Not a big Mel Gibson crowd, eh?

I was really looking forward to it because a) I like cop-Mel and b) there's clearly not enough of these types of movies. This year was a pretty good year for crime/cop/journalism-thrillers (I don't know that genre's name, but this year I mean stuff like State of Play and at the limit Law Abiding Citizen, you know, a big long investigation and then BAM! a punch. Seems like a 90s type of movie really). This genre is probably my favorite. It's always the same thing, but it never fails to entertain (especially your dad).

If your dad liked Law Abiding Citizen as much as mine did, he's gonna like this one too probably. Mel Gibson is always a step ahead of everyone like Gerald Butler. You never really understand how he figured x and y out. But it's cop-Mel Gibson so obviously he's got more street-smarts than you.

I wish this had a Shane Black-infusion at some point though.

Have you ever noticed how Shane Black has not written that many good movies, but you know that if he worked a bit on a lot of projects they would be so much better from it? Have you also ever noticed that apparently all Shane Black knows about is how cops talk around christmas time? Damn Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a good movie though.

So I was saying, this is definitely not for the people who liked the original BBC series, it's very different and less gritty. Also, it's in Boston, which makes it much more interesting than L.A. or New York. Boston is a great town for crime films, maybe it's because irish gangsters are more entertaining than black streetgangs dudes?

The poster's pretty sweet too.

yeah I like this new wave of noir-ish thrillers too.  most of them seem to have originated from britain though - this was a BBC miniseries, as was State of Play (which was a really good miniseries), Ghostwriter, which I'd just seen, was also set in Boston AND London.  And also the Red Riding trilogy.  And that korean movie The Chaser that opened in some American cities (though that movie gets way more gritty than an American one.)  I like this return to "proper" screenwriting - it's good to see that people still haven't forgotten how to set up something suspenseful and deliver a satisfying revelation.
i'm only guessing here, I haven't seen this yet, though I do have the original BBC series on my desk that I really wanna see.

This is every bit as rivieting as it looks... Probably ten fold more... The characters and story fully realized and Mel is completely encased in this particular character. He gives off this utter emotion of ulimate determinaion and ongoing pain that I haven't seen from an actor in a long time. Check it out. Just talking about it makes me want to watch it again.

Silias, did you like this or State of Play more? It's not that these movies are similar per se but I got a really 90s vibe from both of them.

I'm watching this again tonight with Monument Ave. (aka Snitch) and some Red Dead Redemption. The GF is working... glorious loner night :)

This film started ok, well, more than ok, it was a really good start but the moment Mel turned into yet another super daddy looking for his lost daughter like neeson in Taken I found myself less and less interested in what was going on. Winstone was good but the screenplay was so boringly silly with his mysterious persona, ditto danny huston's character.

I don't know, I could see exactly where this was going miles away and felt very bored. Visually it was way too bland and whatever and the conditions of the theatre sucked big time so I said "fuck this" and left. It was a while ago.
