PUSAN -- "Thirst" helmer Park Chan-wook will remake French helmer Costa-Gavras' 2005 pic "Le Couperet" (The Ax).
Costa-Gavras confirmed the news at the Pusan Film Festival in South Korea, which runs until Friday.
"I was glad to hear that Park, who has made political genre films, wants to remake my film. I met him and we talked a lot here in Pusan. I didn't want to give any opinions of mine but I will support him as much as I can in France," said Costa-Gavras.
Park was approached by Gaul's Studio Canal when he attended Cannes this year with "Thirst."
"Le Couperet" is a dark comedy thriller about a middle-class worker who turns into a killer after being unemployed for more than three years.
Pusan is showing the extended edition of Park's "Thirst" and Costa-Gavras' Berlin fest closer "Eden Is West."
Honestly this man deserves much praise.
JSA, The Vengance Trilogy, Thirst ... sure he makes 'big' movies, but with restraint and with a certain amount of fun, vigor, artfulness and gravity that can only be found outside of the United States.
He uses much of the same cast but it's not like watching Wes Anderson. His flicks may be genre, but provide that much-needed character that most genre films think they are allowed to lack.
Please watch his films and give attention to him. As a Xixax-er for somewhere around 7 years, I highly recommend you give Park Chan-Wook, aka Chan-Wook Park, a good fighting chance.
he's had some individual scenes that will go down in history as the greatest, but most of his movies don't add up the same way. I haven't seen thirst though so that might be a good movie.
Park's latest film is shot on the iPhone. it seems pretty unremarkable except that he's getting distribution. Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdDXiYuolMA) and LA times article (http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2011/01/video-iphone-movie-to-hit-s-korea-theatres.html).
I like the claustrophobic feeling you get from that tiny little iPhone sensor, but that is going to be impossible to watch blown up to theater size.
