One of those movies where you can't quite put your finger on what's so good about it. The trailer sells the film as a sort of yuppie farce centering on Catherine Keener, but the film is really an ensemble that balances comedy and drama in a way that feels effortless. I'd never seen a Nicole Holofcener movie before so I didn't really know what to expect but I think what makes the film so good is that it never quite goes where you think it's going to. A lesser filmmaker would sacrifice reality for entertainment, amping up situations for bigger laughs and forcing dramatic confrontations but Holofcener remarkably resists these temptations. One of my favorite films this year, I'm not sure why this film hasn't picked up more acclaim.
