Jan 31st is too soon, dawg. A lot of us won't be able to catch up until around March or so when the big ones are out on video.

^^^^ true dat

I have yet to see, wild things, a serious man, hurt locker, moon, up in the air, il divo (it's always rented!), antichrist, bad lieutenant, precious, bright star, in the loop...

Yea, if it's coming now, I'm skipping voting completely. Normally I can only marginally fill out my nominee list, but right now would be even more miniscule. It wouldn't be worth it.

Antichrist and Bad Lieutenant won't be out til March and those are two i desperately want to see before I make a list.

Moon and Hurt Locker are out tomorrow though...

I can't find a dvd release date for 35 Shots of Rum

You all have computers.  If there's something you desperately need to see in the next three weeks, just download it.  I promise you the MPAA won't notice.

2009 is done with and unlike some years where December is a glut of Awards-worthy movies, last year they were actually spread out over the 12 months.

I'm not sure what the release dates were in other countries but in America:

wild things - October
a serious man - October
hurt locker - June
moon - June
il divo - April
antichrist - October
bad lieutenant - November
precious - November
bright star - September
in the loop - July

So that should've given everyone time to see any movies they were dying to see.  And if not, assuming that you guys watched 5 movies that you enjoyed in the last year, vote for those.  It doesn't have to be a "complete" list where you've seen every movie that came out, just vote from what you saw.  K?

I'm voting, but only because I don't want polka to take me out back and shoot me in the face!

Is this a threat? Are you telling us exactly what we should vote for? What happens if we don't? Oh, let me guess -- we'll never be heard from again, right?

I will not comply.

I'm standing up for myself and my people.

This calls for a name change.......

The Oscar nominations are announced on February 2nd.  We're trying to get ours in ahead of that so our minds aren't all tainted.  There's no shame in not having seen every movie to come out in 2009, and the world will not screech to a halt if you vote based on what you have seen and then later see a movie that you wish you would have voted for.  If anything, it'll give you an amusing anecdote to share in the Awards thread.

Also, if you don't vote, I will take you out back and shoot you in the face.

I'm officially passing. It's bad enough having to wait for video to see so many movies, but I'm not going to resort to watching them online to just get in on a deadline that isn't that important. I don't want my opinion on prospective great movies to be formulated in viewings on my small laptop.

District 9 probably will go down as the best film of 2009 for me.

If you pass then District 9 suffers!  What else are you waiting to see that you couldn't see in the theatre?

when would be a date that would satisfy everyone?

i normally don't even vote cos barely anything gets released here in time. the risk we're trying to avoid is ppl getting extra time but then still just voting for what the academy or all the other award shows have hyped up. if The Who? Locker gets any nominations this year, delay or no delay, it will be purely because of academy hype because that film barely made a peep around here even from ppl who saw it.

Not that you're wrong about the hype affecting the outcome, but The Hurt Locker didn't have a huge release in the U.S. or that much buzz when it was playing in cinemas, as far as I'm aware.  It's getting released on DVD/Blu-Ray this week, so people will only be beginning to see this in the coming weeks.

I did see the film in the Spring and it's something that would legitimately deserve a nomination, hype or no hype, even though I had problems with it and wouldn't nominate it myself--it's not a ridiculous choice for a nomination is all I'm saying.

When has the selections for the Academy Awards matched up much to ours? People's personalities on the board will make sure that we don't copy and I understand that no start date for our awards is perfect, but this is just way too soon.

so again i ask:

WHEN would be a better date that would satisfy everyone? the answer is probably next year.

so in that case i ask that everyone below suggest WHEN would be a better date that would satisfy MOST of you:

LET THE NOMINATIONS FOR A DATE TO SUBMIT NOMINATIONS BEGIN!

I vote mid February for nominations for results to come out early March, but that's me.
Title: Re: The 2010 Xixax Awards: NOMINATE!
Post by: Stefen on January 12, 2010, 12:00:18 AM
Late Feb/Early March would probably be ideal.

I get why we should have them early. Not to have the academies shitty taste leave an impression on us, but with 10 best pic nods, I think it would be inevitable regardless of when the deadline is.

I'll vote either way. I've seen enough to feel confident in my lists, but there's still some stuff I want to see and the more participants the better.

Everyone can always pm me and I'll tell you if something was good or not.

i vote to stick with the current date...assuming that district 9 is better than port of call new orleans.

and my mind has already been tainted by xixax to assume that 35 shots of rum is the best movie of the year.

and i really don't like watching movies on my computer.

Um, I'm glad people are eager to see films and vote, but I'm pretty sure every year I've done this, I haven't seen a large percentage of the films that get released/nominated for awards. I've only gotten better about staying on top of these films as they're released, but I still missed some this year. But my point is, go ahead and make it end of January, because if you haven't seen The Lady Foot Locker or P:BO"P",ANBS, you'll just have to see how they fare in these very important Xixax awards. Make it your own personal 2010 resolution to try harder and see films as they're released for next year's awards.

Even with what I haven't seen, I've got a great top ten and plenty to nominate and think about, so let's quit crying (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEOBa93fqzw) and start the For Your Consideration campaigns.

I would like late February/early March.  The XIXAX Awards are fun because we get to see how much love certain movies get from the board members.  Like any awards thing, it's not about an objective ranking of quality.  The most important thing is that people get to see the movies that they think they might want to nominate.  If they're influenced by hype, that's their business, and it's fair and interesting to see how that is reflected in the final votes.

Personally, I saw a lot this year and have a good idea of what I would vote for in most categories, so I would be ready to vote, but I'd rather wait to have everyone see at least a couple more films, especially the stuff that didn't play near them in cinemas.  Otherwise, the wider released films may win by default.

lol please don't make us cry... if anything these three things should make you see more movies:

1) college= free time
2) surgery recovery = free time
3) looking for a job = not having a job = free time
optional 4) living in new york = access to everything

january is fine by me

Also: in the past 2 months alone you reviewed White Ribbon, District 9, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Broken Embraces, Antichrist and Visioneers and liked(?) all of them.

All I'm saying is: it's okay if you didn't get to see every single movie on anyone's list.  Everybody, please calm down, think about the movies you did see that you liked.  Use the next couple weeks to go to the theatre if there is something you are dying to see, or rent the films that have recently been released and VOTE PLEASE because it will be better for everyone if you do.  Think about the children.  Thank you.

lol@pasrap crack

I hear you mod but I live in México and unless it's a blockbuster we have a shitty ass release date for everything else, all I listed hasn't been released here, only il divo is avalable and we'll make sure to see it, although sometimes if I really want to see a film I rather wait til is on the theater, cuz seeing a great movie in the theater is the best.

I vote for this:

indeed.
almost nothing has arrived to mexico yet and it won't come here until february march.
my list of awards worthy movies i've seen includes only up, public enemies, , the hangover, inglorious basterds, district 9 and the cove. avatar is no saint of my devotion. the problem is not nominating best director or picture, which could easily be one of those, but then you try to fill up the other categories and it's fucking desertland.

I mean no white ribbon, up in the air, hurt locker, mr. fox, julie and julia, an education, serious man...nothing but the popcorn fare.
mid february is ok, a bunch of those films will have been released here and on video.

i drive an hour an a half away from where i live to see the ones i really wanna see (The Road, Fantastic Fox, A Serious Man etc) but some (Antichrist, Bad Lieutenant) don't come near oklahoma and if they do its at one theater in tulsa and its not for very long. I'm ready to make a list for what i've seen though. I'm easy.

I totally agree with Up and In The Loop, and support its fight.

This premeired in 2008, but had a wider (yet still very limited) distribution in 2009.  If it qualifies, I would like to suggest:

Well, it's probably better than that DTV with Lindsay Lohan but I don't think that's the point of the award, is it?

Worst Film is whatever you make of it.  2012 was by far the most fun I had at the theater all year, but I'll still enthusiastically pull the lever on voting it for worst film of the year.  But I would much rather see nominations that spark debate and we can have fun arguing over than ones that we all automatically agree on.

Some selections, like Inglourious Basterds, are argument fodder but couldn't possibly qualify for worst film.  The category, based on its usage here, should be Most Controversial Film or Most Dichotomising or such, but Worst Film nominations for Inglourious just makes the voters The Crankiest or Most Voluble.

I could say the same thing about you and kal nominating Brothers Bloom for worst film, though.  I really liked it, you guys definitely didn't.  Clearly the people who hated Inglourious Basterds REALLY HATED Inglourious Basterds.  It's choosing movies that provoke that sort of passionate reaction that makes a worst film category interesting.

Worst film is subjective. I think our tastes are pretty in tune with what's actually bad and we can move onto films that are supposed to be good but really aren't ala Juno and Crash.
Title: Re: The 2010 Xixax Awards: NOMINATE!

Inglorious Basterds is worthy of "worst film". It's meaningless to point out that the latest Lindsay Lohan movie is worst because yes, it is, but so what? This isn't the Razzies so we aren't specializing in scumming the bottom of the barrel that Hollywood has to offer. Besides, when it gets that bad, there is no logical differentiation between what is worst than the next movie. There all bad in endless amounts of ways, but the point is that they are purposely bad too. All they are is filler entertainment for a section of the population so annoiting them with "worst" this or that is meaningless because they have zero interest in awards. All their interest is monetary.

Even though awards are meaningless in many ways, you have to keep the critical objective to films that want to be something more. You have to take films in consideration that have the air of wanting an award consideration. Inglorious Basterds fails in every possible way. The apologists may think I should call it the "misfire" of the year instead of worst, but only so many movies can seriously be taken into critical consideration. Hollywood slosh isn't part of it. Of films worthy of critical consideration, I'll definitely shine my light on Inglorious Basterds for "worst".

I don't want to make too much of this, I just find it interesting...

If that's how you're conceptualizing worst (i.e.: not in fact worst, just overrated), then it's a weird category, or at least a weird name for a category. Presumably when voting for Best Picture you're voting for what you think is best (not just underrated), so why the sudden change in conception of the meaning of these terms for the Worst category?

Of course every evaluation is subjective (even seemingly automatic ones concerning entire genres/types of films like, say, the new Lindsay Lohan). But it seems that when coming to the Worst category the idea isn't even to vote for what you personally, subjectively, believe to be worst. It's odd, that's all. If what you're talking about is the issue of what's overrated, then maybe that's what the category should be called; then you won't have to "shine [your] light on Inglorious Basterds for worst" when you don't actually believe it to be anything of the kind!

I guess the basic assumption this train of thought relies on is something like this:

Quote from: Gold Trumpet on January 19, 2010, 12:49:23 AM

Which I personally think smacks of snobbish, received-knowledge rather than discerning critical judgment, but that's perhaps a different matter.

but children, wouldn't it be even more preposterous to vote for a film I haven't seen as worst film because it looks so terrible?

Of all films I have seen in 2009, IB may or may not be the worst. But of all films I've seen that were made in 2009, it is. That is not even a matter of overrated or disapointment to me. The film annoyed me, bored me and I kept hearing people raving about it which annoyed me even more. So it is the worst film of 2009.

Yes, it would: the very last thing I'm arguing for is people making value judgments based on assumptions that certain kinds of film will always be bad. That's the kind of thinking that leads to the state of affairs I'm pointing out.

Quote from: Pas Rap on January 19, 2010, 07:16:51 AMOf all films I have seen in 2009, IB may or may not be the worst. But of all films I've seen that were made in 2009, it is.

Okay, well see - that's a very different matter, and not something that had been argued before. If you didn't actually see any films that you consider to be worse last year then of course you should vote for Basterds. I may disagree with you entirely, but that's neither here nor there. Until now, the way people had been arguing suggested that they almost certainly HAD seen worse films than the one they intended to nominate for Worst, but weren't voting for them because they interpreted the category as meaning essentially something like 'overrated'. But if in your opinion Basterds truly is the worst film you saw, then obviously: by all means...!

I'm thinking of it not by actual worst film of the year but just the worst film that I actually saw last year.  That makes Lindsey Lohans latest ineligible but makes room for something like The Brothers Bloom.

Don't worry, I think the same of your responce. There is nothing productive in attacking movies that have no self interest but to please a certain section of the audience that could care less about any award honor meant to discredit the film. All it does is separate interest because the reviewer handing out the shame and the person enjoying it aren't looking for the same thing. I always got smacked of arrogance when I would go to family members and friends and say so and so film was the worst when they liked it and couldn't care less about the standards that go into my idea of best and worst. In fact, it was grounds for more resentment toward the critical community. I've come to accept part of their plea because I think intention and ambition should matter for something. The people who love Inglourious Basterds want to see it as the best.

To reassert, everyone remember Joaquin Phoenix and James Gray for Two Lovers.

Also, I like how a "Top Film of the Decade" is at the end of list of things to vote on. I say next year we do one for top films of the 90s and continue in descending order through the decades with every year. Will be a nice thing to compliment the yearly awards. We could even add a second award like "Top Director of the Decade" as a cherry to the awards. Wouldn't hurt. If people complain about counting more votes, these adds on could kill a few of minor awards in the yearly show that few people even vote on.

Director of the decade is actually more interesting because we would be judging a body of work. I was thinking about that when trying to come up with a top 25 of the decade and how it would be easier to do it on filmmakers alone. we should do it next time. next decade i mean. ha.

Didn't make the 2010 awards deadline. Had a busy weekend.

We should do a separate decade process and do it by July or so. That could be epic since we're all revisiting and catching up on our tastes.

I missed it, too. Felt bad about it but today was one of my busier days for schoolwork and errands so I realized there is a level of importance to things in life.

Yeah, we'll still accept late ballots, within reason, of course. And Walrus, I did get your ballot. You're on my good list.

Sorry I didn't participate in your game. Nothing really interested me in 2009. I read a few top ten list and realized I never even saw 10 movies last year. Not even 10 including viewing at home. Netflix.com hasn't been visited in months, the dvds I have from them have been in my cabinet for about 8 months. I spent my Friday night watching The Wedding Singer on tv with COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTIONS. After that, I turned to HBO family and watched Jurassic Park. as I quoted the line "DINO DNA" I laughed to myself. Saturday night was spent watching Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead. What an enjoyable evening. I even put it on pause when I decided to get into pajamas.

I blamed my best buddy/pal for my lack of movie viewing. He tried to make it up to me by arranging an evening with Fellini's 8 1/2, some fine wine, and gourmet cheeses. maybe I'm past the point of no return. I'm sitting here wondering if Pretty Woman is on some channel or maybe I'm missing Mac and Me on movieplex.

Don't feel overwhelmed. Just do one thing at a time. And don't steal petty cash.

Friday...The Wedding Singer...Jurassic Park...Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead...8 1/2...Pretty Woman...Mac and Me

I don't think we need to bother with a new Dekapenticon.  This list looks pretty solid.

I'm only joking about Pretty Woman.
