My choices are- Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp and DeNiro.

Dead, for the time being.  Check here for more info http://www.xixax.com/viewtopic.php?t=1390

Also, I want to see the Coens work with George Clooney and Catherine Zeta Jones.  And they need to have a scene together in an elevator.  Yeah, that would be pretty sweet.

these are old news, but i never heard of them before. not sure if there is any possible truth to them anymore with the ladykillers up next, but still interesting...

-COEN'S GAMBLE ON GRANT
Source: Empire Online 8-3-02

British crime caper, Gambit, is soon to get a re-make Coen style as Joel and Ethan have signed a deal to re-write Ronald Neame's comedy with a mind to putting Hugh Grant in the lead.

The original 1966 film saw Michael Caine as a suitable sticky-fingered thief who teams up with Shirley MacLaine to 'liberate' an expensive statue from its rich owner. Needless to say, things don't exactly go to plan and a series of double-crosses send the whole operation in to disarray.

The Gambit remake has had a number of false starts since the idea was first mooted with high-profile writers- including West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin- attached to develop the script only to be whisked off by other commitments.

However, now that the Coen brothers are on board, writing is set to begin immediately. The pair currenlty have a little time on thier hands while they wait to begin work on Intolerable Cruelty, which is currently awaiting the availability of star George Clooney, still tied up by his directorial debut, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

-COENS PLAN NEW MUSICAL!
Source: Guardian Film 11-8-02

The Coen brothers are planning to produce and direct a musical entitled Romance and Cigarettes, according to Variety.

Sopranos star, James Gandolfini, who appeared in the Coen's The Man Who Wasn't There, is favourite to play the lead role, from a script written by actor and long time Coen collaborator, John Turturro.

The film is set in Bensonhurst, New York and is described as being a cross between Pennies From Heaven and classic US sitcom The Honeymooners.

While the cast in the Coens' last musical endeavour O Brother, Where Art Thou? mimed to other people's recordings, in Romance and Cigarettes the actors would do all their own singing.

The Coens are also apparently keen to sign Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken, both competent singers and dancers, to the project. Shooting is expected to begin early next year after the Coens have finished their current film, the black comedy Intolerable Cruelty starring George Clooney and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

I am really pulling for them to work with some hot teen stars and make a real teen movie maybe with an ugly girl who is pretty on the inside and in love with the popular boy at her school whos plays football. It can be full of teen angst, oh yeah gotta have that angst. The way i see it all the Coen regulars can be teachers in the school and their only lines would be spoken like adults from Charlie Brown with subtitles that when read only sound like the adults from charlie brown. Goodman could be the football coach, or the ugly girl who is pretty on the insides Dad, or how about both. He can yell at football players and yet still be careing about his daughter, who is ugly but pretty on the inside, and wonder why she is full of teen angst. Maybe M. Emmett Walsh could play Goodmans dad, so he could also be the , you guessed it, the ugly girl who is pretty on the insides grandfather. when she asks him for advice he could only respond by telling chilling accounts of bad things that happened in the war, but only in charlie brown adult speak of course. Billy Bob could show up and kill the footbal player, who would be some hot teen star, because he was fucking Billy Bobs wife, then Bill Macey can show up in a duel role as both the good cop and bad cop investigating the death of the football star. In case where nothing is what it seems you have too look past the hot teen stars. there will be a big ragtime dance number near the end followed by the ugly girl who is pretty on the inside killing herself and the murder gets put on her. I think they will call it Angst. Or Hot Teen Stars or better yet Hot Teen Angst!!

Keep Well,
Dan

this is also really old news, but i never heard this before and thought it was really interesting.  apparently after Raising Arizona the Coens were offered a chance to direct Batman but turned it down.  wow, that would have been interesting.

prolly would have been dissapointing. I'm not much for Burton, but for the first Batman, he at least had the decency to commit himself to telling the story for the characters and situation entirely.

Coens would have done fine with the dark tone. Its just out of their amatuer skills they likely would have found ways to ridicule something in that story. Coens doing any story is a sign of them having some disbelief in it.

The Coens Batman would have been better than the Orson Welles Batman, but neither would be better than the 1966 Batman.

Ok fine. Welles' Batman would have been better than the Coens, but it still wouldn't be as good as the 1966 version.

The reason you ask that question is why the 1966 Batman is the best Batman ever.

file this under the CRAZY RUMOR DEPT. but its still interesting.  here's an excerpt from AICN....

8. The Coen Brothers and TARZAN
I also took plenty of heat for my recent open letter to the Coens, but I'm not about to apologize for what I wrote. The main point of that article, missed by many, is that Joel and Ethan always seem to be at their best when they are the originators of a project, and not just hired guns.
That's why I am so intrigued by the news that they are currently prepping an adaptation of Tarzan that is reportedly quite personal for them, close to their hearts. So far, in the long history of filmed versions of the Tarzan story, there's never been one that fully captured the pulp power of the original Edgar Rice Burroughs novels. The Coens are absolute masters of tone, whatever the project, and I will be first in line to see what fresh elements they bring to play and how they try to bring the Lord of the Apes to life.

Yeah, they first talked about this with Billy Bob Thornton back in the Man Who Wasn't There days, and I read somewhere recently that Hugh Jackman might do it instead. Although I'd rather see Billy Bob do it. Something about his eyes just screams "I'm a sensitive man-child raised by apes!"
