Title: I just saw "Hard Eight"
Post by: ShanghaiOrange on June 05, 2003, 03:43:49 PM
PTA - A SERIES OF WORDS THAT ARE NOT A Haiku
I've seen all four movies now
I now realize this:
Paul is good at making films.

EDIT: I fixed the haiku, you pirate smokers. :(

SECOND EDIT: :(

Listen to the commentary so you can hear PTA tell Phillip Baker Hall that he walks "like a motherfucker."

I just saw Hard Eight for the first time last week.  Is the DVD worth the purchase?  I did enjoy the movie although it doesn't seem to have the replay value of his other films.
How is the commentary?

If I had to exclude one of the four DVDs, I would exclude this one. Luckily, though, I don't; I plan to order my copy to arrive in plenty of time for the P.T.A.-a-thon.

ShanghaiOrange can't
Write haikus very well, but
his avatar's cool.

Hard Eight is worth it.
It's Anderson's first real film.
I liked JCR.

Actually, I think this DVD is as valuable as the others. The two commentary tracks are priceless. Plus, the film's just so damn good!

The DVD is great.  And it does have the replay value of his other masterpieces.

Absolutely.  The dialogue is sheer brilliance.  And I love the utterly concise manner in which he set up the John/Sydney friendship in the diner (the first scene....)
Sydney is one of my top five faves......

I don't fucking care
The point was that I like Paul
Haikus are worthless

:(

Anyway, I listened to the commentary on this and I must say that PTA sounds alot like Tarantino in both his voice and his enthusiasm for film. He drops the f-bomb more often though. :(
I really liked the commentary, but I admit that I zoned out alot when Phillip Baker Hall was talking. :(

Haha, excellent haiku, Shanghai!  :-D

And yes, PTA does swear a lot.  And PBH has a lulling, smooth voice that can put ya to sleep.  But for my money, PTA and Tarantino are the two best people to listen to commentaries/interviews for, so yeah, admission price for that alone is worth it.  :)

I was very surprised when i first saw this, i dont even remember when, but its really nice to see a film that just fits together nicely.

The relationship of John and Sydney was well done bc you had no idea why this man took John under his wing until the end. i had no idea that was coming, and if you say you did then you're a fucking liar!!! like those who say they knew Willis was dead the entire time.

Anyways, great film and one that everyone should view at least once.

I didn't pay much attention to PSH the first time around, either...but give it a second shot. He gives some REALLY valuable thoughts on the directing process, and on working with actors.

"Hard Eight" is the most underrated film of all time. It was released in  Feburary of 1997 in limited release. This is the kind of film that should have gotten multiple Oscar nominations and should have won them all. The problem is always with the audience. Most people do not want to see a brilliant character study, they want to see a dumb teenage comedy or a loud action-packed film. It's a shame that hidden treasures like "Hard Eight" are missed so often and so easily. But it's a film critics job to encourage filmmakers and audiences to make and see better movies. Philip Baker Hall is the greatest actor working in film today. He is also the most underrated because he's been in so many small roles and has had only two leading roles that really showed his talent. In 1984, he gave one of the great performances in "Secret Honor". Although the film wasn't even released into theatres in the United States, many critics saw it at film festivals. Now almost 10 years later, Philip Baker Hall has given another great performance in "Hard Eight". Maybe 10 years down the line, we'll get to see give another great performance in another great movie. But you can see him as Jim Carrey's boss in "Bruce Almighty" which is now in theatres. He has a small role, but most of his roles are.

But we will always know he's the best!

I'd say Punch-Drunk is the least cool of Paul's dvds. There's nothing that cool on it, I'm very dissapointed. At least Hard Eight has got some great commentary tracks.
