Something I thought of while PMing today...
please post some movie titles that deal with this. But no happy endings please. Nothing where the guy gets the object of his affection. Are there any really good ones where it's just prevailing sadness on the part of the guy? None are coming to my mind right now...
I guess, maybe, All The Real Girls might fit, but he at least got the girl for a little while, and she actually loved him, so ...hmmm... it doesn't quite count.
Can anyone think of any??

Hmm, then I will have to watch.
But anything more 20-somethingish... and closer to a non-plotted film?
Edward Scissorhands
George Washington (w/ Buddy and Nasia)
Jungle Fever
Almost Famous
The Virgin Suicides
Requiem for a Dream
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Adaptation
I'll second All the Real Girls too...probably the best example I can think of.
I want to say Leaving Las Vegas. Definitely not a happy ending... :)
There's Something About Mary :-P
Leaving Las Vegas isn't about the woman, though. She's just along for his last ride.
actually, yeah, I just re-watched it a couple days ago, can't believe I didn't think of that one...
Leaving Las Vegas is almost perfect, except that Sara loved Ben. We need one where the chick doesn't give two shits about the guy...
I have to disagree. There was a love there (however fragile); boiled down they really cared for each other.
so i guess this whole thread will be spoilerful. i don't think i'll be checking this one for replies.
for my part, i'll say Age of Innocence. and that's that.

Hey, what about Luke Wilson and Gwenyth Paltrow in Tennenbaums?
Chasing Amy
Two Girls and a Guy

Two Girls and a Guy
That doesn't quite count, because the guys in those two films actually did 'score' with the women, even if later on in those films they ended up pining for them....
Exactly.
And yeah, Tenenbaums is a good example.
I keep telling people to see this movie, and they never do, but if you want a movie that fits exactly with what you described, for the love of god see "Waking the Dead".
Thanks for the tip. :)

I will check it out.
But I don't think anybody has fit exactly what I asked. I guess I haven't made myself really clear: I mean a totally realistic type of movie where a regular single guy falls in love with a beautiful girl, but she NEVER returns his love, and at the end of the movie is still lonely and sad, and feeling like his life cannot be complete without her. No one dies, no one comes alive again, they never get married, they never fuck. She just doesn't give a shit about him, in that sorta way.
I realize it might be kinda boring, but I just wanna know if such a film exists.
If there is one, it would be VERY hard to find. I can't think of any like that.
Lara Flynn Boyle to Phil Hoffman in Happiness.
Jean Seberg to Jean-Paul Belmondo in Breathless.
Colette to Antoine in Antoine and Colette.
well, if tenenbaums counts...
RUSHMORE (max and mrs. cross)
THE APARTMENT (although the ending is happy, the whole movie is pretty downbeat.)
CASABLANCA
GONE WITH THE WIND
ANNIE HALL

Nope, none of those really fits, except maybe Max in Rushmore... and I suppose Hoffman in Happiness. But still...

You're sure Colette and Antoine don't fit your bill??
Haven't seen yet. If so, I will be very VERY happy.
My box set is shipping for free from Amazon.ca, so I gotta wait a bit...
umm, do you need someone to talk to? :(
uhh GREAT EXPECTATIONS (Cuaron) is a good story of longing and all that, but they do get together in the last few minutes. but that'll be good for you. its 2 hours of misery and a few seconds of hope.
Which is exactly why I will NEVER watch that. Because the book is just like that, minus the 2 bullshit minutes. And that's why it is one of my favorites of all time.

i had to watch this in driver's ed. my driver's ed teacher kicked ass, and so does this movie.
what about that movie Heavy, with Liv Tyler?
That's the one I was trying to think of! That was an odd movie. Good, but what a strange protagonist.

Not at all man. I would fucking love to see a movie that was about that and nothing else...I'd love to make one like that just the same. That wouldn't be boring at all for me.
Lol, you sounded exactly like Charlie Kaufman in that paragraph...just a little more correct.
Kaufman to a T
I finally found one: Il Posto.
