Hey kids,
Just wanted to share with all of you that I'm producing a new movie, which starts shooting tomorrow in Austin, TX. I'm super excited!
"blacktino" is a dark teen comedy about an overweight half-black, half-latino nerd named Stefan Daily. He was raised by his black grandmother in a medium sized suburb of Austin, TX. Struggling to find his place in a mostly white high school.
Stefan finds sanctuary among the eclectic mix of social outcasts in the school's Theatre Department. In the tradition of the great teen comedies of the last thirty years "blacktino" will ensure that the torch of "teen angst" continues to burn bright.
Cast: Austin Marshall, Devyn Ray, Tiger Sheu, Leon Washington, Denise Williamson, Bryan Jackson, Conrad Gonzales, Timeca Seretti, Danny Trejo, Jeff Fahey, Selma Pinkard and Daryl Sabara.
Writer/Director: Aaron Burns

I'm definitely interested in the film. Sounds great. I can definitely relate to bonding with the strange, strange people in the theater department. The concept art up on Facebook is also fantastic.
P.S. I'm moving to Austin next week. Perhaps you'll be way too busy, but if you've got any time, I'd like to meet up, grab a drink or something. I love meeting XIXAXers!
Good luck. I'll keep an eye on it. Sounds fun.

Haha man aren't you gonna say anything about the fact that the main character is NAMED after you? And aren't you from Austin as well?
I always thought kal's obsession with you was a little funny but this is too far! Haha.. wow.
Is THIS why Trejo is at the hotel in the building I work in?
Sounds awesome, can't wait to hear more about it/ see people around town.
and Matt! NEXT WEEK!? Give me a ring! (yes, I have my PMs on Xixax set up to ring my phone)
and Stefen BETTER NOT be from Austin.
Trejo is always here, but he is not shooting his scenes for the movie yet.
Matt, RK, let's definitely meet up next week. You guys can come to set sometime if you're interested. I have to go to LA for a couple of days but should be back here mid-week.

I'll be there in september, anyone there in september?
alright then fuck you all.
Kal, I'd love to visit the set sometime! Thanks! It'd be great if we could all meet up, definitely. I aim to get there on Tuesday, and I'll keep in touch as to my availability (gotta take care of some stuff right away and then start the job hunt).
RK, I will PM you my contact info.
Pete, I'll see you in September.
Stefan, I'll see you in a few days.
I will see everyone.
We just got another actress on board. I like her but she is not a Xixax favorite. She'll be perfect for this though...

You know Chayse? Yeah, he is great.
I've been following his work now for a few years. He use to post on a few cinematography boards back in the day that I would visit and I thought it was kind of funny to see his name on the slate, connecting the dots. Best of luck man!

No I think the story as always is that you can't write for shit.
P's taken more shots than Peter Weller in the opening scene of Robocop the last 6 or so weeks.
Dudes try and get inside and go for the knockout blow but P stays on the outside and beats them with the jab. He's beating everyone right now and seems to be unstoppable. But as with every great champ who was on top, it's only a matter of time until some hungry young buck comes around and puts them out and takes their crown.
My moneys on KarlJan.
Oh yeah, the guy's on top of his game right now.
KarlJan is definitely a prospect, but can he go 10 rounds against a guy like Pubrick? Barely any of his posts have been longer than a sentence. And you've got to wonder... his last 3 posts have been quite Walrus-esque, which makes me doubt his potential to stay consistent like P has over the years.
The skill set needed to put down the champ is quite peculiar, since you can't go toe to toe with him. A guy like SiliasRuby has managed at some points to put him out of his game with his uber-meek attitude. A berserk guy like AlguienEstolamiPantalones was arguably as skilled but less restrained than him, which forced his retreat.
I can only see one guy topping him off, though it's doubtful the fight would ever take place, and it's another veteran; Pozer.
a long time ago in a xixaxy far far way P pwnted me after i crossed him. i learned early on he was an Arthur Feldman and i was merely a potzer. i'd like to say since then ive moved up to Stanley Kubrick status but like ol Kubes i could never best the best player... unless perhaps he gave me the point in move advantage.

wow
polka won, despite the mom line.
the moral of the story is - prescience > wit.
so the blacktino kid is like a halfrican max fischer?
austin's got some quirky theater departments.
And unlike Matt Damon in the new Eastwood movie (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=11285.0), I am willing to use my eerie powers for financial gain.
Most of you would pay to see Citizen Jane, especially mod who loves Michelle.
What did you guys think of the promo?
So is Rosebud her gun?
the promo video is too vague, like I know it's a joke because of the write-ups and stuff, but the video itself is too quick and contains not that much punchline. I mean we know it's silly and looks fake, but you can't really link it to citizen kane, not even with the title.
i agree with pete, in that polka won (i can at least claim to have been the first to think he was right, after his original guess in the blacktino thread, so.. called it that he called it! (http://xixax.com/index.php?topic=11223.msg294116#msg294116)) and with his assessment of the promo.
i will add that this bit of viral marketing only becomes great when places like slashfilm do some impressive snooping, as shown in this quote from the link that kal posted:
QuoteThe page gives another clue, a copyright notice that lists "Urban Arson", which seems to be the pseudo name of Aaron Burns, a visual effects artist/supervisor who worked on Grindhouse, Planer Terror, and has a feature directorial debut on a dark comedy indie titled Blacktino. The $1 million film is about "an overweight half-black, half-hispanic nerd named Stefan Daily" who was "raised by his black grandmother in a medium sized suburb of Austin, TX."
they're not wrong in calling it a "pseudo name", but i think what they meant to say was pseudonym.. and more accurately it is an anagram. which is kinda clever i guess.
and it's true, in his early days pozer did constantly try to have a go at me.
I had this kinda figured out, but that's because I'm familiar with Fantastic Fest.
The only thing that confused me was that this seemed to combine the Fantastic shorts that precede the festival movies with the "don't talk in the theater" shorts that start normal Alamo films. Is this so they can keep showing them after Fantastic Fest? If so, I'd get rid of the "Fantastic", cuz it comes off as kinda confusing if you don't know that's how all the Fantastic shorts HAVE to end.
If I had seen this in front of a FF movie, I would have laughed, but seeing it here like this, it's a little confusing.
If you're trying to push Blacktino with this idea, I think you should flesh out the concept a little more in the trailer.
It seems to have people talking though, so good job.
Quote from: Pas on September 27, 2010, 07:34:07 AM
his last 3 posts have been quite Walrus-esque
I'm confused. Does this mean that I post like a walrus or are you simple referring to my weight?
Congrats on Blacktino's SXSW premiere Kal!
:yabbse-thumbup:
Thanks!
BTW here is the teaser we just put up... full trailer coming in a few days!
http://vimeo.com/19504898 (http://vimeo.com/19504898)
You like? :yabbse-grin:
Sweet! I will do my bestest to see it. Do you think they'll let me in if I say I know the producer?
i don't get the teaser.. is it making fun of the movie?
if it's making fun of precious and the blind side then it doesn't differentiate itself enough to show that it offers anything better than those versions of fat loser stories.
the other thing is that those two films are not really appreciated by the same people... precious is for black people, the blind side is for white people.. so i guess in that way blacktino can fit somewhere in between based on the title alone. but that only places it in the same caliber of those two other films (which were shit).. without telling you what's the catch with this fat kid.
a good teaser is vague in that it doesn't explain the whole plot.. this one makes the mistake of showing nothing at all. i can barely figure out that the main character is the kid.. i mean, i guess it's the kid, but why? he's running at night.. i see.. there's just nothing to get excited about.
anyway congrats on the premiere, it's good that it's going to big places.. in the end any review from xixax doesn't matter at all if you sell the thing at a good price. so this is just me reviewing the teaser like we do with every other trailer around here, don't take it too personally..
P, the point is for it to be ironic and offensive... those movies are not supposed to be "movies about black, fat, pathetic kids with no self esteem". They would never advertise themselves as that. It's offensive and out of line. Those are serious movies (at least for them) and this is something else.
This is a comedy. The idea of the teaser right now is for you have a 'wtf' reaction simply because the trailer will come out in a couple days. I understand where you're coming from but you're the first person that analyzed it so much without understanding how stupid it is and laughing, cause that is the point. You get to see a glimpse of the fat pathetic kid running (and he was suffering for real when he was running) and that is it.
Anyhow, thanks for the feedback anyhow. Hopefully you'll like the full trailer and eventually the film.
I thought it was excellent! The way it differentiates itself from Precious and The Blind Side is by the fact that the people who made Blacktino would also make a trailer like this.
Extremely excited to announce that we have our World Premiere on Opening Night at SXSW, right after the Premiere of Source Code.
This is incredible! Anyone here who's been at the Paramount Theatre knows what I'm talking about!

I did see Blacktino. It was incredibly well produced and I think it'll do a good job of being a crowd-pleaser as it goes onto other fests. So I definitely want to congratulate you and everyone involved in putting this together. I feel like I have to say, though, that I didn't like the film. Part of it was that this kind of movie just isn't the sort of thing that I enjoy, and part of it is that I was ultimately disappointed in the creative content and the film's general message about race, but I still sincerely feel that it's an extraordinary accomplishment from a production value standpoint, and I do think that a lot of people will love the movie and that it will find some success.
