Art Murphy, longtime Variety editor and writer, passed away. He also taught at USC. He also wrote film reviews for Variety. I think he was highly underrated as a critic. Go back and read volumes of old Variety film reviews (the volumes go back to 1907). Murphy wrote reviews from the mid-60's until the late 70's. Back in the 70's, he would review X-Rated films alongside major studio releases. No matter what film he reviewed, he always had something insightful to say, and he wrote in a concise style that cut to the core of something without oversimplifying things. As far as I'm concerned, he's as good as Kael or Schickel, and nobody seems to know or care about his work. Time to lift him from obscurity.
When did he die?
