I made a topic of this a long time ago on the old forum and figured it was right to do another here and show the revised list (everyone has a revised list when it comes to any top ten list).
**EDIT** The list I had came from a year ago. To say the least, I highly disagree with all the choices I made. A very very old thread to return like this!
Interesting list, like all of those movies, but haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies or The Sweet Hereafter or Princess Mononoke.
Tough thread, I could list 10 movies I love but I find it near impossible to make a ranking list.
I've gotten a lot of people that have said Princess Mononoke is overrated to be where it is on my list but for me, it is what a lot of people put Star Wars up to be, so you could say it is my Star Wars since I never really cared for any of the movies.
Grave of the Fireflies hasn't been seen by most people on this entire forum but is one of the most simple and poetic films I have ever seen, and is easily the best film in the last 25 years for me.
Interesting though, that both of these movies belong to the category of anime but transcend what people have made that genre to be with only knowing Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z or whatever.

I still have to see the rest of that. I got an hour or so into it and wound up getting into a big fight with my girlfriend over it. The sounds of children being beaten every 2 minutes was freaking her out (I had just recently shown her City of God and she was really disturbed by it) and she wanted me to shut it off (she wasn't even in the room). It got ugly after that. We resolved everything but I haven't had an opportunity to watch it since. What I had seen of it, though, was incredible and, provided that the second half was as good as the first half, then I agree that it deserves Criterion treatment, as does Chen Kaige's The Emperor and the Assassin.

I just liked the fact that Abel Ferrara was able to construct this nightmarish vision of NYC as the personal living hell of a corrupted cop played admirably by Harvey Keitel. I think Harvey let it all hang out in that performance, and if you've seen the movie then you know i also mean that literally. I also like the religious symbolism that Ferrera used throughout the movie, as a way to show the Bad Lieutenant character a way to redemption. I mean, i know having Jesus pop up is pretty obvious, but then Ferrara subverts his appearance by having Keitel call him a "ratf*ck". I know that was out there, but its moments like that, and Keitel's performance overall, that really blew my mind about that movie.
What did you not like about it?

1. Pulp Fiction

ha! then you should listen to the critic commentaries on revolutions and reloaded....i like reloaded as my favorite but they slam that shit hard..makes me feel bad for liking it....as for revolutions that one does suck ass.

Or is it the other way around? Either way, it finally justifies, in some twisted way (hah), the Ouroborous, or the ending of Lost Highway. It's like Persona, but with dudes.
lists suck anyways. and like i said, i still love the movies originally on my list, im just more INTO the ones i listed recently at this time. i'm a kid for chrissakes! my tastes are supposed to wildly fluctuate and eventually settle. but i have never ever liked the matrix, so i dont know what to tell you with that one.
