The Visitor (really good until the last 3rd or so)

I wish I could put Lake of Fire here, because I couldn't see it until '08, but I know it was released last year. Anyway, it would tie with Wall•E for me.

Quote from: Hedwig on June 30, 2008, 05:44:55 PM
worst: Happening, Love Guru.
You went to see
that? If so, the only good excuse to see it is if you went with a hot girl you're falling for.
THE DARK KNIGHT
American Teen / WALL·E / Cloverfield / Pineapple Express
Making a list is probably a moot point since it'll mostly just be me reorganizing the films already brought up here by everyone else. My only real option is to point out the movie that has yet to have been recognized:
The Last Mistress
So far...
- WALL-E
- The Dark Knight
- Iron Man
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- Step Brothers

This year kinda sucks.
Your picks kinda make me feel the opposite. I don't think I've seen year so dominated by suh mainstream studio fare - let alone summr blockbusters.
I don't think The Dark Knight, Iron Man, or even Wall E really compete with some of the more exceptional entries of previous years (Zodiac, TWBB, No Country) but I do think they tower in comparison to what studios had to offer at this time last year.
The biggest slump, I hope, is behind us. The first three months of this year were dreadful.
And, while I can't wait for stuff like Curious Case, or Burn After Reading... I don't want to put all my hope in forthcomng eforts by established directors. It's so boring to simply be waiting for the next films by filmmakers I already love. I'm lookng forward to being knocked out by shit I don't even see coming.
But still, speaking of the Brothers Coen an Fincher - any year in which they immediately follow up some of the best work of their career with a newfil - good, bad, or infuriating, is a pretty fucking good year.
rachel getting married
flight of the red balloon
momma's man/my winnipeg
don't touch the axe (the duchess of langeais)
wendy and lucy

the dark knight
chris and don: a love story

I just watched Viva by Anna Biller tonight.
It was a really good blend of satire and overt commentary on the polarization of women's lib (either a sex slave housewife, or a slave to sexual conquest) wrapped into a wonderfully executed pastiche of 1970's midcore porn.
Has anyone else seen Last Mistress yet? I feel bad about having a penis and enjoying these movies.
Finally got around to watching 'Under The Same Moon' last weekend. Definitely one of my favs of the year.
I'm voting for The Wrestler and L'Instinct de Mort
Ah, thank you TIFF for finally making me on of those ubber cool individuals that get to see all the hit films before they make their way to the public.
You're a real dickhead, you know that? :yabbse-angry:
the ones i've seen this year and liked,
wall e
dark knight
the walker
savage grace
in bruges
night watching (duh)
i've yet to see redbelt and S.O.P., and i'm praying for W. to be one of the best movies of the year
I liked Dark Knight, Redbelt, Snow Angels. That's pretty much it. Alot of stuff I've enjoyed like Incredible Hulk, Wall-E, Baby Mama, etc. But nothing really stuck like those three.
This could end up being a really great year when it's all said and done. Almost 1999'ish. Lots of potentially good stuff is still coming out.
snow angels and in bruges are on my list.
This year has sucked. I'll say Dark Knight and Pineapple Express, with a nod to W. I have yet to see In Bruges, Synecdoche, Wrestler, but that's about it. I expected this to happen, after last year being fucking amazing.
are indie movies dead?
there are more movies now that are made between 2-8 million dollars, but I haven't seen those $400,000 ones that used to kick everyone's ass like the station agent or george washington. all the movies made at that budget don't get distribution anymore and are all about the same thing. am I generalizing? somebody save my soul!
that being said, I like this year so far.
