pretty hard to remember but here goes:

1 - mulholland drive
2 - the fellowship of the ring
3 - the man who wasnt there
4 - shrek
5 - blinkende lygter (flickering lights)
6 - in the bedroom
7 - memento
8 - the royal tenenbaums
9 - bænken (the bench)
10- waking life

i can't really remember 2001 but i like all the movies on your list, especially in the bedroom. might pick that one up when i get home.

I don't do top tens anymore. I've realized I'm always pulling a muscle every year to think of 10 or narrow it down to 10 each year and then rank them...so now I'm just going to list however many great films there may be just in no order...it's a lot easier. Like, 2001 didn't have that many great movies so it would benefit from my new idea. As would 2002, which had more than 10 great films.

So, here are the best films of 2001 imo....

I really liked it.  It had a real retro feel, but sometimes it felt a little pushed.  

The scene where Gangster #1 is torturing another guy is amazing.  I guess you didn't make it that far.  

See it for Paul Bettany, not Malcolm McDowell.

i was surprised how much i liked that movie. i mean beyond the drag pretense, it was just really exceptional writing and music and characterization.

i don't know if i really think vanilla sky was the best movie of 2001, but at the time it was the movie i had the most passionate reaction to. i haven't seen it since.

2001 was weak compared to 2000 or 2002.  But there were still a few decent films:
