomes a champion sheep herder. The story of my life. Actually, I wish. Life as a barn yard animal seems so appealing. No McDonalds, no garbage polluting our society like 7th Heaven, no Big Macs, or soggy cheeseburgers, just a warm life sleeping in the grass with the bugs looking at the skies. Whenever you're uncomfortable outside, James Cromwell will invite you in, and his fat wife will make you a sandwich. You could piss on the grass without getting weird looks, or run around nude in the sun with all your animal friends. It's a big brotherhood. How could you not love to live as an animal on hoggets farm? Can anyone tell me why they don't love this flick? I sold the DVD and I'm probably going to buy it when they release a widescreen supersized edition.

The first DVDs I received as gifts were the two-disc special editions for Citizen Kane and Singin' in the Rain, and Young Frankenstein. The first DVD I bought myself was the special edition for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Gotta love their Japanese version with English subtitles.

back in the year 2001, I picked up the Rushmore bare bones disc because it was on sale for 17.99, and sitting in the rack right behind it was the Rushmore Criterion disc for (oh my God!) 17.99 also!  The year 2000 has since become infamous for being a year with a lot of mistakes made, and I took advantage of one of them  This was my first DVD, and hoping that lightning would strike twice, I walked over to the silence of the lambs bare bones disc and looked behind it.  No Criterion though, just a movie starring Patrcik Swayze that cost more than the aforementioned Silence of the the Lambs (!), and thats a tale for another day!

To continue this thread's display of strange coincidences, I, like Onomatopoeia, received American Beauty and Fight Club as birthday presents and thus began my little collection.
