Release Date: March 12th, 2010 (wide)

Premise: Kirk, an average Joe, can't believe his luck. Though he's stuck in a seemingly dead-end job as an airport security agent, against all odds, Molly, a successful and outrageously gorgeous babe, has fallen for him. Not only is Kirk stunned, but his friends, family and his ex-girlfriend, too. Now he has to figure out how to make the relationship work, even though he'd be the first to admit she's totally out of his league.

The idea of this movie makes me angry.  It's a movie based around objectifying people that probably has some lame message at the end about not objectifying people, but really, the movie is objectifying people the whole time.  From the commercials, it looks to be very sexist all the way through (i.e., jokes like, "I thought my wife was hot but your girl makes my wife look like a pig!" and one commercial that shows a beautiful girl and calls her a "7" because she's not blonde with big breasts like the "10" girl).

don't think I'll watch it but who doesn't like a movie about a girl falling for a guy who doesn't think he has a shot (rhetorical question don't say no please?)  I think your problem is not with the movie but with the idea of leagues.

Yeah it's a perfect set up for everyone to want to root for the couple to work out, so I think it'll be popular.

I might just have a problem with leagues... I haven't thought about leagues too much.  I just think it's icky the way this movie seems to advocate the idea that women who aren't a "7" or above should be ignored.  It's not enough to say, "But they're showing men who are "5" and below!" as a good thing.  There are plenty of movies that show guys who are "5" and below and get us to root for them, but nearly none presenting a wide range of what women can look like.  This movie clearly has a very limited view of what women can look like, and the casual sexism is really disturbing to me (I forget if it's in the trailer but it's in the TV commercial: "Are you sure she's really hot?  You said that about Marnie and she's kind of a skank. (Marnie walks up) Oh hi, Marnie!").  Like I said, I expect the movie to carry the message: "Oh but that's just what the dumb loser friend with his dumb bullshit ideas says, and at the end you'll see that objectification is wrong!"  Except, we're supposed to laugh at the joke.

I'd say my problem, then, is with the extremity of the idea of leagues when it comes to women in films.  You can root for guys like Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogen, but if the women don't look like Alice Eve or Katherine Heigl, you can treat them like shit, or just never hire women who aren't "hotties" in the first place.  I think racism and ageism are also very much in play but that's a whole other issue.  For now I'll just say, "loser schlub" with "bangin' blonde hottie?"  Seen it.  If they're gonna pull this story out again, can they at least not, within the span of a 30-second TV spot, call women "skanks," "hot boxes," and "pigs?"  I don't like to be humorless about it, but it's just so gross and tired.

Also most 10s I've seen in my life were going out with 5s.

Yeah, I shouldn't have paid this much attention.  It's just that it's by far the most advertised movie right now.  I feel like I've seen the commercial for it 10 times a day for the past few weeks, and I don't even watch that much TV!  I would believe that the commercial actually comes on 10 times during the Stewart/Colbert hour.  I've practically got the TV spots memorized.  So it got me a lot more annoyed than it would have otherwise, and resulted in a rant.

What a piece of shit.

Just finished subtitling this one... wasn't so bad, really. I laughed a whole bunch of time. Not Appatow-calibre but it's alright.

That was my review of this film I will forget I have seen in 10 days.

What do you think of subtitling another one of these Hollywood movies with a Canadian lead, would you rather it be the other way around, that were squinting to read the translations of your Quebecanese jokes? I mean Canada seems to have some very capable filmmakers but we seem to take all your comedic stars away  :yabbse-undecided:

Yeah, the english canada side is pretty fucked. Canadian actors/comics/singers are better off going south for their wallet and their personal career. Even that Justin Bieber kid is canadian. But without the language barrier, why wouldn't they. It's really understandable.

But frankly, I don't give a shit because I hardly find these people to be from my country really. Well, I guess we are proud of them etc, but in Quebec we care 99.9% for Quebec and 0.01% for Canada. Our french stars (french-canadian) actors/comics/directors often work in France but they mostly stay here. We have our own star-system.

Jay Baruchel though is a great exception. He really seem to care about english-Quebec and he just did The Trotsky in Montreal, and he's doing Notre Dame de Grace next year that talks about the 1995 Referendum (failed separation of Quebec 50.1% to 49.9% (not kidding)). He does these movies with french-canadians and at last we get to have an accent. (Normally they do movies here, have some quebecers in the cast for tax reasons probably, and then dub them over. Fuckers)

He's still very unknown here, but I hope people will start to know his name because he looks like a nice guy who can bring us a lot of Hollywood action in Montreal!

That sums it up.  Its a pleasant enough diversion with some laughs, but nothing I'd go out of my way to revisit.  Jay Baruchel and Alice Eve don't have much chemistry.  Its hard to see why she likes him other than the fact that the film requires it.

I've seen plenty of attractive women with not-so-attractive guys, but rarely the reverse, so if women do think about leagues, it probably isn't primarily look-based, the way it is with the men who think in terms of leagues.  I think in real life when men do say "she's out of your league" or "she's out of my league" its more tongue-in-cheek, though its not like there aren't less-than-successful guys with relatively successful girls who wonder what the girls see in them.
