WELCOME TO THE 2013 XIXAX AWARDS!
It's time to nominate!
Send your votes in via PM, following the rules (please). The deadline is Friday, March 22nd.
If you're not sure which category something belongs in, ask here and we will answer. Remember, our acting awards are a little unusual — "supporting" roles are truly the smaller roles. The "best performance" categories could encompass, for example, 3-4 characters in an ensemble cast with roughly equal characters. (Note that we DON'T have "leading" performances.)
Any trailer released in 2012 is eligible for Best Trailer even if the film was not released in 2012. You should also try to specify Teaser or Trailer if there were several different versions released.
THE RULES:
YOU MUST
1. vote privately:
. . . .If your username begins begins with A-H (or #), send your ballot to Jeremy Blackman (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=21)
. . . .If your username begins begins with I-P, send your ballot to Pubrick (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=102)
. . . .If your username begins begins with Q-Z, send your ballot to polkablues (http://xixax.com/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=99)
2. copy the form provided below and paste it into your PM
3. only list the movie in each category, not the person who would win (unless it's an acting category)
4. specify the actor and movie (for the acting categories), like this: Actor - "Movie"
5. use the most common title with foreign films (ask if you're not sure)
6. use full titles ("Tree of Life" instead of "TOL")
7. (for the DVD category) specify the original theatrical release date if there are different versions or remakes
8. nominate titles in alphabetical order
9. title your PM "nominations" (please!)
YOU SHOULD
1. be honest
2. vote based on personal opinion (not strategically)
YOU CAN'T
1. nominate more than 5 movies per category
2. send more than one ballot
3. vote from different memberships
4. write your nominations with caps lock on
5. nominate publicly
6. change your ballot after the deadline
YOU CAN
1. nominate fewer than 5 per category (whatever you're comfortable with)
2. leave whole categories blank
3. nominate box sets in the Best DVD Release category
4. campaign for your favorites

What about "The Kid with a Bike"? Imdb has it opening in the US in 2012. Or "A Separation" which opened with a limited release on Dec. 30 2011?
I hereby grant those two films eligibility.
It might be interesting to show the runners-up (runner-ups?) for these. Obviously The Master will take everything.

"Runners-up" is correct. And I'm inclined to agree.
Is the film Lore (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lore_(film)) eligible? I didn't see it anywhere on the oscar link but they did try to get it a foreign language nomination.
I would say probably not. In general, we tend to go by the US theatrical release date (typically not counting film festivals), which in this case was just last month. In the interest of giving the most people the greatest opportunity to see the film, I would be inclined to hold its eligibility to next year's awards.
Alphabetically. So 'The Movie' or 'Movie, The'?
Wait, I'm most definitely over-thinking this.
Also, about the actors- in a movie like Lincoln, where half the world acts in it, would someone like David Strathairn belong in Supporting or the main acting category? And would someone like Scoot McNairy or Ben Mendelssohn in Killing Them Softly belong in Best Male Performance? Or Dwight Henry in Beasts of the Southern Wild? It's just a little confusing.
well, it's that time of the year again when I realize I haven't seen shit:
Life Of Pi
Zero Dark Thirty
The Hobbit
Cloud Atlas
Killer Joe
Magic Mike
The Paperboy
Paranorman
The Sessions
Seven Psychopaths
I gotta at least watch those first 2 before I get my vote in...
See Seven Psychopaths Reels!

I definitely second this motion.

Yeah, just use your better judgement. Anyone questioning their better judgment is free to borrow mine.

In the case of Lincoln, because the surrounding cast is spread so thin, I would say that anybody except DDL and Sally Field fit in the supporting categories.
Killing Them Softly, I'd say both of them go in the main acting category, along with Pitt. Others, like Richard Jenkins, Ray Liotta, or Gandolfini probably fit in supporting. That's a tough one, though; Mendelssohn is right on the edge. You know what, I changed my mind. McNairy and Pitt are leads and Mendelssohn is supporting. I'd like the dude to have a chance.
I haven't seen Beasts yet. Dwight Henry plays the dad, right? Main category.
If anyone has strong opinions about any of this categorization, please speak up and we can hash it out. It might do us good to get a little cheat sheet going for some of these movies regarding which actors to nominate in which categories.
In terms of alphabetization, just do it like this:
Boogie Nights
The Master
Punch-Drunk Love
Doing it wrong is not going to disqualify you or anything. These are more like strong suggestions that make counting a lot easier for us.
So should i put Kill List for this year or the redux
If we're going by the US theatrical release date standard, Kill List is 2012.
important announcement:
at this stage it's important to nominate as many films as you can, they will determine the final 5 nominees you will vote for in the final ballot.
BUT, when we get to that part, whereas usually you would only get to vote for one film in each category THIS TIME in any category where the master is nominated you will be able to vote for TWO entries, the master as well as your second choice.
so for example the vote for best picture would go like this..
1 THE MASTER OBVIOUSLY
2 SPRING BREAKERS ORWHATEVER
this only applies if you loved the master and want it to win a category but also want to rank your second choice. if you hated the master then don't even bother listing it and just provide your one final vote in that category. hopefully this leads to more interesting results than having the runner up decided by the few freaks who don't recognise quality when it farts in their face.
For the record, DON'T VOTE FOR SPRING BREAKERS, as it is ineligible this year.
So, I mentioned these movies in the campaign thread, and I don't know if they're elegible: Blood of My Blood, Tabu and Michael. I want to participate this year and am doing an effort to see as many as I can before the final date.
Those are all eligible. If Tabu hasn't had a legitimate US release by this point, it's never going to.
Thanks. Like I said in the campaign thread, portuguese movies barely have a decent distribution in Portugal, let alone in the rest of the world.
I'm still iffy on the acting categories. So are Philip Seymour Hoffman and Anne Hathaway not supporting here?
Hoffman is in the main acting category. Hathaway (I'm assuming for The Miserables), would still be supporting because her screen time was so short.
Slim pickings this year. I don't even know if I can fill the ballot in good conscience, but, golly, I'll try.
i have the dual prob of being festival off-calendar and being a person of personal obsessions. i'm really sure what i love and not sure how to rank all the things i liked so much
and apparently i'm not allowed to vote "james franco in spring breakers" for every category which is some bogus bs from a bunch of nasti neonancyes
Next year. We'll rename them the Franco Awards. We'll introduce a new category for Best Acting S'picious.
heheh. is that in the trailer? i should go back and watch the trailers now
what about something like tyrannosaur? which was supposedly released in the us in 2011 but absolutely no one saw it until it became available in home video a few months ago?
Tyrannosaur was actually nominated last year, in the Best Debut Feature category, which pretty much cancels out letting it be eligible for this year.
I'm going to try and watch at least two off this list before Friday's deadline: Anna Karenina, Argo, God Bless America, Rust and Bone, Zero Dark Thirty. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with what I've managed to catch up on overall at least out of films I was interested in seeing. Will have to watch Killing Them Softly before the final vote.
In which category would Juno Temple be for Killer Joe?
The deadline for nominations is extended to April 1st
does this mean I can revise my ballot?
Yes.
FYI, Dark Horse isn't on that Oscars page, but it is eligible.

watched it again today and definitely gonna try to fit it in somewhere. Selma Blair was great, seeing her character as an extension of Vi from Storytelling facing all the repercussions of her actions in that movie (
spoil - she probably caught Hepatitis from the professor ) makes it so much more satisfying.
I also like the script more everytime I watch it. It's my 2nd favorite Solondz film after Storytelling, which is fitting.
Will the nominees be revealed soon?
It will be at least a few days.
If anyone still has a ballot to submit, do so immediately, because we're going to start counting soon.
