Title: Jia Zhangke
Post by: putneyswipe on January 29, 2021, 02:57:06 AM
As he's one of the most if not the most ambitious directors working, seems right he should have a thread? something I was thinking about since everything on this forum relates to PTA - Jia and PTA are the same age. And I'd say they are on similar ambition levels, completed impressive features at the same early age. And with the years they gradually grew in scope and ambition. They both have big canvasses and aspire to be their countries own cinematic novelists. Very little in common otherwise. Stuff to think about...

Started to tune out once you mentioned PTA (he's never even made a Giallo!!!).
Gonna read up on Zhangke over the weekend -- I tend to tackle filmographies chronologically, so I'll watch them in release order.

If I'm not mistaken the first three films are all on criterion right now.

Fun fact: Scorsese was behind this restoration, he was on the Jia train early and reached out to him after he saw this in the 90s, telling him he was making a new language.
