Title: the DVD that you're most ashamed to own
Post by: dufresne on May 16, 2003, 04:01:20 PM
it just sits there, nestled between The Godfather Collection and 8 1/2 and I can't, for the life of me, understand what possessed me to buy it.

Pearl Harbor

Practical Magic.

It's not mine. It's my fiance's. But still, that damn movie looks so out of place in the collection.

That's nothing. On my shelf, between Speaking Parts and Stardust Memories, you will find:

-Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
-Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
-Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Cones

...now, these TECHNICALLY belong to my partner; I gave them to him as Xmas presents. But since we co-own and co-shelve the DVD collection, I suppose I have to 'fess up and take half the shame.

These titles make me shudder, especially the Star Wars ones.

My friend bought me Another Day In Paradise. But I fucking hate it so much, it wasn't allowed to sit on the shelf with the rest of the dvds, so I stuck it in a drawer until I sold it.

So right now I'd say the only bad movie I have is What About Bob, which I own just for the part where Dreyfus freaks out and yells getaaahellouttaaacarr!!!!

It's my favorite Larry Clark, but that's not really saying much. I thought Kids was barely okay, and I really hated Bully. Tulsa is superior to any of his films. His images are much more effective when the people aren't moving and talking, I guess.

"Body of Evidence," starring Madonna.  It's pure wank material.  I was red faced just bringing it up to the check out counter at Best Buy.

However, first feature role for one Ms. Julianne Moore...  Or wait. Was that Hand That Rocks the Cradle? Anyways, I think you get to see her haul off and slap Madonna across the face. Worth the price of admission to me.

I'm not really embarassed about any of my DVDs...but there are some where I feel odd having them, when I'm missing so many classics. But before I had as many bills, when I would want to see a movie, I'd just buy it instead of renting it. So I've ended up with a lot of stuff like, say, Conspiracy Theory (that one makes the least since), that I'll probably never watch again. For some reason, I don't want to get rid of them, though.

First off, what about bob is awesome.

secondly, i bought plump fiction, a parody of the hip directors in the mid to late 90's starring julie brown. ugh... i don't know why i haven't tried to sell this on ebay yet.

also, i bought a 3D movie, because i thought it would be fun. i'm not ashamed to own it, but it's hidden away.

i also own mystery men. but there were parts i remember being funny. i haven't seen it since i bought it though.

what can I say though...I love it.  I love some of the deaths, I love the campiness and I love the Jump to a Death feature.

Plus there is a Many Lives of Jason Voorhees feature with Mark and Mike from American Movie.

deep blue sea

the performances are suitably cheesy (with thomas jane and saffron burrows doing their indie best at being action heroes), the shark attacks are well orchestrated by harlin...and the various twists of who-dies -next-adds an originality to the overall movie...   anyway, i love it.  i'm secure with it being there on my shelf.  but the fact that other people tease me for owning may have given me my dvd insecurity problems.  what would freud say?

Eh, I own the Dune TV mini-series by the Sci-Fi channel - not the special edition.

I've never seen the entire thing. I bought it after reading the book, having never watched it when it was on TV, and I've never finished it.

that show is awesome. chris elliott as the paperboy. it was my dads favorite show when it was on.   charlie kauffman was a writer on it, and it had the REM song "Stand" as the theme.  you are now elevated to AWESOME in my book. :)

I had no idea Kauffman was a writer on that show! The show was so freaking bizarre and hilarious. My college roomate and I missed classes left and right and only rarely turned in term papers, but we ALWAYS made sure we were right on time for watching "Get A Life" in the dorm room.

I love the episode were he gets married, cheated on and divorced all in the same day.

Yes, yes, the choreographer saved the movie so it could be watchable for me.

Anyone ashamed of What About Bob should be ashamed of being ashamed.  Same goes for UHF.

The only DVD set I ever just had to dump was The Transformers: Season 1.  Hadn't seen any of those episodes in over 10 years, and I remember them being so great... but they aren't.  Thank goodness for Ebay.  I'm avoiding the rest of the TV series and sticking with the movie.

well, i'm bitter for sure, but i don't know how it would affect this movie.

i just found the name-calling stuff with the kid to be not at all funny, and don't like to see dreyfus play such a one sided "bad guy" type character. i know that's expecting lots from a fluff comedy, but still, it annoyed me.

except for the part where he has bob committed, then he gets called to come back and pick him up, and he's all pissed, and bob won't shut up, so he says the "getouddathecar...." scream that is all garbled. that part kills me...
