This the thread for a movie called Sinister. Ethan Hawke is in it. People wanted a thread for it, so here is one. Pubrick, you wouldn't like it, so don't worry about it.
Can you please review the movie as if you're writing a book review, while awkwardly sidestepping spoilers? Thanks.
Spoils.
What in the hell were they thinking with the dude sticking his head out in the last few moments. That's the cheapest scare shit I've ever seen. that shit is hokey.
I thought the score/sound over all was excellent, it had a lot going for it. The music had a very ambient quality. The viewing the 8mm footage especially comes to mind.
Like polka said in the shoutbox, it doesn't stick the landing and I think this is due mainly to the fact that the filmmaker wants to explain too much. I really don't need that. Dude's premise is already bonkers so chill out on the exposition and focus more on the eerie shit.
I'm sort of indifferent with regards to the dead kids creepin' around and shit in the later parts of the film. It seems like it would have had more of an impact had the, "extended cuts" portion be the true reveal, because then we could've pieced together the little hands pulling him down in the photo.
One thing I really liked was the two times the kid went sleep walking, those were pretty legit creep outs IMO. The great thing about that device too, from my angle at least is that is has some credulity to it. As in they can be explained, but they're still creepy. So, the tension wasn't all for a music swell with a loud thud, it actually had a point.
Anyway, like I said in, "The Bay" thread, i think most of the horror being made today, at least the stuff i'm exposed to is useless, but this had some nice moments in there.

agreed, but last time I watched, I noticed on the closeup of Mr. Boogey that he has no mouth, it appears to be permanently sealed with fleshy ducttape. It reminded me of all his victims being ducttaped the same way, and how he creeps into people's lives by showing them unSPEAKable horror. The ghost kids do nothing but run around doing the librarian's 'shhh,' and Ellison Oswalt never did finish that book, did he?
As cheap and overdone as that last reveal may be, I think that the point of it was to bring Mr. Boogey out of the 8mm reels and into OUR movie. It may seem like an attempt by the director to milk every last drop out of that makeup job, but I think what he's actually doing is establishing Mr. Boogey as the relentless evil entity who made all of us this happen, will continue to do so, and CANNOT BE STOPPED!!!
Like I said in the shoutbox, they've already confirmed a Sinister part 2 with the same writer-director, and I would be interested to see it explore the Boogey world a little bit more. WTF is going on inside that screen? Ethan Hawke's presence was what drew us all into this movie at first for sure, but having seen it, you know that it's no more his story than the True Crime novels he writes. Him and his family are just another notch in Boogey's belt. It's HIS movie, and that's what I find to be the scariest thing about Sinister.
I think I have said it another thread. This movie is terrible and people should stop pretending it's good.
That is all.
