Jon Cryer, William H. Macy, Leslie Mann and James Spader star in Warner Bros.' family comedy adventure "Shorts," directed by Robert Rodriguez from his own screenplay.

Rodriguez ("Spy Kids" trilogy) is also producing the film with Elizabeth Avellan under their Troublemaker Studios banner. Dan Lin, Hunt Lowry and Stacy Cohen exec produce the film, which is starting production in Austin, Texas.

Warner Bros., which is producing in association with Abu Dhabi Media Co. and Media Rights Capital, announced the cast Thursday. Jimmy Bennett, Kat Dennings, Trevor Gagnon, Leo Howard, Devon Gearhart, Rebel Rodriguez, Jake Short and Jolie Vanier also star.

"Shorts" is set in a suburb where all the houses look the same and everyone works for Black Box, manufacturer of the ultimate communication and do-it-all gadget. Chaos follows when an 11-year-old boy is hit in the head with a rainbow-colored rock that grants wishes to anyone who holds it.

Rodriguez is serving as his own director of photography, editor and visual effects supervisor.

Cryer, who's on hiatus from "Two and a Half Men," recently joined the cast of the Polish brothers comedy "Stay Cool" with Winona Ryder, Sean Austin and Chevy Chase.
