Wall•E
4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days (I don't know if this is '07 or '08, but it played in theaters here in '08)
Jellyfish
Reprise
The Flight of the Red Balloon
Paranoid Park
Iron Man
The Visitor (really good until the last 3rd or so)
Surfwise
Stop-Loss

I wish I could put Lake of Fire here, because I couldn't see it until '08, but I know it was released last year.  Anyway, it would tie with Wall•E for me.

A few notable movies that didn't entirely win me over but might be worth checking out:
My Blueberry Nights
Snow Angels
Love Songs
The Fall
Be Kind Rewind (was that this year?)
Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs

You went to see that? If so, the only good excuse to see it is if you went with a hot girl you're falling for.

Making a list is probably a moot point since it'll mostly just be me reorganizing the films already brought up here by everyone else.  My only real option is to point out the movie that has yet to have been recognized:

The Last Mistress

This year kinda sucks.

Your picks kinda make me feel the opposite. I don't think I've seen  year so dominated by suh mainstream studio fare - let alone summr blockbusters.

I don't think The Dark Knight, Iron Man, or even Wall E really compete with some of the more exceptional entries of previous years (Zodiac, TWBB, No Country) but I do think they tower in comparison to what studios had to offer at this time last year.

The biggest slump, I hope, is behind us. The first three months of this year were dreadful.

And, while I can't wait for stuff like Curious Case, or Burn After Reading... I don't want to put all my hope in forthcomng eforts by established directors. It's so boring to simply be waiting for the next films by filmmakers I already love. I'm lookng forward to being knocked out by shit I don't even see coming.

But still, speaking of the Brothers Coen an Fincher - any year in which they immediately follow up some of the best work of their career with a newfil - good, bad, or infuriating, is a pretty fucking good year.

I just watched Viva by Anna Biller tonight.

It was a really good blend of satire and overt commentary on the polarization of women's lib (either a sex slave housewife, or a slave to sexual conquest) wrapped into a wonderfully executed pastiche of 1970's midcore porn.

Has anyone else seen Last Mistress yet?  I feel bad about having a penis and enjoying these movies.

I liked Dark Knight, Redbelt, Snow Angels. That's pretty much it. Alot of stuff I've enjoyed like Incredible Hulk, Wall-E, Baby Mama, etc. But nothing really stuck like those three.

This could end up being a really great year when it's all said and done. Almost 1999'ish. Lots of potentially good stuff is still coming out.

This year has sucked. I'll say Dark Knight and Pineapple Express, with a nod to W. I have yet to see In Bruges, Synecdoche, Wrestler, but that's about it. I expected this to happen, after last year being fucking amazing.

are indie movies dead?
there are more movies now that are made between 2-8 million dollars, but I haven't seen those $400,000 ones that used to kick everyone's ass like the station agent or george washington.  all the movies made at that budget don't get distribution anymore and are all about the same thing.  am I generalizing?  somebody save my soul!

that being said, I like this year so far.
