Title: safety not guaranteed
Post by: Pubrick on April 02, 2013, 05:47:14 PM
i thought there was a thread for this already,.

you know the one i'm talking about. dude puts up an ad for a companion to travel back in time, magazine does story on it and sends cutes patoots to investigate. shit gets real.

(https://xixax.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fmedia.au.timeout.com%2FcontentFiles%2Fimage%2Ffilm%2Fsafety-not-guaranteed-duplass-plaza.jpg&hash=04970d6dd66289082b90b8d1e5173101d81b6b31)

i don't know what idiot decided to make this the default publicity still, there's way better shots in the movie and you can barely see Aubrey Plaza's face. she's great in this. she switches between extremely sincere and cool/detached really well. the movie is often hilarious and completely adorable. should have been nominated for everything at the xaxies.

here's the ad from the film and 2 follow up spoilerful questions for anyone who has seen it:

spoilers:

1. what does he mean by having done this once before? in terms of the film's themes (and indeed entire subplot) it can be taken as that he's only reached out for real love once before. is that all? in terms of the time travelling aspect it poses harder questions. that girl he liked was alive, said he disappeared for a while after having a crush on her at the restaurant they worked at. did he go back once to save her? i just don't get what that line is referring to.. i'm inclined to think it's just about the love thing.

2. what does he mean at the end of the film when he says "the mission has been updated, i'm going back for you now."  the problem is when she reveals her reason for going back she tells this story about her mum, that she got randomly murdered (excellent scene), but then at the end she says to him "i lied about the story".. i wish she had phrased that differently.. she's obviously referring to the MAGAZINE story, right? because then when he says he's going back FOR her it still makes sense that it's to save her mum. otherwise i have no idea what the hell he's talking about or why they have to go back anymore.

only confusing part in the film, otherwise brilliant.

END SPOILERS

watch this shit.

Unrelatedish:
I swear I had the idea for this movie first. But it wasn't a romantic comedy.

(Spoilers)

Loved it. Didn't really think they'd pull off the time travel at the very end.
