Shane Black Suits Up To Direct 'Iron Man 3'
Source: The Playlist

Talks revealed last week have turned to final negotiations as Marvel has found their replacement for Jon Favreau for "Iron Man 3." Deadline reports that Shane Black is in final negotiations to take on the directing gig for the lucrative franchise. Black is a solid choice for the director's chair, a genre veteran behind a string of '80s and '90s action films including "Lethal Weapon," "The Last Boy Scout" and "The Long Kiss Goodnight." More recently, he made a splash by writing and directing "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (which served as a comeback vehicle for Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.). We're definitely excited by this choice but for us, the make or break of this thing not just being a mess of Marvel Easter Eggs for "The Avengers 3" (or whatever) will be if Black is able to write the script. "That's not figured out," a source told Deadline but we certainly hope it's in the cards. While both 'Iron Man' films were box office hits, Marvel could learn something from the diminished returns of the second one by not trying to link every gestating comic book film to "Iron Man 3" and just letting Tony Stark do his thing. No word yet if Black will squeeze in one of the other projects he's been recently attached to—a live action adaptation of the manga "Death Note" and an adaptation of radio serial "Doc Savage"—before he gets crackin' on "Iron Man 3," but he does have some time. The film isn't set to hit theaters until May 3, 2013.

I love this.  Please let him write the screenplay.

The main reason I never loved Iron Man as much as everyone else is that I had loved Kiss Kiss Bang Bang so much I felt like I'd already seen Downey do that and better in that film.  And cause all the action scenes were for kids.

Yeah, this can only be a good thing. These superhero movies are becoming interchangeable. Can't even tell them apart. Shane Black will at least make it cool, funny and give it an edge.

I like Shane Black a lot, but I fear the super hero subject, the studio money, and the guaranteed PG-13 rating - could all limit him.

wasn't that why they got jon favreau in the first place?

Yeah, and it worked.  Once.

Guy Pearce To Play Aldrich Killian In 'Iron Man 3'
Source: Playlist

It seems Guy Pearce is liking this whole blockbuster thing. While "Lockout" didn't quite make waves at the box office (okay, it barely made a splash) it was clear he had a ball of a time as the wisecracking lead, but now he's joining an established franchise in a role that won't be as showy, but will be crucial.

The Warren Ellis "Extremis" storyline has long been revealed to be the foundation of "Iron Man 3," and with casting ramping up, Pearce has landed the role of geneticist Aldrich Killian in the film. So who is he? We had no idea either, but we hit Google and thanks to this Marvel Universe page we learned that he works at Futurepharm with Maya Hansen (in a role that we presume will be cast shortly) where they develop the Extremis virus that essentially forces the human brain to rewire it's healing center and become stronger as a result. The plan was to take it to the military, but they wind up stealing Extremis from Futurepharm and putting it in the hands of terrorists.

It's a bit of darker role in the Marvel universe, and as such, seems pretty well suited for Pearce, and certainly, his addition raises the talent stakes. "Iron Man 3" starts shooting next month and will hit theaters on May 3, 2013.

Jessica Chastain Back Into 'Iron Man 3′ Talks
BY MIKE FLEMING | Deadline

EXCLUSIVE: I'm told that Jessica Chastain is back in the mix to play a starring role opposite Robert Downey Jr in Iron Man 3. The role is a sexy scientist every bit as smart as Tony Stark. Chastain, who last year starred in The Tree of Life, The Help, Take Shelter and The Debt, was originally offered the role but it looked like she was going to be preoccupied making a movie with Joel Edgerton and Samantha Morton. I think that movie was The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She also had scheduling issues involving the Kathryn Bigelow-directed Sony Pictures film about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

Marvel then began lining up meetings with actresses like Diane Kruger, Gemma Arterton and Isla Fisher. But all that has changed as Chastain's movie has been pushed, the Bin Laden scheduling was worked out, and it looks like she's going to get the role after all. She will join Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, and potentially Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley in the third installment of the Iron Man trilogy, this one directed by Shane Black. Chastain is repped by CAA and Mosaic.

Rebecca Hall Joins 'Iron Man 3' In Lead Female Role
Source: Playlist

While Marvel's "Iron Man" franchise lost potential female lead star Jessica Chastain recently  -- she had to pass, she's busy this summer -- Robert Downey Jr. and new director Shane Black ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang") clearly have their eye on some top notch talent. With Scarlett Johansson saying she's going to sit out "Iron Man 3," Tony Stark apparently needs yet another strong female in the cast that's not Gwyneth Paltrow's Pepper Potts. And evidently, it appears Marvel has found their woman: "The Town" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" star Rebecca Hall is in talks to join the cast (presumably she'll add some sexual tension for the female-appreciating Stark).

Production on "Iron Man 3" begins later this month and by the sounds of the description, Hall will play Maya Hansen, a scientist who works with Guy Pearce's Tristian Aldrich character to create Extremis, the virus that's a central part of 'IM3' storyline. Known for writing the "Lethal Weapon" series, Black co-wrote the script with Drew Pearce and the film will be loosely based on Warren Ellis' six-issue "Iron Man: Extremis" series.

Returning to the "Iron Man" series fold is Don Cheadle with Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau said to be joining the cast (the former is confirmed, the latter is not). According to IMDB, "The Thin Red Line" cinematographer John Toll will be the DOP. "Iron Man 3" is due in theaters May 3, 2013. [Variety]

'Iron Man 3' to Become First Film to Play in 4DX Format in Japan
The film will be shown with tilting seats, blowing wind and fog and odor effects via technology that is expected to come to the U.S. this year.

TOKYO -- Iron Man 3 will be shown from April 26 in 4DX at a theater in Nagoya, central Japan, operated by the Korona World chain, which plans to screen 12 titles a year using the new format.

"Fourth dimension" effects utilized by the system include strobe lights and equipment in the ceiling that can drop bubbles down upon the audience, who will pay a $13 (1,300 yen) premium for 3D versions and $10 for 2D films, on top of the regular ticket price. Average admission price in Japan last year was $12.50.

"It was really a matter of timing that Iron Man became the first title for 4DX in Japan, though we were looking for a blockbuster action film, as that is what works best with the system," Tagiki Ishiguro, a spokesperson for Korona World, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The 4DX system is already in use in theaters in China, South Korea, Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Israel and a number of countries in South America. The first film to be shown in the format was Avatar in 2009, in Seoul, where the company behind the system, CJ Group is headquartered.

"The programming for the various effects is done in advance by CJ," explained Ishiguro, who said that Korona World was currently negotiating with Hollywood and Japanese studios on the next 4DX releases.

CJ Group is reported to be moving ahead with plans to bring 4DX to the U.S. this year, with a view to equipping 200 theaters over the coming five years.
