Title: The XIXAX.COM P.T. Anderson Home Film Festival
Post by: Xixax on June 04, 2003, 06:58:42 PM
HOW IT WORKS: Just before 10PM Eastern time during the 4 days of the P.T. Anderson Home Film Festival, participants will congregate in the Xixax.Com Chat Room. You can join the chat by clicking on the "chat" button on top of any page at Xixax.Com. Then, at precisely 10pm, everyone present in the chat room will begin watching that day's featured film on either DVD or VHS. While the movie plays, "home film festival" participants will discuss their favorite parts of that evening's movie - as it occurs.

FILM SCHEDULE:
(all films will begin with a "cue" given in the chat room at approximately 10pm Eastern / 7pm Pacific)
June 21: "Sydney" (a.k.a. "Hard Eight")
June 22: "Boogie Nights"
June 23: "Magnolia"
June 24: "Punch Drunk Love"

QUESTIONS:
I don't have (film name). Can I still participate? If you don't have some of the movies we're going to watch, there's probably still time for you to purchase, rent or borrow them. If you don't have that evening's feature, that's still OK. Everyone is welcome, whether you're watching the film with us or not.
I don't understand. Are you watching the movies online? No. That would be public exhibition, which would be illegal. The way it works is that everyone watches DVD or VHS of the films in their own home, on their own TV, in their own DVD player or VCR. The films can't be shown online legally.
You're a freak. Why are you doing this? Because someone at xixax.com suggested it, and I thought it would be a lot of fun.
I still think you're a freak. OK then.
Why P.T. Anderson? Punch Drunk Love is coming out on the final day of the festival! If this goes well, we'll do it again soon with someone else.

CHAT TECHNICAL STUFF: The chat area can be joined with our Java applet by clicking on "chat" at the top of the page. You'll need to have Java enabled in your web browser in order for this to work. Also, if you're behind a firewall, you may need to poke a hole for port 6667 in order to connect. Those familiar with IRC can join via any IRC client program by joing to room #xixax on server blazoner.com at port 6667.

See you there!

sounds great.....but...

(cough, cough)  any suggestions as to how we can get our Mac friends in on this excursion?????   Is IRC just not Mac compliant, or are they (and me) just fools???

Hey guys, the chat DOES work on Macintosh. You just have to have java enabled.

If you can't get the Java thing to work, then download a Mac IRC program like Ircle.

Mac guys, check here:

http://www.ex.ac.uk/~jastaple/irc/irchelp.html

You'll need this info to log in:

IRC server: blazoner.com
room: #xixax
port: 6667

With that info, you can chat with us that night. I'd hate for you Mac guys to all miss out!

I don't have a computer in the same room as my TV, so I'm going to chat via my cell phone!  8)

I suppose other areas of the world could arrange times to do the same thing since the chat area is always open.

But I don't think PDL will be available everywhere yet.

I'm exceptionally excited about this.  I just started dating this girl I met at work, and I'm forcing her to watch these films with me.  Or else.  :-D

How romantic.  ;)  Although, I guess her response to Punch-Drunk Love can really gauge what kind of relationship it'll be.  Or at least what kind of person she is.

EDIT: And wow, that banner is brilliant.  Excellent job.

I will not join any of you guys in the chat. Perhaps before and after, but I don't like distractions during the show. I'll kick back with a can of soda (maybe orange soda.. actually maybe water because my doctor told me I have a high blood pressure --- which means that I have to go to fast food less (it'll never happen), actually maybe fruit punch, but punch is generally high on sugar too. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I should drink? Don't tell me alcohol because I don't drink alcohol. Why? because I'm 99.9 % sure if I start drinking alcohol regularly, I will become an addict. There are some things you just know, and I'm sure I will become an alcoholic. Best way to cure my addiction is to not start.), and pillow.

Wait, isn't this the movie confessions thread? I guess not. Oh well.

Just love that banner.

I'm getting him the P>D>L> with a 20% discount!!!!!!
I can get P.D.L. early too, but I better not or I'll be fired....

I ordered PDL through Amazon last night. It's anybody's guess as to whether it'll be here in time for me to participate in the viewing, though.

At least I do have the other three.

I think this is going to be fun!

Oh, man. That would have been rich.

I should have made the banner with hugeass black bars across the top and bottom. Didn't even occur to me.

When you do a Google image search, you take what you can get, know what I'm sayin?

Are they all mint? I probably could have taken better care of my Magnolia one, it's in really great condition but it's a little messed up on the edge of the spine.

How is the PDL dvd by the way? Best one yet? Better than BN? How is it? Is there any outtakes, behind the scenes, or making of footage at all?

That's a funny and great idea, I think! I will join you of course!
To me everything's perfect! I have a computer, a TV and a DVD-Player in my room! The only problem is that "Punch-Drunk Love" will be released in Germany a couple of months later. But I will be there with "Sydney", "Boogie Nights" and "Magnolia".

But I have a little bit problems with the time.
What time will it be in Germany when the Festival begins?

Oh shit. That's really bad. I can't stand up at 3am, watch a film, chat with you guys and then go to school the next day. SHIT!!!
Can't we make a festival for europeans?
But I don't know if "PDL" is coming out on the same day in whole Europe on DVD.

What's the chances of Xixax or someone posting a full transcript of the chat for us Europeans to read after the event? I'd love to stay up and take part, but somehow I don't think I'll last the distance.
Title: Pal
Post by: Matze247 on June 12, 2003, 12:05:42 PM
I think the PAL version is  4% shorter, because of the 25 fps.
The Europeans will run out of sync
Title: Re: Pal
Post by: Spike on June 12, 2003, 12:24:13 PM
But when you got the films on DVD you can normally change the format from PAL into NCST (or how is the Code-1 format called?)
Title: Re: Pal
Post by: Spike on June 12, 2003, 12:31:26 PM
So, does anyone want to make an European P.T. Anderson Home Film Festival? Perhaps a couple of weeks later than the American one.
Or we could make it, when "PDL" is released in whole Europe.

Post by: Xixax on June 20, 2003, 06:44:22 PM
OK, guys. Here are some step-by-step instructions on how to connect to the chat. Quote this multiple times from now on out if anyone asks about how to connect:

1: Click on the "chat" button at the top of any xixax.com page. You must be LOGGED IN TO XIXAX.COM IN ORDER FOR THIS BUTTON TO APPEAR. A new window will open up. If within a couple of minutes your box does not look like this:
then proceed to step #2. Otherwise, skip to step 3. DO NOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW!

2: The fact that the java applet isn't loading could indicate that you do not have the Java Virtual Machine installed on your computer. You MUST have this in order to run this chat software, or any other java-based progam. Make sure this is installed by going to http://www.java.com and clicking on "download". Their web site will walk you through the installation process from there. After the Java virtual machine is installed, then come back here and re-try step #1. If it still doesn't work, then try another (or a friend's) computer.

3: Click on the "connect" button shown in step #1. A new box will appear that looks like this:
Eventually, this window (known as the "status window") will connect to the server, and a third window will appear. This sometimes takes a minute or two, particularly if you are behind a firewall or are using devices such as wireless routers or other networking items that may not readily pass through all ports. If you are behind a firewall, you may not be able to connect at all. The chat server communicates on port 6667, so poke a hole in your firewall if necessary. Instructions for firewall configuration go beyond the scope of this document. Once you have connected, DO NOT CLOSE EITHER OF THE OTHER WINDOWS THAT HAVE APPEARED SO FAR.

4: The new window that will appear is your actual chat window, and it will look like this:
Once you see the green window, you are fully connected and can chat with other users.

5: To use the chat program, there are three things you need to know:
5a: This area lists the people that are currently in the chat room:

5b: This area is where the conversation takes place.

5c: This area is where you type in the text you want to say. When you press "enter" or "return", it will be "spoken" into the chat room.

6: There are other things you can do, too, by using the drop-down menus in the chat window. Play around. You won't hurt anything.

And, for those IRC gurus who want to use their own chat clients to connect, use the following settings:

server: blazoner.com
port: 6667
channel: #xixax
