How can they not pick FunkyTown !!!!!!!!!!
I've always liked Nirvana and all, but nowadays when I hear somebody talk about them being great I automatically think "shut the fuck up dumbass"
either way, I don't think that should have been #1
Wait, why is this not in the music forum? I'm moving it now
Its not even the best song on Nevermind, let alone the best song in the past 25 years.
I think they are talking more about the way it changed so much, but even then...
Nirvana Song Called Best of Past 25 Years
NEW YORK - Here they are now, entertaining us - or at least entertaining VH1, which named Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the greatest song of the past quarter-century. The Seattle band's groundbreaking grunge anthem is No. 1 on VH1's list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the Past 25 Years."
The whole countdown will air over five nights, starting at 10 p.m. EDT Monday on the video music channel. The series will feature clips of videos and performances by the artists along with interviews from musicians and celebrities discussing why the songs matter.
Of "Smells Like Teen Spirit," Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan said: "That was really a breakthrough for a great scene that had been going on for a long time up in Seattle. And it was kind of another victory, I think, for a misunderstood music, you know. The dam broke when 'Teen Spirit' came out."
While no one performer or group dominated the countdown, which was chosen by a panel of VH1 executives, several had two songs featured.
Michael Jackson had the second-highest song, "Billie Jean," and was at No. 40 with "Beat It." Eminem reached No. 4 with "Lose Yourself," while his "My Name Is" was No. 85. Madonna's "Like a Virgin" was No. 10 and her "Ray of Light" was No. 100.
Rounding out the top 10 were "Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns N' Roses, "One" by U2, "Walk This Way" by Run-D.M.C., "When Doves Cry" by Prince, "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston and "Every Breath You Take" by The Police.
In May 2001, VH1 picked the 100 greatest videos of all time; Jackson's "Thriller," a 17-minute mini-movie, was No. 1, but it didn't even make the list this time.
Psshht. VH-1 putting anything at the top of one of their many myopic lists (always slanted heavily towards hits that were hits as VIDEOS) means nothing to me. Enjoy watching the lists, but if there was any way to put less than ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NO stock in them, I would.
i still cant get over funkytown not getting voted, im shattered

i can rattle off a list of things that are ruined by certain people
but ohh well you just do your best to move on
now i am going back into mourning over funkytown, :: starts to sing "goodtime charlies got the blues" ::
I wish it weren't so
Seriously, who are they ?! Who the fuck are they ??! This makes me so mad, because I'm sure a lot of "confidence fragile" people live by these fucking lists VH1 and the AFI give every now and then. Who the hell thinks he's important enough to select the "best" songs of the last 25 years ? I hope it's fucking Mother Theresa or something, and not the pop-culture enlightened, rich, snob, bastard who runs this VH1 thing. Oh, and they don't give you a 100 songs list...nooo...they put them in order of greatness, so you don't get confused in your tastes, so you can really be sure what you have to like more.
-"This one will be 84.
-ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND ?! This is definietly 78 material !"
It's degrading when they do that about movies, even more with songs.

Is that a cruel joke ? What has the world become... art for the masses has disapeared. The spirit in the mass culture has completly gone dry. Fuck, in the 60's, the 70's, the 80's and even the fucking 90's pop had some kind of meaning. Now its..."what I like about 50 cents is that he got shot. I agree with VH1's conclusion, namely because I can't think of a better replacement for the most influential ass kicking song from the past 25 years.
It's certainly not Nirvana's best song, but it is the most immediately representative of them, and since they definitely deserve to be at the top of the list, I'm fine with that being the song of choice.
Its so sad that popular music mainly for critical acclaim (awards shows and such) translates into what is the most popular getting that respect. Every single art form does this when thinking of its business, but music seems most connected to the money than the others. I don't mind Nirvana's song winning this award, but it should be under the banner of "Most Influential" instead. I think of a world of other songs when thinking of the best and I know at best, 1% of them may actually be on this list.
~rougerum
While I don't agree that's the best song in the last 25 years, the only reason I'm not completely pissed is because of this:
Bohemian Rhapsody, written by Queen, 1975.

Wonderwall.
No matter what you think of Oasis, you gotta admit it's a great song.

I'm afraid I really have to disagree, man. Maybe it's just being British and having had it smeared over my aural consciousness for so long. It's actually one of my most hated songs of all time. And I've heard Gallagher talk about how he wrote it: he said, I paraphrase, "I was playing E minor, but with two fingers on the highest two strings, and I thought 'Fuck: why don't I leave those two fingers there while I change chords?' So I did, I left those little bitches there, and it sounded fucking ACE."
Actually, I hate Oasis, but I do like that song

You gotta love that. The man just ain't pretentious. Personally, I feel Oasis is responsible for keeping rock alive, through it's tough spots in the late 90's. Now the younger bands will take the torch, but they all sight Oasis (and Noel particularily) as a massive inspiration.
But I knew most people would freak out when I said Wonderwall. It's certainly not anymore ludicrous than naming the Nirvana song as the "Best in the last 25 years".
HAhahaha YES it is
I should just bow out now.
But seriously, naming ANY song the "Best" is fucking ludicrous. So my opinion carries exactly as much weight as any of yours...
If the list contains "Once in a Lifetime," by Talking Heads, I'll give it its props. Perhaps the best pop song I've ever heard.
Hey, are the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK" or "God Save the Queen" within the 25-year range?

I remember I first heard that song around 4th or 5th grade and I couldn't stop thinking about it all day it school

Not that I have an opinion, but yes, I think it is. :P
I totally agree with all of you saying Teen Spirit shouldn't be on the top. I think it's a great song (though far far from their best) and Nirvana's my favourite band, and had it been 100 Most Important Songs, it definitely should've been on top. But (but!) it's not, and Raikus, you have no idea of how right you are in saying Bohemian Rhapsody should be there, right at the top. Damn that song is... beyond words. But 25 years, damn.

Yes, so good. Be Here Now in its entirety is just a perfect fucking example of wonderful rock and roll excess. Blissfully huge. Love it.
And all their b-sides are great as well. Particularily Talk Tonight.
It is pointless to argue about what should be on the list. The list should just not exist.

They're not, no. Sex Pistols year of brith was my year of birth, and I'm no longer 25, so...
I like "Once in a Lifetime" more these days than I ever did for a very long time. David Byrne rubs me the wrong way sometimes.
Quote from: BoothIt is pointless to argue about what should be on the list. The list should just not exist.
I sort of agree. At least, nobody should put any stock in the list or think it means anything.
Unless their fav song is number one. In that case, defend it like crazy. That's what I would do.

God yes - on the Godzilla soundtrack if I remember. Bad idea, stealing Kashmir. I really hate that. Like 2Pac with Bruce Hornsby and the Range's "The Way It Is." Ahhhh! AFI lists suck ass, there isn't "the greatest film ever created" set on some stone that says Citizen Kane falling from the heavens and they automatically must be classified as classics. Same as VH1 countdowns. Though they can be interesting - heh like with Jim Morrison and John Lennon in some of them.

Fuck man, Wonderwall is great. Not their best in my opinion, but great. I mean, Oasis kicks ass. Much of their music is very similiar to and influential in Radiohead music (of course there is the whole English thing). But excellent, excellent band. somebody asked liam back in 98 what he thought of radiohead

yeah but that line about them being students, sums it up pretty darn well

liam is a working class guy, and he looks at radiohead as being a bunch of pretenous middle class college students
you could see why "he" would think that, i just dont see him in 1998 anyway being a big radiohead fan, since he hated blur and all they stood for .
now maybe in the past few years he may have become a fan i dunno
the reason i said he in quotes was to show that i was speaking for him and not anyone else you me or anyone else .
my disgust with radiohead has more to do with their fans, its no differnt then johnny rotten walking around london at the height of dark side of the moon mania with a " I hate pink floyd" t shirt

This may be true, but it doesn't mean there aren't heavy influences. Furthermore, you must consider that the brothers are quite inflamatory.
Missing Smashing Pumpkins, Elvis Costello, Weezer, The Smiths...and many, many, many, others.

Gallagher brothers are such good quotes. Upon arriving at an American music festival a few years ago, Liam was asked "What do you thinkof the other bands playing here?" To which he answered "rubbish, all of 'em". The reporter: "Pearl Jam?", Liam: "... rubbish".
Classic.
Noel has had some great ones too, not the least of which was wishing Aids on Damon and Alex from Blur, and saying that members of the British Government were heroin addicts.
* I realize this probably will offend someone here, but c'mon, these are much more entertaining than normal bullshit interviews. It's pretty fucking funny.*

Well said man. "Smells Like..." is not the song I'd call the best in the past 25 years....that's just ridiculous. I think the implications that the song
caused on the music scene were quite powerful (knocked the King of Pop on his ass) and warrant a somewhat grandiose title....

I agree that "Teen Spirit," while great, is not the best song of the past 25 years.
But Nirvana were possibly the only really interesting band from Seattle's "grunge" scene that made it big. They were the only one I really liked, anyways. Mudhoney were okay, I guess. I cannot abide anything about Pearl Jam. To me, they're the antithesis of what nineties music was, and it was so spectacular in so many ways. They're dull, dull, dull.
I liked Hole better than either band. And I always preferred the Olympia stuff, myself.
By the way, I live here now, and the Seattle music scene is SO DEAD. Portland is where it's at. Sleater-Kinney, Dandy Warhols, etc. So much more interesting than the embers of the anti-artifice, subpar-pop Seattle thing.
