Title: The Ghost Writer

Summit to distribute Polanski's 'Ghost Writer'
Studio nabs North American rights to thriller
Source: Variety

Summit Entertainment will distribute Roman Polanski's thriller "The Ghost Writer" in North American during the first half of next year.

Summit made the announcement Friday.

Polanski produced the film along with longtime collaborators Robert Benmussa and Alain Sarde. Summit also acted as foreign sales agent for "The Ghost Writer."

North American rights to "The Ghost Writer" were represented by ICM.

Pic centers on a former British Prime Minister, portrayed by Pierce Brosnan, who is holed up writing his memoirs on an island off the eastern seaboard of the U.S. After his aide drowns, a professional ghostwriter -- played by Ewan McGregor -- is sent out to help him finish the book.

Cast also includes Olivia Williams, Kim Cattrall, Jim Belushi, Robert Pugh and Tom Wilkinson. The pic's based on the novel "The Ghost" by Robert Harris, who joined Polanski in penning the adaptation.

Production is set up as a French-German-UK co-production between RP Films 11, Babelsberg Film and Runteam III. Henning Molfenter, Carl L. Woebcken and Christoph Fisser co-produced along with Timothy Burrill.

Polansksi is under house arrest at his chalet in Switzerland since his release on bail last week by Swiss authorities. Polanski, 76, was arrested in Zurich in September on an international fugitive warrant in connection with the 1977 child sex case.

Polanski, Cattrall, Williams and Belushi are represented by ICM.

I went solely based on the kicker from Ebert's review--something about a good old-fashioned thriller.
and he was right.  this is pretty classical, except it's got olivia williams as the former first lady of England, which was pretty awesome.
good script, a very restrained movie.  pierce brosnon was fun to watch - his performance was all building up to one little monologue.  I have not seen performances shaped like that in a long time.  I think a pair of performances from ryan phillipe and peter sarsgaard from Breach and Shattered Glass were the last of this kind that I have seen.

Yes, it was such a pleasure to just be in the hands of someone who knows how to make a suspense film with grace, humor and visually inspired touches. The script is pretty tight and gives everyone a chance to shine. Even McGregor is pretty cool here, more than usual certainly. It is an old fashioned thriller and it's a shame there are no more like it. Loved every minute of it.

there were plenty like it this year: the red riding series, the millennium trilogy, and the best of them all, Mother.

great! I was doubting to see the red riding series and mother. Now they're next.

Mother sucked.

Millenium trilogy (part 1 was the only one I saw) sucked.

Red Riding was good.

I didn't care for the red riding trilogy.  I thought they all looked great but the plots were all very sketchy to bad, which was a weird tradeoff because the acting and everything else was so top-notch.

Mother did not suck.  Jesus dude, it was so good.

but I brought these up just because they're all thrillers made this/last year, and alexandro was looking for them.  even ghost writer was just ok after a while.

I really like the BBC version of State and Play.

Felt like I've had this conversation before.

i think ghost writer is a little better than ok. just the elegance of it is refreshing.
polanski is not my favorite filmmaker. I respect his films more than I enjoy them. I own Rosemary's baby and Chinatown but only because they were cheap. I never watch them. He usually leaves me cold for some reason, although The Pianist was really great. Repulsion and Knife in the Water are two films everyone seems to love that I don't really care for. But I enjoy his "american" thrillers like frantic and this because they have their own pace and his twisted sense of humor gives them a nice touch of personality that thrillers usually lack.

now I won't see the damn red riding trilogy, sounds like it's too long for what it will amount to.
mother on the other hand, I've heard mostly positive things.

A miracle of amazing taut and sharp filmmaking expounds an classical thriller with sleek panache and sweet cleverness. It reminds you of what you loved about Polanski in the first place, his skillful thoughtful direction. He keeps this mystery compelling and interesting. The story feels like it could have come out of the tail end of the '70's rennasaince. Its getting tougher and tougher to do a smart and quick thriller these days and because of Roman's talent this film is a cut above grade A.

I don't like this picking on Silias. He's watching movies and commenting on them. What he says can be interpreted as basic evaluations, but he's relying on his gut and feelings and since he's watching a lot of movies that no one cares to watch, he's extending himself for the board's sake. Not many people here (myself included) are doing that, but we give him crap because he's talking about movies? I'm sorry, but for a board that says it like PTA, the reaction thread to There Will Be Blood is one of the driest and most hyperbole ridden threads in existence. Only a few people tried to make honest hay out of the movie with their thoughts and I commend them, but the majority of the posters here played ring around the rosie with every word you can use to say something is "great" or "amazing". Some conversations in thread were about plot hangups and what happened or didn't happen, but those don't speak very much to theme or identity of a film. Sometimes a film can inspire great discussions here, but more often than not, when something is very good, it seems more to inspire the smallest worded reactions possible. I compliment Silias for at least being a fan of movies and mustering more movie reporting than any of us are willing to do. He's reminding me of movies I remember wanting to watch because, once upon a time, I thought, "Oh shit, I should watch that."

yeah, that enthusiasm is pretty rare.  but it's a good thing to have.  from a lurker's standpoint, all reviews longer than a sentence are appreciated.

GT you have plenty of your own pet peeves regarding how movies should be discussed.
plus silias isn't fazed by my shitty comments.
plus we already talked about the movie.

For sure GT proves once again he's top notch iq, good post.

Silias reviews are super useful, he made me watch a bunch of great movies.

But that Ghost Writer one was pretty funny though.

Silias: make your own review thread with all your watchings it's gonna be epic.

Thanks for the words GT. I really appreciate them. They mean a lot and its rare to fine genuine compassion in a world of internet slime. When I watch film or cinema of any kind I try and find something interesting or intriguing about each and every piece that I watch. I guess thats tougher and tougher to find-at least on here. I have a negative side just like most people on this board but I have the decency to beat up on myself rather than lash out on personas I barely know that post on a internet board. At least most of the time I beat up on myself and not others. There are a few postings where I have thrown shit at people.

Anyway, if Pas wants me to create a thread just for my hyperbolic or ridiculous reviews I perhaps will. In the end, I can just review from my heart and from my gut. If something truly moves me I'm gonna fuckin' say it. In fact, if a movie has nothing interesting or intriguing to say or it doesn't move me emotionally I'm not going to say much about it. If it is horrible I won't ramble on about it and I'm certainly not going to buy it. Shit is shit and we don't have to go on and on about it if it is. None of us or at least very few of us (with the exception of mod and maybe Mac) have a profession being a movie reviewer for any publication. I do this for fun. I'll continue doing it for fun because I get something out of it. I have no fucking clue what others get out of saying sarcastic or deplorable comments about my reviews. Perhaps a false sense of superiority at a place where it really doesn't matter anyway. If you keep reading I'll keep writing.

Sincerely Yours,

Siliasruby

At least Silias is commenting on movies regularly and watching everything. That's more than the rest of us (including myself) are doing.

Keep doing your thing, Silias.
