I was into this until the scene where:
"BECAUSE I HAVE A VOICE!"
"Yes, you do"
yeah that was pretty hilarious.
i think geoffrey rush is overrated in a strange way. he's overrated in that everyone just assumes he's going to be great in whatever he does and it feels like he thinks that too. it's like he reads a script and says, "i'd be great in that, hell, i AM great in that" and then when it comes time to actually shoot the film he just sort of turns up and says "well hurry up, i've already been great in this. quickly, i've got other films that i've got to turn up in."
colin firth is still trying to prove that he's great tho. and pretending he can't talk here pretty much makes him a shoe in come award season.

Just send a crateful of Oscars to the people who made this film. Clearly they're begging for them. Inspiring story of a man overcoming a problem? Check. England? Check. Period costumes? Check. Title screens for the actors stating they're either an "Academy Award Winner" or "Academy Award Nominee"? Check.
I ain't watching that shit!
Looks like a proper ass version of Radio!

Screw you, Tree of Life... this is what the poster of an Oscar winner looks like:

that looks fanmade.
by a really really boring fan.
Believe it or not, someone got paid actual money by an actual movie studio to make that actual poster. Meanwhile, Mod and I are making top-quality Ratners for free, like chumps.
early new years resolution: in 2011 we stop wasting our talents!
you with your awesome posters and me with my scathing judgments.

from my blog (http://modage.tumblr.com/post/2186904956/the-kings-speech):
The King's Speech is one of those movies that I never would have seen if it weren't coming out in the middle of awards season on a minor tidal wave of "Best Picture" hype. There are a few of these every year that I'll see, despite minimal interest, just because I just want to make sure. It's Oscar bait through and through, but this one is actually pretty good. I knew watching the trailer that this film would at least be a little bit different. For one thing, it looks like it's been shot by a cross between Wes Anderson and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Even a simple conversation between 2 actors becomes strangely interesting when they're each in the lower corner of the frame.
The main cast of Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter are all great here, (duh). And with the historical drama (check), playing famous figures (check) and speech impediment (double-check), there are bound to be awards reaped from this. Though I preferred Firth's performance last year in A Single Man, this is a good film. But it's also the kind of film that people will get really worked up over for the next 3 months, and will probably be forgotten about by this time next year. The truly ambitious films of 2010, (Inception, Black Swan), will be the ones people are still talking about a decade from now, regardless of what Oscar says.
This was better than I thought it would be for sure.
Of the end-of-the-year Oscar grab movies, this is the best I've seen so far. Definitely better than The Fighter.
I don't know that I'd want to see this many more times, but it's just so fucking charming and beautiful. I want Geoffrey Rush to be my grandfather (even though he's my dad's age).
I think if I had read the screenplay, I wouldn't have thought this movie would be any good. Somehow though, even the part of the trailer I laughed at was played out in a way that didn't make me snicker during the actual film.

I don't know that I'd ever see it again, but it was entertaining.

I don't know that I'd watch it again, but that doesn't take away from my enjoyment of it.

I loved Tremors when I was a kid, but I am pretty sure it wouldn't hold up if I watched it again.
RegualarKarate: he might not be much of a movie repeater but dammit if he doesnt enjoy himself a flick first go around!
I've been nailed.
Oscar bait at its finiest butbut overall I wasn't blown away as everyone and their mother in hollywood was. Colin definitely deserved the academy award but the direction (while straightforward and strong) wasn't particularly phenomenol. Still enjoyed it though.
next time just say "i watched this" and leave it at that.
go Xixax!! one page on the King's Speech, alllllllrrriiiitttteeee!!!
