I'll agree with everything but those two. I think
Traffic's all right, but overrated.
Moulin Rouge- or any of Luhrmann's films- I just can't stand.
I understand. Neither film is for everyone, much more so Rouge. Love or hate, hit or miss.
The way I argue the case of Moulin Rouge with anyone who hated it with a passion is this. I don't try to convince them to like it, because I don't think that can be done. I just try to get them to acknowledge that Luhrmann has, for better or worse, reinvented the movie musical [you can see it in Chicago, and it has opened doors for all these new musicals to come out also] and in that respect, although they may hate the movie, they can appreciate that it is a very important film in terms cinematic history. Which I think it is.
You see? Or not?
Nice list, The Silver Bullet.. Unfortunately, I don't think you have the facts correct. Chicago was in production long before Moulin Rouge!
Not in production. It was in pre-production long before Moulin Rouge. It didn't get the green light until after Rouge was released.
Or so is my understanding of the matter.

Moulin Rouge hit screens in August 2001. Chicago started production (filming) in December 2001. Draw your own conclusions.
Indeed.
Chicago was in the planning stages for a long while, it needed something to give it a nudge, and the success [in saying success, I mean the fact that it was even released in the first place] of Rouge was one of the factors in Miramax's greenlighting the project.

Reasonable enough. Entirely apart from the quality of the films,
Chicago- which I liked- probably got made because of the commercial success of Luhrmann's film.
Entirely aside from the quality of the films. 'Zactly.
I think 2000 was a great year.
-almost famous
-george washington
-meet the parents
-o brother, where art thou?
-remember the titans (underrated.)
-traffic
-wonder boys

I really like your list Silver Bullet...don't know why, I just love it. I agree with a lot of it...it makes me like About Schmidt more for some reason....I'm going to buy it.
I haven't even seen Dancer in the Dark (it's on my vcr right now on tape actually) or The Quiet American or The Pianist. I can't fucking wait to see The Pianist. I might see it this weekend if I can. The wait for dvd is painful.
The Pianist was great. Not entirely what I expected, mind you. I don't know what I expected. I remember sitting there thinking that it would make for a damned fine triple feature if grouped with Schindler's List and La Vita e Bella.

The pianist was the best movie of last year.
Fourth best. Wonderful though, yes.
so wait, you're saying Chicago was in pre-production and didn't get a nudge until the success of Moulin Rouge?
I believe it was a factor of sorts, yes...

Regarding a previous post -- a film version of Chicago was in the works in 1980, with Goldie Hawn and Liza Minnelli sought for the lead roles with Fosse behind the camera. Then, in the mid-80's, Fosse talked to Madonna about possibly doing Chicago. Of course, it took more than two decades to get the film off the ground. The mid-90's Broadway revival didn't hurt, along with the success of Moulin Rouge, and the cajones of les freres Weinstein.
2000 was a vastly underrated year, and it will take a decade to fully appreciate how rich in quality it was. I recall in 1975, a prominent film critic said that "1975 wasn't a bad year, it was a terrible year." And yet in 2000, USA Today used 1975 as a benchmark of excellence in order to say how terrible 2000 was. In other words, the critics in 1975 didn't realize they were living in a golden age of film. I would argue that the mid-90's to 2000 were another golden age (and 2002 and 2003 were darned good, so perhaps the golden age is continuing to this very day).
