Roadside Attractions Acquires Xavier Dolan's Cannes Winner 'Mommy'

Roadside Attractions has acquired U.S. rights to Xavier Dolan's Cannes pic Mommy. The plan is to release it in first-quarter 2015. Dolan's fifth film centers on an explosive 15-year-old boy with ADHD and his widowed single mom. But when Kyla, a new girl across the street, enters their lives, things change. Anne Dorval, Antoine Olivier Pilon and Suzanne Clément star.
Dolan, a Canadian, moved up to the Cannes Competition lineup for the first time with Mommy after winning three prizes in Directors' Fortnight at just 19 (he was famously miffed to be in Un Certain Regard rather than Competition in 2012 with his Laurence Anyways). Mommy won the Grand Jury prize this year.
EOne and Montreal-based Les Films Séville are handling distribution of the film in English and French Canada, while Séville International VP International Sales Anick Poirier negotiated the U.S. deal with Roadside co-president Howard Cohen and attorney Greg Bernstein.

Holy shit! what a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful fucking movie. ripped me apart like a sheet of paper. this Xavier kid is fucking talented beyond anything I'd imagine someone of his age to be. would like to expound a bit more once the experience settles.

I could go for a version of this film with about 25% less hysterical shouting but the kid (Dolan) has promise and I'll def keep an eye on what he does next.
i think he puts himself right into the dangerous forests of the mentally disabled and it's too easy to make allegations from the outside. i think dolan's honest in a way that might threaten those with delicate feelings about how cinema should work

Interesting percentage. I suppose he could've snipped a few outbreaks, but that may have diminished the impact of the scenes where the kid is experiencing the peaceful happiness that's been absent since the loss of his pops. Look forward to catching it again on Blu. Anyone seen any other of Dolan's moves?

the song choices were tacky in a snarky hipster kind of way. the whole thing kinda felt like a telenovela shot by gus van sant.
I actually enjoyed some of the song choices though, maybe because I've been listening to a lot of crappy late 90's music lately, but I never knew the counting crows could be so poignant. Somehow it still worked for me emotionally despite how obvious it was. I found myself sort of identifying with these characters in this ridiculous contrived melodrama, and that doesn't usually happen. Sometimes it's good to be manipulated.
the filmmaking was simultaneously film-schoolish but really impressive at times, the whole opening car crash sequence was really well executed. I could go into more detail, but I thought it was just a good little movie. It could probably be 20 minutes shorter, but the good outweighs the bad in this case.

i'm glad mommy's being celebrated somewhere or whatever, although i think if you go around talking you won't struggle to find people who didn't vibe with the movie. which is great, to me. because indifference is the worst really. and i think a person would have to use a bit of personal effort to feel indifferent about mommy. so you can keep smacking it around all you want and i promise you that it's not tearing me apart. regarding your quote, are you telling me you saw a bit of yourself in the movie? that's what i like to hear

I don't like the movie but there is a scene that I love. It's when they're all dancing and singing to Céline Dion's "On ne change pas". It is a sweet moment and, during that moment, they seem free. It is better than 16:9. They're all trapped in 1:1 but the camera pushes away. They're in the same shot. It is lovely.
